Since the mood on this board tends to be, on average, somewhat depressed (which is understandable, given the developments of our time), I thought I’d encourage you to post positive news - pro-liberty news - from all around to world to create a counterweight for all the negative input we’re being exposed to every day.
I’ll begin: in Germany, the government plans to install an internet firewall to “stop child pornography” and it’s already been announced that it may also be used for different purposes in the future. However, they didn’t expect so much negative feedback: a petition created on the website of parliament has received over 70000 signatures in just a few days, the mainstream media is reporting on it, politicians are angry and due to the rules of game, the law now has to be reconsidered.
It may not be a huge success, but it shows that a good number of people still value their freedom. And I appreciate that.
The Swedish Government created laws requiring ISPs to have their fiber go through government facilities, and to give out logs of IPs to the record companies. However, the people are outraged and two major ISPs have already announced that they will not follow the laws. There’s a good chance that the Pirate Party (Who are a fairly libertarian party with leftist rhetioric) will be a part of the Riksdag in Sweden with over 4% of the vote.
Our local city workers are on strike for over 4 weeks now. So there is no refuse disposal service.
We have been told by the city to triple bag our garbage and to store it indoors (it is getting quite warm here now). We have been told not to keep our garbage on the roadside waiting for pickup.
Many people have left their garbage on the roadside. They refuse to bring it in.
I have heard murmurs of withholding property taxes as the city is unable to provide any of the services it claims taxes for.
In socialist Canada, this is significant and positive, although I wish I had more good news to offer.
Makes me glad I live in an incorporated county where each resident has to procure their own trash pickup, and as a result numerous competing waste disposal companies serve the public need.
I love using this as an example in response to folks who try to claim there are certain services that government “must” provide.
Do you think the Pirates have a chance of getting into the European parliament this year? I’m still not sure whether I should vote at all, but if I do, it’ll be Pirate.
Just saw that they were going to be libertarian when it comes to privacy and the webz and vote with the majority on everything else, so I would say that it is an evil vote :P. Would be so much better if they wouldn’t vote at all on other topics. But the members of the party are mostly leftist, so what did I expect?
