There is no “prudence” in concealing your beliefs.
Concealing your beliefs is dishonest, not to mention impotent and cowardly. If you conceal your beliefs, then those who share your beliefs and express them publicly appear to be a lunatic fringe. It allows the other side to claim to have an overwhelming consensus on their side. It allows them to grow audacious and brazen in their activities, when the opposition is in hiding.
By all means, defy expectations. Do not wait for others to support you, but lead by example. And if other choose to subject you to “derision,” that is their fault, not your. DO NOT FALL PREY TO PEER PRESSURE. BREAK THE MOLD.
