I went to church today, and I had the most bizarre conversation with a friend.
He implied that if the government gave control of the “Hydro Quebec”(The nationalized electricity company here in Quebec) to the free market prices for electricity will skyrocket.
I told him that because of competition they would be forced to lower the prices.
He said, the prices would not lower effectively because of the cost of production. Which doesn’t really make any sense, why should the cost of production not be the same as now I asked.
Well apparently, according to him, the government is not out for making “profit”, so the government is loosing money with electricity, that’s why they higher taxes. The government is loosing money(sacrificing profit) just for us, so that we the people can pay “low” electricity.
The discussion usually goes along the same line: “profit is evil”, “why should people that own capital make more money then the workers”," at some point in your life your money makes money for you, and that’s evil and immoral because you are not working" blablabla
As always, I attempt to present some valid arguments, like the fact that I worked hard for my money, now I can proceed to invest it to people who need it, and I make money from it. But no, Jesus says giving loans is evil, that’s what Jews do. Then conversation becomes anti-Semitic and other people barge in with phrases like “Jews rule the world”.LMAO. I told him about Hong Kong and free trade, they say that’s a jungle and people are starving and dying there.
And even on some communist and socialist leaning websites, especially “libertarian socialists”. They offer some invalid arguments that “demonstrate” they’re view. They attempt to offer “proof”, by playing with words, at some point the author realizes he contradicts himself(assuming he’s not insane) and then proceeds to with the obvious “immoral, evil” gameplay.
I’ve been carefully listening to some people who think that “individualism is best when we all work for society, because society produces in higher quantity, compared to one individual who produces less. So we work for society and we depend on it to redistribute. Now you might think that’s not individualism but it is” WTF LOL,
My question is, Why do they continue to believe this non sense, what on earth motivates them? How do you explain anything to them they just won’t listen?
And if you do deal with them, how do you not become crazy?
