What are everyone’s thoughts on whether you should be able to ‘own’ your organs after your death as opposed to having them put into a [basically] first-come-first-served basis if you’re an official organ donor? My personal opinion is that, like everyone else you own, you’re able to put your organs into a will, and that person is allowed to sell them for profit. Does everyone agree with this for the most part, or is there a conflict I’m missing? It’s something I just thought about, so I was wondering if everyone else has an opinion on the matter.
A will should do it. Absent one, the body would seem to become unowned, and whoever gets those organs first owns them. In practice, that’d be the family.
In other words, the organs of the dead, or mostly dead dude (who can not speak for himself), would be treated like other property and be at the disposal of the estate and who controls that. So the will or living will would be in effect for a organs and other body parts like any other property.
