Understanding "Notes" in Rothbard's "What has the Gummint..."

Hi All,

Engineer here educating self about Austrian Econ. In Rothbard’s “What has Government Done to Our Money?”, page 38, (as downloaded from mises.org), he refers to “notes”, as in “monopoly of note issue”. What are these “notes”? The Central Bank can issue them, but I don’t understand fundamentally what they are, what they mean, how they are used?

Please excuse misspellings, as I am a notriously bad typist - ten thumbs, so to speak…

Thanks so much for any assistance!

have fun!

I assume that it might mean fiat paper money.
