Lets say you were in a hypothetical situation where you could choose wealth or freedom. You can either live in a mansion with many material things you want provided to you, but you would have to stay within the confines of it, or you can run away, being poor, but free. Which would you choose, and why?
If by freedom you simply mean freedom of movement, I would take the wealth.
Freedom, however, is so much more than coming and going. Freedom can mean freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom to hold exclusive ownership over the fruit of my labor, freedom to defend my freedom, etc.
Sadly the caricature of French liberty would today be considered the high fashion: slim, shredded clothes and eating green organic food.
