I’d leave too. He shows up fresh off RP’s book, checking out sources, and gets attacked for his morality. There are people here with low impulse control who show little of the necessary restraint, or sophistication of skills in discourse, to win people over by appealing to man’s innate sense of morality.
The way we argue among each other, can’t just be transferred onto someone who has no idea what we’re talking about, let alone someone who has not done one iota of the research and introspection we have.
I’ve said it before, and I will say it again. The biggest boost to libertarianism would be to round up 1000 of the loudest mouthed ideologues and send them to a Dale Carnegie seminar.
I would doubt it. I do not think most people are willing to question their reality. Government is a religion for most people. Have you ever tried to convert someone to a different religion? I did. I was a missionary for the church I used to be a member of. I had probably some of the best “sales” training one could get. It was a full two months of training, all day long every day. Afterward, I was a full time missionary for eight months. Only a couple of people “converted”, and those were references.
You may be interested in trying to get everyone, I am only interested in finding those that are actually willing to question their reality.
I’m not interested in getting anyone. I am interested in spreading ideas about liberty. You don’t do that by making people feel uncomfortable or pushing them to flee.
You might not have had success at being a missionary because you weren’t a good missionary. Religion isn’t a tough product to sell.
It sounded to me like you were interested in getting people to listen and agree with the ideas of liberty. I don’t see how anything said in this thread would not fall under the umbrella of “spreading ideas about liberty”.
It’s not important to me if they agree. I play more to the gallery of hundreds and thousands than to the handful of gladiators. Many people lose sight of that.
I sell for a living. I haven’t sold religion, but I could. I’m not trying to sell libertarianism. If someone is like Mickanomics, and is ok with violence as a means to an end, you can’t reason with them. I am not going to engage in emotional appeals or emotional blackmail.
I am sorry LS, but I am really confused. I thought you were implying if we just knew how to influence others better, that this guy would not have been scared off so easily.
I would say, the book “Winning friends, and Influencing Others” is all about sales. In fact, my cousin had to read it for a sales class.
