The greatest country on earth?

I do believe that the United States is the greatest country on earth still because its the last bastion of freedom in this world. Do you or do you not agree with this?

Are you sure about this?

What?

The greatest country on Earth is on top of the Earth.

Off topic,

I’m sure you are aware that Hoppe is a living economist who happens to be a fellow at the Mises Institute. I just think your Avatar is rather inappropriate.

What freedom? There is no freedom here. Although I must admit. There is probably more discontent with big government here in the US then any other place in the industrial world. Of course most of this discontent is misguided, but still, it may be the only thing that saves America from collapsing into a socialist type dictatorship of the German pattern. I don’t see any hope for the Europeans.

I agree; while the US might not be free, they seem to be less non-free than most other countries. Also, more people over there seem to be disgruntled with the state of affairs or even have ideas on how to fix shit.

Accordingly, while the OP’s phrasing of the US “being the last bastion of freedom” is exaggerating the supposed “freedom” over there to the extreme, he’s sort of got the right idea. At least that’s how I see it, as a resident of the EU, and I really hope this isn’t just a case of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence.

The biggest big government project is the warfare state and nobody is disgruntled about that.

What? I happen to be a big fan of his.

That was my point. The US has the largest number of libertarians. All other countries seem to be filled with socialist fascists. I believe that the fundamental idea behind the founding of the US (that of unregulated free market capitalism) is the main thing holding our somewhat free capitalist society from becoming a socialist barbaric hell hole.

The US might not be the most free country in the world, but it is probably in the top three.

Well it is incoherent to propose that the US is the last bastion of freedom and yet current events show it is perhaps the worst imperial power in human history.

I myself stick to HK, and .

The US has such a powerfull libertarian movement becaouse the transition to Empire has been much faster than in other countries. As for last bastion of freedom, my own communist government used such colorful terms in its own times “The last fortress of true Marxism in the World, Mofos!”…thanks guys, you remeinded me of the good ol’ days.

That article made my day Stranger. You’re the man!

Outside of the US I’d probably have to pick Switzerland or New Zealand. Doesn’t seem like there are any “freer” places, or at least places where most people believe in liberty.

Switzerland forces its male citizens to serve in the military: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Switzerland

True. That’s a really shitty thing to do. But there’s a very active group that is asking for a referendum to abolish the army altogether. Perhaps they will get to vote the army out of existence this decade.

“I’ll shed a tear drinking watered-down beer in the Late Great USA”.

That’s all there is to say.

I love this thread! Had to say it too.

I absolutely agree.

How many times have you been outside America?

Not a chance.
