Very funny… to post a proper reply you could argue that modern day mercenaries are, how to put this, very bad bang for the buck when compared to their predecessors.
How can you compare them with, say, the Swiss of old, which every king tried to enlist until the Perennial peace gave the French king first choice? How about Maurice of Nassau’s German mercenaries which helped kick the Spaniards out of the United Provinces? Or to get even further back how about the final victory of the Roman empire, Chalons, achieved by Aetius over the Attila with an army entirely composed of mercenaries, Theodoric’s heavy squadrons being the decisive force?
Sorry for the rant but Blackwater and the like look to me nothing more than what the Turks called Bashi-Bazouk: an ill amred rabble good for terrorizing helpless peasants and little more.
