Understanding the economy of a city

Hi,

I often find myself musing about why a particular city is the way it is, from an economic point of view.

Take for example, Minneapolis. I ask myself, what drives the economic engine of this city. Why the people living in the city live there? What creates GDP of this city?

I get more confused when I see some cities without any major industry, but only government offices, schools and collages. Govt. offices and schools can’t be the growth engine of a city.

With that background, what are the aspects I should consider to fully understand why a city is the way it is?

Surely the quick answer is: people realise the benefits of the division of labour, and hence try to get as close to each other to help facilitate it.
