What were the political views of Friedrcih Nietzsche? I know one of his most famous admirers was H. L. Mencken, who was very much a libertarian, but I’m sure Nietzsche had many admirers. H. L. Mencken probably didn’t get his political views from one source, anyway.
But I’ve also seen him quoted as having said, “Everything the state saith is a lie; everything it hath a theft.” This quote, though, is obviously hyperbole and may not tell us much. Do you have any idea if it’s even an authentic quote?
Nietzsche was more of an individiual philosopher than anything else, but in a way, his musings tended to be about the individual’s role in society. So I guess in that sense he could be described as being political. I think Nietzsche’s tradition fits in well with an-cap, but he never explicity expressed support for anarchism or anything of that sort. There are a couple passages in Zarathustra that do take a negative view of the State though. I believe he thinks of it as a sort of negative replacement for religion (another misallocation of personal interest once “God is dead”).
