What praxeological precept(s) confirm anarchism over minarchism in providing for societal economic health AND societal security from external threats?

no doubt, any private fringe rebellion can kill innocents and damage infrastructure, but they rarely are a force for societal change, and when change occurs it results in a statist government. Moreover, you cant wage an effective guerilla campaign without an extreme measure of coordination and central governance. the most successful insurgencies are the ones that are centrally led, trained, funded, and planned – not ad hoc decentralized campaigns from disparate forces trying to achieve the same goals.

Tell that to the insurgents in Iraq, who were better than the coordinated and central government forces. Besides, PDA’s wouldn’t be ad-hoc, they would just be decentralized and disparate. And that doesn’t mean they can’t coordinate their efforts in order to minimize costs and redundancy of efforts.

however, I will acknowledge than when expertly arranged and nurtured, mutual defense alliances can deter war and provide for more security. History and logic confirm both benefits and liabilities of seeking out alliances.

Cool

I disagree.

the purpose of a private enterprise is to make a profit, period. If a net profit can be gained by annexing a neighboring ancap enclave for its natural, material, human, or geographic value – then the PDA will engage in armed conflict. moreover, the purpose of a private insurance company is to make a profit. If they can fund profitable enterprises, they will – irrespective of whether these enterprises are peaceful or violent.

Come on guy. Keep a thread of conversation in your head. Remember the past, and what I’m responding to. You stated this:

Rettoper - “I thought that the purpose of these private defense agencies was to engage in actions that reduce the frequency of conflict. I wouldnt be motivated to insure a PDA that was hell bent on creating buffer zones in competitor PDAs markets thereby inviting conflict.”

Clearly, I was responding not to the purpose the PDA has for the PDA, but what purpose the customer has for the PDA. Because that is what you were describing when you stated “I thought that the purpose of these private defense agencies was to engage in actions that reduce the frequency of conflict.” I mean unless you meant that that is the way that profit is generated by the PDA, which clearly goes against you stating that war can be profitable for a PDA, as it would increase frequency of conflict.

in sum, if all war was unprofitable, then why have so many occurred?

If armed conflict was unprofitable, then why have so many PRIVATE enterprises and individuals engaged in armed conflict ?

I specifically pointed out this strawman to you before. Can we remember what I said? Oh wait, it’s written down somewhere, let me go see.

Sam - “The argument isn’t that all wars represent a net loss to the aggressor, nor that PDA’s will not attack if they determine that they will net gain from an aggressive war. The argument is that aggressive wars in anarchic societies with PDA’s will not be profitable.”

So remember, we aren’t arguing that war is not profitable for the aggressor in all cases. Just in the case of a PDA existing in anarchist society in full swing.

you are making the oft used, never supported fallacy that once ancap society is formed, the utility of armed conflict in gaining a net increase in wealth, security, fame, power, et al will disappear.

Other than the fact that I supported it, multiple times, and you have yet to respond to them or have agreed with them. Here, let me quote a few of them for you.

C) Insurance companies will refuse to pay for losses taken from an aggressive war

G) They will lose customers that they already have who don’t like aggressive wars.

F) The risk of becoming outlaws by being involved in an aggressive war will dissuade most of your lower staff, causing your costs for lower staff to sky rocket.

E) Stock holders will hardly see the immediate benefits of an attack, and will quickly pile out of the company in the short term, cutting off further funding. There’s also the potential for stockholders to become outlaws, so that adds to the cost of being a stock holder, further driving down it’s value.

And the Pièce de résistance

ANYBODY who works for said firm would instantly become an outlaw. The price you have to pay someone to become an outlaw is astronomical. Let’s just take the 100 billion dollars. If you have 100,000 people working for you, that’s 10,000 dollars each, and that’s without ever paying your stock holders. You’re telling me that 100,000 trained professionals (roughly what it would take to invade and hold Iran, and that’s being generous) are going to become outlaws for 10,000 dollars? 100,000 dollars (1 trillion dollar price tag)? 1 million dollars (10 trillion dollar price tag)? Mercs right now make 150K-250K a year without being an outlaw (I don’t know if that price will hold). You’re going to pay them 4-7 years of pay to make them an outlaw? And that’s if you can get 10 trillion dollars to invade Iran. The upfront costs for becoming an outlaw firm is prohibitively expensive, and that’s before you even see any dividends for stock holders. It’s absurd to think that a PDA with existing customers, big enough to invade Iran would even consider the offer.

So yeah. Each of these refutes the idea that a firm will be able to both become an outlaw by starting aggressive wars, and profit from it.

It appears you semi-responded to this last one, but not really. You didn’t get to the main gist of my argument as I’ll show later when I respond to that argument.

moreover, since ancap society is more efficient than statism, we may see more conflict since the net costs/conflict will decrease. in a statist world, the costs of waging war are high due to inefficiency thereby reducing the net gain of a possible war. in contrast, the costs of waging war in an ancap society are smaller due to increased efficiency thereby increasing the opportunity for gains in heretofore unprofitable conflicts.

