I was reading Sheldon Richman’s excellent book Tethered Citizens about the Welfare state. In reading one of the notes and sources, I came across where he lists how the Swedish state sterilized up to 60,000 citizens from 1935 to 1975 including when the Social Democrats where in power. Truly a sad forgetten part of the modern welfare state’s history.
The Welfare State USA has done similar and the Warfare State USA part has done much worse.
That was done pretty much everwhere. Tommy Douglas, the NDP politician that first agitated for the present health care system in Canada, was an M.D. that wrote a paper advocating a state eugenics system. He succeeded and this was implemented in Saskatchewan for a while, later repealed. In that case it was reportedly voluntary, but incentives were created to insure people did it.
