This should be fun, because you’ll be able to buy a $300 tie in an atmosphere of complete solicitiousness, seeing as you’ll be the only customer they’ve had all week. You can pull it out and admire it under the desperate, hopeful eyes of the wait staff (all college graduates) in the restaurant next door with your $30 glass of wine and $70 plate of appetizers. For just that one small moment, you’ll be able to forget about the fact that the developer for your high-rise condo just went bankrupt and you and 30 other homeowners have to figure out how to fund a $2M operating budget for a large, multi-story building.
Honestly, now I understand what motivates some people to throw rocks and listen to Chomsky.
It’s already called Buckhead and filled with rich people. They just find it ugly.
I remember reading something once about the porn king of Soho in London slowly buying up all the properties in the neighborhood, then evicting all the adult businesses to make it a respectable neighborhood in later decades. Not a bad business model.
The developer made a bet on people having tons of disposable income that was just not realistic. All the cash-rich idiots are tapped out and there are not enough people with real money left to keep these businesses going. Of that latter group, probably half have tailors who come to them and go to private clubs rather than restaurants. High-end retailers are liquidating all over the city.
Of course, there’s always the hip-hop industry but they’ll need to change their marketing …
Dead on. You’re encouraged to work within the existing framework, take over politically approved institutions (parties, corporations, unions, newspapers etc), but don’t you ever rock the boat.
And should you fail to climb the ladder, there’s always the loving and caring welfare state to look after you. Duh.