Well you didn’t back off so here we go. You miss the other piece of the puzzle. If anarchism makes the costs of conflict go down, what does it also do to the cost of defense? It makes the price of that go down as well, thus allowing people to have access to more of it, thus making the cost of attacking go back up to what ever level it came down from. In fact, because anarchist customers will be more motivated to defend than attack, there will be more R&D into defense than offense, and the costs of defense falling will drastically out strip the rate of falling costs for offense. Why will anarchists be more inclined to defense than offense? Because there are relatively fewer offensive applications that won’t lead you to becoming an outlaw, as opposed to defense.

again, private companies are in the business of making money, if the PDA can gain a profit from armed conflict, then they will do so. and they will find venture capital, investors, banks, et al to fund the war for a percentage of the plunder.

Agreed. If the PDA can gain a profit from aggressive armed conflict, it will do so. But it will not be able to gain a profit from aggressive armed conflict, thus, they won’t do so.

in turn, these profitable PDAs can increase the quality of service to customers through capital improvements, R&D, marketing, et al. In contrast, overly timid PDAs and the companies that insure them will not have the resources to compete successfully against more aggressive and profitable PDAs

This won’t happen because aggressive PDA’s won’t be profitable.

we did not invade iraq “to be paid”. it was a preventative war motivated to protect global oil markets, prevent non-state faith based terror groups from obtaining WMD, punish and deter human rights violations and genocide, promote representative government in the middle east, and counter violent islamic extremism.

in sum, the war in iraq was the culimination of years of bad policy that was dumped in george bush’s lap. Within this environment, the following options were available to the US:

Irrelevant since you already admitted good Mutual Defense Agreements will lead to less war, and thus a more profitable PDA.

in sum, a PDA could easily find funding to annex 70% of the world’s most accessible oil reserves.

in addition, would a profitable large PDA reject $100 billion from the saudi king to destroy iran’s nuclear capability in a series of low cost low risk air strikes ?

Not if those actions made all it’s employees/stockholders outlaws.

investors dont give a rats ass who a rogue PDA aligns with as long as its actions turn in a profit, period.

what is all this talk about outlaw ?!

if an outlaw or outlaw behavior turns a profit then the outlaw will be considered a hero to those that funded him.

By asking that question, you’ve shown you haven’t even done cursory research into anarchist law. Listen to this essay by Robert P. Murphy, since it’s much to long to get into right now. It essentially means that anarchist courts will no longer have you in their courts since clearly you’ve violated their laws and will no longer abide by their decisions in regard to this. Until you abide by their decisions against the aggressive wars, you will never be able to use any of those courts, which makes you fair game to anybody who wants to steal from, enslave, or kill you. That is a really REALLY large cost to you, and so the PDA firm who want’s you to do something which will make you an outlaw, has to pay you MORE than not being an outlaw is worth, which would be significantly higher than 4-7 times your annual salary, since it has to support you being an outlaw for the rest of your life, and since you can make that much without being an outlaw in 4-7 years time.

verizon and any other private enterprise doesnt give a rats ass about cooperation. they dont cooperate with competitors to be good citizens. they only cooperates when they can profit from the action and increase market share over their competitors. I guarantee that verizon or any PDA would never expend resources or cooperate with a competitor if it wasnt profitable irrespective of the damage to the rest of the industry of society in general.

when have corporations rejected profit for the good of competitors or the community in general? and why should they? if they arent in business solely to make money they fail.

end of story.

You state the obvious, and then expect me to think that is a refutation of what I said. It isn’t. I’m ARGUING that it IS profitable to cooperate with competitors in defense from a mutual threat since taking it out now, when you have an ally, will be easier than taking it out later when you don’t. But again, you already agreed to that.

i dont know exactly what you are getting at here. My point was that if you have disparate competing PDAs, with disparate funding sources, and numerous free riders responsible for protecting vital centers of gravity it is infinitely more difficult than a single statist military, a single statist command and control, and a single funding source (no free riders)

What I was getting at was a point towards this thread of the conversation. Which was about PDA’s not statists. A PDA won’t be able to invade and take over because they don’t yet have the passing on of costs to unwilling customers yet. Those unwilling customers will resist, thus making it harder to extract resources from them. That is all. It was another point as to why a PDA won’t become a state through invasion/forced monopolization.

it doesnt matter what kind of war is fought. if it is profitable, it will be fought irrespective of whether it is just, unjust, preventative, defensive, et al.

Yes it does, because it has everything to do with whether or not that firms employees become outlaws or not.

anarchism doesnt eliminate immoral behavior, it simply makes it more profitable to engage in immoral wars since those funding and waging the war receive 100% of the plunder.

Says the man who’s always saying “Give me the quote where I said it’s Impossible for liberal democracies to go to war”. So, what am I about to say hmmmmmmmm. Did I say anarchism eliminates immoral behavior? By the way, Anarachy also makes those funding the war pay all of the costs of war, thus offsetting the plunder.

in contrast, you will have peace within a geopolitic of liberal democracies because those funding war (taxpayers) dont receive the plunder of profits from war, hence the wars for profit are far and few between and the leadership that engages in them are summarily voted out in the next election.

Unless they trick/obfuscate the voters into thinking it’s not a war for profit.

how would you or anyother ancap adherent know what the market would do ?!

i am constantly amused when ancap adherents claim they know how the market would perform under certain circumstances. If ancaps are so cocksure about predicting market mechanisms they why are so many of them dependent on government funded student loans ?

in sum, you dont have a clue how market forces would react to competing PDAs and their interests.

