Private and public central banks

I’m trying to find a complete list of all the central banks and, in particular, I’d like to know which of the central banks are private (like the Fed) and which are public (like the Reserve Bank of New Zealand)…

Anyone know where I could find such a beast?

List of central banks
A list of links to Wikipedia articles about each central bank.

But, ya’ gotta look at each on to figure public/private. Sorry.

Hm, thanks. I guess that’s a good start… at least it’s a list of all the central banks. It’s not always clear whether a bank is publicly or privately owned though - whether that bank has shareholders that receive profits and dividends or whether the one and only shareholder is the government that established the bank’s authority/monopoly on the creation of money in the first place.

In the case of the European Union, for example, it’s indicated that it’s “independent”… which could just mean that the governments of the various member states of the EU can’t tell the bank to raise or lower interest rates for reasons of national interest and that the ECB’s should act mainly to contain inflation. However that doesn’t exclude the possibilty that the ECB is none the less owed by various European (or even non-European) banks who, as shareholders, receive dividends on the profits that they make from lending money they pull out of thin air.
