Since I moved to NYC a couple of months ago the Brooklynites and Mannhatinites never seem to stop amusing/annoying me. Most people I’ve talked to that live in the city say it has been too gentrified and lost all of its charm. Honestly, they say it’s too clean and they miss the junkies and hookers that used to be common place at time squar, they miss the filth, decay, and unsafe neighborhoods. Fine whatever. The problem is though they also want to end poverty. They talk about living wages, rent controls, or what ever other hack hip idea of the month to end poverty. They also want to save the environment and increase diversity (racial divrsity of course). So they want a dirty, gritty, and multi cultral NYC BUT they are (usually) white, want zero poverty, and a clean earth. Maybe I’m just too unsophisticated to get it.
Is there ever a more clear example of cognative dissonance?

I think the most fake people have an obsession with “keeping it real”. And as far as living in Detroit, I lived there for about a year, if you know what you are doing and where you are going it really is a cool place. If not, heaven help you. I had noticed in many of the bad neighborhoods there was on almost every block a cash advance, a liquor store, and a church. So you get some loan you probably can’t afford, spend it on booze, then pray to God for forgivness, rinse, wash repeat.
You should go to the anarchist festival held annually at Judson Memorial Church to hear them tell you religion must be abolished. And don’t forget to stop by some of the primitivist booths while your there; nothing’s better than hearing NYC residents tell you that becoming all natural nudist nomadic tribesmen (er… tribespeople/persons) is humanity’s only hope.
I actually enjoyed the time I lived in NYC very much. But yes there are a lot of loony lefties. Once I went to a party and no joke there was a portrait of good 'ol Unclue Joe [Stalin] hanging on the wall.
We’re not going to liberate NYC in our lifetimes. In fact it’s probably going to be one of the last outposts of the state. So quit your worryin’.
It is to my understanding California and San Fran in particular, are 10X worse. So bad in fact, New Yorkers call them loopy
I had the same thought a while ago, about how some of these trust fund fueled white kids move into Brooklyn to “keep it real”. Same thoughts you had mentioned. Living amongst poverty is “cool”. I went to a party in a flop house where all these kids who had more than a mill in the bank, all lived together. Like 8 kids all crammed into this place, when each of them could have an apt. in Manhattan. I’m not saying these kids are jerks , most are very nice to me, but just very odd. To each their own I suppose, I’m not into trends I guess. I know a few moving into Harlem for the “culture”.

North Jersey. Once I sell my car and set up the work transfer, I’ll be working and going to school in Manhattan full time. Probably settle in Brooklyn, although rent has dropped big time so between my girlfriend and I, Manhattan looks very affordable. I’m currently floating around Tribeca/WTC 3-4 days a week.
The new Urban frontier is Detroit, have fun there, you could get rich or dead. New York City may be in for a bad spell as it loses it’s dominant position in finance both in the world and even the Americas. For example: http://investinontario.com/soundbanking/. Ontario is now the number one North American car producer, and may in the future be the number one financial center or atleast NY city’s equal (TD bank is a winner). You will note that when Pres Bush wanted to go on a speaking tour with a favorable audience, he went to Canada.
NYC would have been much better off if they let AIG and C crash, and invest the money in strong regional banks like Hudson City.
On a serious note I am starting to see more stories of assaults and muggings in NYC.
^well, I think it’s safe to say the world would be better off if AIG would be let go. However, I do not think NYC will lose its spot in finance. Although NYC is welfare spending queen that taxes the tailored slacks of these men, they are very in deep score cuts whenever they can, by paying these taxes they get privileges. Like say never going out of business? Its corruption keeps it where it is. I walk by many strong foreign banks everyday.
Now with a dollar collapse, what will come of Ontario being tops, I do not know. Singapore and Hong Kong have a great grab on that already and will most likely progress forward. I myself, a future Master of the Universe[6], am contemplating moving to Singapore.
Alaskans really love the fact that people like this get to have a say in how their natural resources can be used.

I doubt Ontario will become a world leader, but North American leader is very possible (Unless Vancouver grabs the crown). If the US$ collapses that will push up costs for US businesses, not collapse them as some believe.

I don’t think I’ll be able to meet up, but I’m over here in a mile-square village that no one cares about by mineola that is attempting to use its crappy roads to make the case for privatizing roads. Or at least I hope that’s the plan. I, as a Long Islan boy born and raised, figured I’d give you guys a shout out despite my likely inability to meet up.