So how exactly is it that I’m predicting what the market would do. All I said is that if a PDA could convince an insurance company that they would have to pay out less money if the PDA under took a preemptive war, that the insurance company would allow it. How is that at all predicting whether or not the insurance company would be convinced?

Also, that’s rich coming from the man who stated the following

the bottom line is that a PDA or a cartel of PDAs will emerge as a hegemon

and…

enclaves are essential to a profitable PDA. Why, it is far easier to have most of your customers in the same location, it is far easier to defend them from threats then to have them spread out all over the friggin countryside thousands of miles apart. so naturally PDAs will represent specific enclaves for economic reasons. however, I agree that funding isnt dependent on geography, but quality service IS!

So how is it that you accuse me of pretending to know what a market would do, and then you state this? And protecting one enclave isn’t mutually or economically exclusive with protecting another. And one PDA protecting an enclave also isn’t mutually or economically exclusive with another PDA protecting the same/overlapping territory. All those situations can be equitable.

also, if I am a PDA I dont need to convince anyone but venture capitalists, investors, and customers that a particular action is profitable. If a competing PDA is a threat to my security then nuking them is a reasonable course of action to protect my investment from loss.

If I’m a statist or liberal democracy, I DON’T HAVE TO CONVINCE ANYBODY. And if you do it in an anarchist society, you are instantly enemy #1 on everybody’s radar. Also, you have to convince your liability insurance company to back you in even owning a nuclear weapon, which again, is explained in the anarchist law link I provided earlier. It essentially goes, that for anybody to do deals with you, they need some guarantee of follow through on contracts, and some guarantee of restitution if you violate their rights. Thus you need proof of having a liability insurer, who is on the hook for all rights that you violate. They in turn, get to regulate you as part of that contract, up to and including, limits on the amount of possible damage you can do, thus never ever ever letting you even touch a Nuclear weapon with a 10 foot pole (since there is no real application that a nuclear weapon can be used without causing massive damage that that liability insurance agency would be on the hook for). Again, for more, please listen to that essay.

manifestly absurd,

if that was the case we wouldnt have invaded iraq in 1991. we would have continued to engage in a lucrative oil trade with them and kept the global price of oil low.

You can’t be serious. Really. They invaded Kosovo. We had a Mutual Defense Agreement. And please, please argue with the principle of charity. It’s not like I said trade stops all wars. I said generally as in, some things could over come that disincentive when it comes to states (like insane dictators). Your doing the exact same thing that you harped on everybody else for doing. So get your head out of your ass.

Also, I know what your going to do. You’re going to jump all over the insane dictators thing and jump around screaming “Insane CEO’s, Insane Board Members”. And then I’m going to have to remind you that profit seeking firms will not allow such people to become their leaders, since those types of people will lose them money for all the reasons posted before this.

liberal democracies dont wage war because we share a common bond of respect for life and liberty, AND those that wage war (military), those that command war (civilian leadership), and those that fund war (taxpayers) represent disparate and competing interests that tends to reduce the chances of war being fought for other than security reasons. moreover, unlike ancap PDAs, these entities are all transparent. in contrast, PDAs in an ancap society would develop weapon systems, train, fund, and execute provocative actions in the shadows thereby increasing distrust and global tensions.

moreover, liberal democracies understand that they dont represent a threat to each others security, only statist regimes need fear liberal democracies.

But really, if you want a list of reasons why that’s bullshit, Here you go. That at the very least, stands to the same standard of proof that your Iraq 1991 example of free trade not stopping war.

absurd assertion. preventative war and a war to annex resources of any kind can be the same. a PDA can attack and take a strategic target to prevent a threatening competitor PDA from obtaining vital war making resources or a geographically critical position.

history is full of peaceful, non-aligned, and prosperous nation-states and anarchic enclaves being overrun by large armies seeking to deny the strategic value of the enclave to another competitor.

I didn’t assert anything. I told you the argument you made, and the argument you quoted had absolutely no relation to each other. If a preventative war and an annex resource war are indeed the same, then that firm and it’s employees won’t become outlaws, not because it’s an annex war, but because it’s a preventative war.

diseconomy of scale doesnt mean that a walmart like PDA cant out compete smaller PDAs. It simply means that when a PDA reaches near monopoly status it may not be as efficient as when it was slightly smaller. it doesnt imply that it will lose power relative to smaller competitors.

What do you think inefficiency does? It loses you market share, and thus power relative to your competitors. That is just mind boggling to read.

the bottom line is that a PDA or a cartel of PDAs will emerge as a hegemon and then your “utopian experiment” is shit out of luck and subject to the whim of a single CEO or corporate board, hence you have absolutism or oligarchism.

