That was even before the bolsheviks.
Of course, European countries were vast colonial empires themselves but this fact was conveniently left out

I have to say though, Russia really dropped the ball when it supported the Union in the American Civil War; sowing the seeds for American Empire and Russian national suicide in 1918, perhaps?
As an aside, I recall reading about a Tsar in the 1800s who was uncharacteristically ‘libertarian’ in his outlook, but was killed by an assassin’s grenade or somesuch…
That must be Alexander II. He abolished serfdom, improved the lives of oppressed minorities such as Jews and supported gold standard and pro-market reforms (or at least, his ministers did). Unfortunately, there were a lot of revolutionaries already in Russia and they really didn’t like the tsar that actually made people live better - not good for the movement, you see. So they tried to assassinate him several times and finally succeded right before he was supposed to sign the new Constitution that might have prevented the Russian Revolution.
This is sort of vintage (like old t-shirts are vintage)… but somehow more ridiculous. And somewhat ass-backwards. Apparently the capitalists eschew technology that communists use readily. And the communists are so competitive they use drugs to win! Why Stalin was right – they will out-industrialize the West!
Attitude towards Russia is always a constant, it was the same when the Russia was the fortress of reaction in the 19th century, the same when it was (at least nominally) the most radical state in the world under the Communists and is the same now that it is run by your run of the mill corporatists. You can consult diplomatic history of the 19th century and feel right at home among all the paralels. It is enough to make one wonder if the mistrust and hostility rather than being based on any real geopolitical concerns is not actually based on some prejudice held at a much baser level.
