My little girl of 5 years old was in a play last night about Antarctica, penguins and the cold there. The play was a little cute, but I don’t know why they are focusing on Antarctica, perhaps trying to teach global warming or something.

I came home all mad about what I saw there. On the walls of the gymnasioum where the play was, they had some values listed that they were focusing on in big letters among them was Community, Citizenship, Respect and such. Nothing about freedom or liberty. Not sure why they are teaching them about citizenship at such a young age for anyway. Listed under citizenship was, “accept the responsibilty”. Odd thing for kids to understand.

After the play we gathered in her class where we picked them up. I had a chance to wander around the class to see what they were teaching her. On the teachers desk there was a quote from Aristotle, “the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.”. I was not happy. Not at all. It seems some empire has taken my little girl to indoctrinate her about the empire she lives in. The teacher, if honest should have put the whole quote there, “All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.”.

My little girl is being indoctrinated to live under a global empire that governs all of mankind! How sad! I am not sure what to do, to help her. I know how absurd it sounds, but that is the distinct impression I got.

Just above the door was a permenent plaque that say in big letters, “Community of Family”. They are not her family, my wife and her sister are her family. How dare they assume that role.!

Anyway, sorry. I just had to vent my frustrations somewhere. My wife will not home school them because she thinks she cannot teach. Sad.

Yeah, today is parent teacher conference. I wanted to go and give that teacher a piece of my mind. Luckily for her, “I had actual work to do” and could not go, and did not want to be late to work.

That should not be an obstacle. Read David Friedman’s thoughts on unschooling. The trick is to “throw books at your kids and see which ones stick”. If you can help out with questions, all the better. If not, just direct your offspring to further literature.

Personally, I think the concept of teachers being the source of knowledge is a distorted school version of how learning is supposed to work. You’re supposed to function as a “conductor” between your child and the vast knowledge of the world; children are quite able to then discover valuable knowledge all by themselves. That is, until they enter school. From that time on, the curiosity magically stops.

I would urge you to take your children out of public learning facilities if you feel they are being taught inappropriate content. Where I come from, homeschooling is completely banned under threat of force. Children here have no option but to be instructed in the values of “citizenship”. One more who keeps their head screwed on straight - yours, potentially - does make a difference.

The 18th Century Prussian education model is dead anyway. Its just nobody noticed yet.