No see, you are pulling this straight out of your ass. You have zero evidence or even logical arguments as to why PDA economies of scale will overcome the dis-economies of scale and calculation problems, and allow a firm to grow to such a massive size that it could over come all of the previous objections stated to become an outlaw firm that will be able to take over an entire anarchic society. Becoming an outlaw firm is a MASSIVE cost due to having to pay every one of your employees enough to become an outlaw. Lasting monopolies have never existed without state interference, and while that certainly isn’t a convincing argument to me and the other people here, it is certainly an argument that has convinced you before. Sure a dominant firm may arise, but the very second it tries to forcibly expel its competition, it loses all of its employees and stockholders who don’t want to be outlaws, and the firm collapses since it’s costs have just risen astronomically with all of its funds leaving. If it’s a cartel of PDA’s, why wouldn’t one or two of them refrain, and gain all of the rests market share, employees, and stockholders cash at a ridiculously low cost since a whole bunch of them just quit their jobs/sold their stock, and all without becoming outlaws. Cartel’s fail when ever its not in their members interests to be faithful to it.

since 1776 we have seen unparalled improvements in civil and political rights within liberal democracy, especially if you have been a slave, woman, or didnt own property. moreover, the system has demonstrated that it is dynamic. Today in Europe we are seeing dramatic reductions in the size and scope of government as the people see that the welfare-warfare state in untenable.

the same will occur within the USA starting in 2010 and progress further in 2012. admittedly the process is slow, however the upside is that it is largely peaceful and substantive change can and does occur.

nonetheless, the next 20 years will be critical. if we cant reduce the size and scope of economic coercion that is damaging societal health and well being then the ancap alternative will become more popular, sadly the statist alternatives will likely gain favor to a greater degree.

however, I will be on the ancap side, if the heretofore successful although not perfect, experiment with constitutional federal republicanism fails.

You respond with unanalyzed trends to praxiological arguments. All the same though, you’ll be on our side eventually. Since 1913 our economic freedom has been deteriorating faster than our civil liberties have been growing, and we’ve been killing more an more people as we go. Excuse me if I don’t see the trend towards freedom as a whole.

PDAs consolidating and merging will lead to a hegemon PDA which in turn will lead to absolutism. so when your PDAs seek out competitors to align with in mutual defense arrangements you might increase security while the downside is that you centralize security which is more dangerous to societal security from the establishment of a single hegemon PDA with most of the munitions, trained fighters, and control of vital centers of gravity.

if you want lasting peace — democratized the globe.

See above.

thanks for the link, however I will read it later since I dont want to lose what I posted.

It linked to a Wikipedia article on welfare.

valid argument. increased trade and interaction among disparate groups leads to reduced tensions and greater cultural integration.

however, liberal democracies offer the same trade and interaction benefits among disparate groups without the uncertainty associated with surrendering security to disparate, competing, and shadow PDAs

why gut an existing and popular system that offers the same benefits that you even admit, MCDONALDS.

Because certainty exists in liberal democracies. The certainty of having your half your income forcibly taken from you. The certainty of liberal democracies turning into corporatist states, and then into fascist states. The certainty of your money losing its value. I would rather be uncertain of those things, than certain.

Mcdonalds exists in more places than just liberal democracies. Clearly something else is the cause.

moreover, no ancap has convincingly explained to me why PDAs are even necessary if market forces eliminate the need for armed conflict.

If nothing else, then states will still exist, and so armed conflict may be necessary. Everybody pays the PDA hoping they will never have to use the service, and just like medical insurance, it uses all of that money towards the customers that do need defense. War would be considered like a natural disaster, and the PDA is a protection against it.. The go where needed, and all their customers not in that disaster are helping pay for it.

they will defend their own tiny religious, ethnic, racial, communal,et al enclave – but they will be less inclined to defend an adjacent enclave that they share no common heritage, history, or political system.

free riders will also deter effective resistance to neighboring areas under attack. for example, there is no provision to ensure that everyone impacted by a threat contributes to its defense. moreover, a free rider who is not protected could be in possession of an important strategic or geographic resource or objective. essentially, a PDA would have to expend resources defending a non-paying customer in order to protect paying customers or investors.

in reality, if my PDA cant defend me, I simply move my business to the bigger aggressor PDA thereby rewarding aggression.

if you cant beat them, join them.

paradox of defense within an ancap society

in sum, I havent read much on the free rider issue. I am interested to learn how ancap society adjusts for this eventuality.

if you dont respond convincingly I will read more from hoppe, rothbard, murphy, dilorenzo, et al.

Here’s an argument against free riders I made a few years ago.

Road owners would have a much larger incentive to protect an entire area. They would probably own a network of roads in an area and would pay for the defense of those roads. Seeing as they would service the people in that area, they would add into the cost of the use of those roads the defense of those roads. Everybody would be paying, there would be no free riders. Just as there would probably be a network of road owners figuring out how to allow people to easily use their roads interchangeably (think roaming with wireless companies) they could also work together to coordinate defense, and reduce transaction costs. If any network of roads refused to add to the defense fund (or provide for it’s own), it could easily be made policy within the road owners association to cut off connections from roads owned by the defecting firms, or putting defense fund tolls on all exits from the defecting firms road network.

It’s just one solution I came up with when I first became an anarchist. Robert P. Murphy has another essay on private defense about the free riders. But rest assured that the larger businesses will ensure that there is enough money being paid in order to protect their businesses, even if there’s a few free riders. And again, the state has a much larger free rider problem e.g. welfare, social security, Medicare, Medicade, Public schools etc. I’d ask you not to continue to argue the free rider problem in this thread though, since another thread was created for that.

who says you have to take and hold anything but the centers of gravity ?

in the case of iraq, you send in a small navy and marines to take the strait of hormuz and charge exorbidant fees for iraqi ships to transit.

over 50% of the worlds most accessible oil reserves pass through this choke point.

