The Austrian Sophie’s Choice. Below will be descriptions of two societies, simply choose which one you would prefer to live in and why. Or simply explain which idea in general you think is more important, and yes I do very well know that they go hand in hand, generally, but at the same time, they are not exactly one and the same either.
A: minarchist government with very good (relatively speaking) believes on private property. The government ‘owns’ very little property, and its only function is as the acting court monopoly, with a few court enforcers and a jail. Everything else is private and not regulated by the government. People use the government for enforcement of contracts (although they could also chose arbitration in this area), and criminal court cases, in which the judges take a relatively restitutive approach in their decisions. Taxes are paid on a flat yearly fee basis as well as usage charges for using the court. Failure to pay simply results in a lack of protection, not a seizure of property. And the only law that the government would proactively enforce would be to ensure that it still had the monopoly on ultimate decision making authority.
B: a completely stateless society in which the common view of property rights could only be described as moderately good. The people of the society do not understand/believe in ownership of waterways. While not being quite as bad as the ‘use’ idea that you see in Mutualism, but they have shorter time spans in terms of what constitutes abandonment, and much of the land in the society is ‘owned in common’
I think I might have stacked the deck too much for the minarchist side (even though I am not one), but even so, I think I would still rather choose the stateless society.
