Many at this site are perhaps aware that Alcolics Anonymous (“AA”) is one of the most libertarian organizations in existance today. The group affiliates itself with no other organizations or politics or sects or institutions. It accepts no outside donations or funding or “stimulus” – it is totally self-supporting by donations from its members. A number of references to Bill W., if not complete essays, have appeared at Mises Institute over the years referring to AA’s absolute independence from all other entities. Of course many government agencies and organizations have made attempts to co-opt AA by making it appear there is some connection or affiliation; and since AA has no organizational structure or official spokesmen those encroachments are often misinterpreted.
Some are aware AA was started by two guys: Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith. Bill W. spent extensive time working with Dr. Bob in helping him get and stay sober. Bill stayed in Bob’s home for a number of days or weeks. One morning Bill escorted Dr. Bob to the hospital in which Bob was to perform surgery on somebody’s butt (Dr. Bob was a proctologist). On the way to the hospital Bill bought and had Bob drink a bottle of beer to calm his nerves and shaking hands so he could accomplish the operation. Bob was at the verge of losing his “practice” from the consequences of heavy drinking.
That episode occurred June 10, 1935. Dr. Bob never drank again.