How much do you think you could charge before it becomes cheaper to move it through another route? How long could you hold it before another firm was paid just as much to take you out, and without having to pay their employees to become outlaws? Not to mention that if you fuck up, and you don’t succeed in taking over the strait, you are still an outlaw firm, and now you don’t have that income. By the way, That’s 40% of the worlds seaborn oil shipments, and 20% of the world’s oil shipments. Care to explain the how you came about to over 50% of the world’s most accessible reserves?

it is ludicruios to think that a for profit entity would try to take and hold iraq in this manner.

moreover, it is equally ludicrious to think that the USA liberated iraq for short term profit

in sum, those arguing the efficacy of ancap society dont have a clue how ancap civilization will play out ----otherwise they would be putting their “money where their mouth is”

in reality, most of the ancaps on this site are pimply faced college kids getting subsidized with taxpayer money in the form of student loans.

probably, few have ever met a payroll or ran a business for themselves.

It’s also ludicrous to think that a firms employees will all accept becoming outlaws for chump change.

And with that, I think I’m done. This has taken way too much time. I’m gonna go program something.

Since when did minarchy become anything other than a statist system? How can an intellectually honerst person frame a debate as if minarchy is anything but a statist system?

This intellectual flaw repeats throughout the thread and it defies history. Regicide.

Again the intellectual dishonesty is apparent right from the get go. Socialized defense is not statism? Give me a break…

And it continues on… which amazes me considering most minarchists (including retopper in the first thread I responded to) are unwilling to accept society is utopian because it is an intervention against the natural system of anarchy.

And it just continues on and on. The only way for any society which is inherently utopian to sustain itself, is for the people of that society to preserve the majority of force. I think it’s hilareous retopper was unwilling to accept this fact with regards to minarchy and try to turn it around to fit anarchy when it is already acknowledged society is an intervention against nature.

Citations? Your assertion… back it up…

Human beings evolve. Doesn’t give much credibility to your argument. Human beings did not have organized religion then we did have organized religion. Human beings will evolve beyond the state

This one really cracked me up because American soldiers do exactly that. Lay down their lives to protect the bottom line. Good ol Smedly Butler and war is a racket. .I think it is hilareous Marines today worship Smedly in their traditions yet completely ignore his wisdom. What an incredible sales job on the young mind.

I sure would like to see your white paper backing up that assertion.

It does not matter whether people voluntarily pay for it or the state steals from people via taxation. Once people stop paying, it’s game over and there will be a change or violence. To claim theft and taxaton is preferable to choice is ridiculous.

It is not that you do not acknowledge the utopian nature of society. It is that you prefer theft to voluntary choice.

Yes.

You just go back and forth. It crackes me up. I can sense the mental conflict. Minarchist society is utopian… Anarchist society is utopian… hmmm… I think I prefer socialized defense via theft so that must be better.

Citation:

Between 1860 and 1895, about 80 countries were wiped off the map, through (1) the Risorgimento in Italy, which abolished 4 dukedoms and one small kingdom; (2) German unification (37 small-to-medium-sized kingdoms and principalities); and (3) colonial ventures with colorful names like “the Great Game” and the “Scramble for Africa,” which extinguished or converted into ‘protectorates’ three Central Asian khanates, about 25 African states, four Pacific island kingdoms, six Southeast Asian monarchies and numerous smaller tribal associations. By the mid-1890s Europe’s total count of independent countries had dropped to 24, Asia’s to five, and Africa’s to two. By Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee ceremony in 1897 – held just after the curtain went down on the monarchies of Hawaii, Tonga, Madagascar, Aceh, and Sulu – there were about 56 independent countries worldwide, which is probably an all-time low.

The 20th-century trend toward more countries began with Cuban independence in 1898; Australia, Panama, Norway and Albania followed in the next decade. Since then, about 130 more countries have emerged with the breakup of tsarist Russia, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman empire after World War I; then decolonization in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and the Pacific between 1945 and 1980; and the collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. The official U.S. count now lists 192 independent countries, the newest being four small Pacific island states; with 64 other territories of varying political status listed, there is still room for growth. To the extent that there are political (as opposed to economic, cultural, or technological) ‘globalizing’ trends today, they are mainly reflected in international organizations like the UN, WTO, IMF, and World Bank, or regional associations like NATO, ASEAN, and the European Union.

Your scenario does not account for the economic ineffecancies of statist society. Can you update your hypothetical to include the the economic effeciency of anarchist society. Is it even possible for a one time gain to economically dent an economic powerhouse?

Furthermore can you update your scenario to account for the additional risks of border property and how a market would contractually react to that increased risk?

More of the mental conflict. Fun to watch it go back and forth. You have already answered your own question but continue to ask it.

We already know this is how works in a statist system. If you want to create a federal reserve system you only need to hold a conference at Jeckyll Island and acquire 25% of the media.

They do? Can you cite where the United States border is defined?

Tell that to Arizona, California, and other states in the south west. You are really cracking me up dude.

I think you completely dismiss the capability of companies in anarchist systems to collect information on people throughtout the world. Since anarchist systems are very pro trade, insurance or rating companies in anarchist society are going to have some impressive databases to asses risk.

Let me know when you can cite where the United States border is defined and the constituton delegates the power to the federal home owner association to regulate immigration.

And you miss a fundamental difference in the ability of markets to asses risk.

Even the mighty BP has to cater to public opinion.

Human evolution. The days of the aristrocracy controlling human beings as citizen cattle via monopolies on money are coming to an end. Once they lose monopoly control on money the state will have to steal directly from the people whenever it wants something and that will not last long.

What is more realiastic is a tireless minority bucking the fiat monopoly money system paving the way for the rest of the 325 million to fall in line. Sound money has returned to the United States and it is not going away.

It does? I would like to see your white paper on this.

Surrounded by anarchists.

There is a revolution occurring. You can embrace it or fight it but it is not going away.

I would like to see your white paper on truth or changing peoples beliefs.

Religion

I think I tired of reading somewhere around page 5… the thread started off in a poor framework and has just continued on repeating it…

Is rettoper’s new argument “we need the government to steal our loots from us, so we loot less”?

if so then I have this to say:

What the butt?–yuberries

do traffic lights that deny us freedom to cross the intersection whenever we want, deny us overall freedom of movement ?

do voluntary private trade associations, industry standards, community organizations/associations “loot from us” since we surrender a degree of freedom to join these organizations and associations?

moreover, protection in the American PDA is voluntary. You are welcome to overthrow the existing power structure, refuse complaince with its laws, or leave the country.

in truth, constitutional federal republicanism is more coercive to statist entities than free market entities. we use a statist framework to

(1) isolate statist threats (washington, albany, lansing, mt. clemens, et al),

(2) make them transparent,

(3) establish a republican and federal republic with an electoral college to reduce the tyranny of the majority,

(4) establish regular elections to remove statist politicians,

(5) establish a republican and federal republic with an electoral college to decentralize power,

(6) establish equal and competing branches of government to distract and deter absolutists,

(7) establish a bill of rights to protect natural rights,

(8) separate the military from its funding (taxpayers) and command structure (civilian leadership)

why was all this necessary ?

because our founding fathers knew that capitalism alone was not sufficient to check the predicted drift toward statism and absolutism.

indeed, they discovered soon after our founding that our articles of conferation were not even sturdy enough to provided both protection from external threats and protections against absolutism.

anarchists are more than welcome to force their system of choice on the masses, if they can summon the will and the means to do so. however, I believe this will be welcomed by statists who will use the power vacuum to re-establish power they held since the dawn of civilization until 1776.

moreover, it is far easier to attenuate the economic abuses of our constitutional federal republic with a balanced budget amendment, elimination of income tax, elimination of the federal bureaucracy, and greater states rights among other steps.

again, using the analogy of a flu vaccine to forestall the emergence of full blown flu is how I envision our current political system. we just need a slight genetic alteration in our current vaccine – not scraping the whole processes and returning to the practice of uses leeches to combat disease.

live_free_or_die,

interesting handle considering that there are absolutely no anarchic societies today, hence you dont have long for the world.

Since when did minarchy become anything other than a statist system? How can an intellectually honerst person frame a debate as if minarchy is anything but a statist system?

it obviously has statist elements, Please provide the quote in which I claimed that minarchism was anarchic?

indeed, anarchic society would have voluntary coercive organizations and associations the same as a liberal democracy. moreover, the USA is voluntary. if you dont like it, you can leave. you can fight to remove the existing power structure, or you can refuse to follow its tenets and go to jail.

This intellectual flaw repeats throughout the thread and it defies history. Regicide.

what does regicide have to do with disproving the efficacy of minimal government devoted strictly to national defense and law enforcement and adjudication ?

Again the intellectual dishonesty is apparent right from the get go. Socialized defense is not statism? Give me a break…

how is my statement that socialism lacks the ability to make economic calculations intellectually dishonest ?

And it continues on… which amazes me considering most minarchists (including retopper in the first thread I responded to) are unwilling to accept society is utopian because it is an intervention against the natural system of anarchy.

if anarchy is a natural system then why do none exist today?

moreover, I dont believe that utopian society of any type is possible since the individual is flawed. maybe if we were angels, but we are not.

The majority of people support limited government, however only a fringe believe in the efficacy of anarchism. Moreover, economy of scale and division of labor disprove anarchism.

division of labor leads to PDAs and professional arbitration firms which are basically just private versions of statist armies and statist courts.

economy of scale would lead these entities to form cartels or monopolies in order to preserve power and market share which in turn leads to absolutism.

what is the profit in not taking absolute power once a PDA attains hegemon status?

Citations? Your assertion… back it up…

I dont need a citation. it is common knowledge that the iceland “anarchic” society collapsed when a few christian missionaries intervened. Moreover, iceland wasnt a ancap society by any objective, rational, and independent thinking measure. I provided citation to refute this in an earlier thread and others have provided sources suggesting that iceland was not ancap in this thread.

Human beings evolve. Doesn’t give much credibility to your argument. Human beings did not have organized religion then we did have organized religion. Human beings will evolve beyond the state

my argument is based on present day humans, yours is based on “future” humans that have not yet evolved to match your system of choice.

I ask you — whose argument is less credible ?

however, I hope you are correct. If nothing else, I like your optimism. However, I think that human nature, brutal that it is, has served us relatively well in coping with the competition from nature that has led to numerous extinctions including neanderthal.

This one really cracked me up because American soldiers do exactly that. Lay down their lives to protect the bottom line. Good ol Smedly Butler and war is a racket. .I think it is hilareous Marines today worship Smedly in their traditions yet completely ignore his wisdom. What an incredible sales job on the young mind.

sales job or not, liberal democracy has demonstrated the ability to gain adherents and defend itself. Indeed, liberal democracies has demonstrated that they are the most effective system at destroying absolutist regimes and systems.

in contrast, nobody is willing to die for anarchism, much less risk property or sacred honor to see it realized. Of course, yourself notwithstanding.

I sure would like to see your white paper backing up that assertion.

it is not my assertion, but I subscribe to it.

It does not matter whether people voluntarily pay for it or the state steals from people via taxation. Once people stop paying, it’s game over and there will be a change or violence. To claim theft and taxaton is preferable to choice is ridiculous.

a constitutional federal republic restricts the freedom of the statist to usurp power from the individual.

using an analogy, within anarchic society there would be contracts that prevent physical violence within a venueand requires a surcharge on entry to pay for a PDA to protect customers, however none would assert that this organized coercion to prevent violence is ridiculous

simarily, a liberal democracy establishes contractual protections via a constitution bill of rights to preserve life and liberty. Indeed, since 1776 we have seen a dramatic increase in both political and civil rights throughout the western world. however, I will acknowledge that our founding fathers failed to provide adequate protections from economic coercion of government. however, i believe this can be corrected within our constitutional federal system.

A violation of the US constitution frequently results in immediate sanctions including death depending on the degree and who attempts the violation.

in fact, I am always amused by posturing from anarchists who say the constitution is simply a worthless piece of paper, yet I can guarantee that they follow its laws explicitly and none yet have risked life, liberty, or sacred honor to dispute this “worthless piece of paper”.

indeed, many of the most vocal and grandstanding hypocrite anarchists depend on student loans and other government largesse in the form of tenured positions at statist supported universities.

not convincing these anarchists. I guess their mantra is “do as I say, not as I do”

It is not that you do not acknowledge the utopian nature of society. It is that you prefer theft to voluntary choice.

No, I prefer a “nightwatchman” to protect against the inherent evil and weakness in man (and hypocrisy regarding anarchists enjoying the fruits of liberal democracy within a statist subsidized institution) that leads to the emergence of statism.

in contrast, the anarchic society has no protections against the emergence of absolutism or defense from external statist threats.

Yes.

If our current system cannot reduce the size and scope of government. then How do the anarchists plan on removing statism ?

lets have your plan.

You just go back and forth. It crackes me up. I can sense the mental conflict. Minarchist society is utopian… Anarchist society is utopian… hmmm… I think I prefer socialized defense via theft so that must be better.

there is no mental conflict. actually rolling back government is attainable. the socialists now in power will see large losses in november and again in 2012.

I think it is evident since 1980 with the election of Reagan that the American people sense that the bigger government, the more problems beset society.

however, responsive candidates and coalitions have not yet formed to force substantive change. That will change in the next 5-10 years has our welfare state unravels and politicians are forced by circumstances toward minimal government. It is already happening in the most socialist of liberal democracies. Indeed, even sweden, UK, greece, ireland, et al were recently forced to dramatically downside their bloated governments. this is simply round one.

To the extent that there are political (as opposed to economic, cultural, or technological) ‘globalizing’ trends today, they are mainly reflected in international organizations like the UN, WTO, IMF, and World Bank, or regional associations like NATO, ASEAN, and the European Union.

of course, decentralization is positive and most of the new nations are liberal democracies.

Your scenario does not account for the economic ineffecancies of statist society. Can you update your hypothetical to include the the economic effeciency of anarchist society. Is it even possible for a one time gain to economically dent an economic powerhouse?

i believe you were referencing my scenario of a hypothetical statist “attack” on a neighboring anarchic enclave. IN this case, it is assumed that the statist regime was larger. Why?

because there are currently zero anarchic societies, hence if any do form they are unlikely to be large. Moreover, irrespective of how efficient they are they would still have less REAL power than a large statist neighbor. history is full of examples of small, prosperous, and peaceful enclaves being overrun by large, poor, despotic, and warlike statist regimes.

however, I will acknowledge that if a large anarchic society emerged “overnight” then yes they could withstand the expected statist threat. However, this assumes that the anarchic society can mobilize and consolidate an effective defense before predation.

Furthermore can you update your scenario to account for the additional risks of border property and how a market would contractually react to that increased risk?

if a statist regime or cartel has more gold, they could simply buy the anarchic society centers of gravity and defeat it from within. Note that the chinese have most of the world’s gold.

We already know this is how works in a statist system. If you want to create a federal reserve system you only need to hold a conference at Jeckyll Island and acquire 25% of the media.

then you agree that it is plausible to undermine anarchic society by using its strengths against it. namely, potential enemies could work within the free market to subvert and undermine anarchic society with impunity.

moreover, I think in our lifetime the power of the fed reserve will be severely curtailed or eliminated outright.

They do? Can you cite where the United States border is defined?

Tell that to Arizona, California, and other states in the south west. You are really cracking me up dude.

dont choke,

While the border has been relatively unsecure to allow the free passage of labor which has benefitted this country greatly – the border is becoming more secure.

moreover, this week the GOP senate leadership is purposing a bill to eliminate citizenship for illegal or legal aliens who have babies on US soil. My guess is that the 14th amendment will be amendment to reflect this change inthe next 10 years.

In sum, the USA has not had open borders because they couldnt control them. they had open borders to permit beneficial traffic in labor and trade.

I think you completely dismiss the capability of companies in anarchist systems to collect information on people throughtout the world. Since anarchist systems are very pro trade, insurance or rating companies in anarchist society are going to have some impressive databases to asses risk.

interesting that you would cite the efficacy of “impressive databases”. these will no doubt be used to coerce competitors and adversaries in an anarchic society. they could be used to undermine societal freedoms. Indeed, unrestricted blackmail would be a very profitable industry within anarchic society. moreover, to what extent would these private blackmail firms use this power to undermine societal cohesion and security ?

in contrast, within our constitutional federal republic any reckless violations of privacy for other then national security are exposed, condemned, violators ostracized, and in many cases jailed.

Let me know when you can cite where the United States border is defined and the constituton delegates the power to the federal home owner association to regulate immigration.

again, the US borders are open to allow the free exchange of products, service, and labor. If the Feds, identified a threat to national security from unsecure borders, they have the wherewithal to defend against it.

moreover, anarchic society would have far less secure borders since these societies encourage the free exchange of goods and labor without a nimble, centralized, and cohesive framework in place to react against quickly emerging threats.

the criticisms you make against the US border would be magnified within anarchic society.

And you miss a fundamental difference in the ability of markets to asses risk.

I acknowledge that a large anarchic society could provide for a private infrastructure or industry to defend against external threats. If you read my earlier responses you would have read this.

however, there would be no protections against a madman building a nuke in his basement until after the fact. What provisions would anarchic society have in place to protect itself from a anti-social fringe group hell bent on destroying society ?

a group similar to the aum shinrikyo, islamic extremists, et al could establish itself in an isolated autonomous region and plot, train, procure, plan, and execute armagedon with impunity.

in contrast, for better or worse, if a similar group in the USA saws off a 1/2" off a shotgun barrel the ATF sends in 50 armed agents into their compound, and all hell breaks loose.

Even the mighty BP has to cater to public opinion.

true, as long as no single entity gains control of a vital center of gravity (foodstuffs, water, transportation, communications, military, medicine, WMDs, et al) then society can function relatively freely. however, do you discount the possiblity of a omnipotent PDA being formed through mergers, acquistions, buyouts, et al ?

Human evolution. The days of the aristrocracy controlling human beings as citizen cattle via monopolies on money are coming to an end. Once they lose monopoly control on money the state will have to steal directly from the people whenever it wants something and that will not last long.

What is more realiastic is a tireless minority bucking the fiat monopoly money system paving the way for the rest of the 325 million to fall in line. Sound money has returned to the United States and it is not going away.

I just bought a home at 4.25% ---- while I agree that fiat money may be on the way out in the long term — it is still going strong today. I think the US government can still borrow money from abroad at ridiculously low rates.

while we have lost faith in the US dollar, the smart money in the FREE MARKET disagrees, at least in the short term.

Nonetheless, I think that the Federal reserve and a currency backed by more than paper and ink is on the horizon. however, that doesnt mean that the USA will not maintain a minimal government to oversee defense and law.

It does? I would like to see your white paper on this.

I dont need a white paper on this. obviously the USA is not fascist. we have a smooth and orderly transition of power every 2 years. moreover, we have a functioning constitution, bill of rights, and a federal system that is not respected or adhered to in fascist nations.

this is one of the reasons why anarchists will always be a fringe minority. you make outrageous assertions that 95% of mainstream Americans reject out of hand as lunacy.

Surrounded by anarchists.

There is a revolution occurring. You can embrace it or fight it but it is not going away.

I wish you luck. it would be interesting to see how well ancaps fare. However, I still have faith in our system since we have seen significant improvements in political and civil liberties since 1776 — we need to tweak the system to eliminate economic coercion from the central government.

hold off on your “revolution” until 2020 – if no substantive reductions in government occur by then, you will likely have a greater following.

moreover, clean your ranks of statists — I am guessing they will infect any ancap movements since they see change as a method to remove liberal democracy from the geopolitic. note that the statist fears liberal democracy more than anarchism., hence the enemy of my enemy is my friend. any ancap revolution will be a friend of the statist.

be wary.

Religion

I think I tired of reading somewhere around page 5… the thread started off in a poor framework and has just continued on repeating it…

wrong, actually organized religion has been more a bane of statism, monarchism, et al than any other system.

organized religion has balanced statism and absolutism that has allowed liberal democracy to emerge. if it wasnt for religion, liberal democracy might not be realized today. and without liberal democracy, anarchism cannot emerge.

moreover, secular statism or more specifically marxism/socialism has murdered more innocents than liberal democracy, religion, and anarchism combined.

your condemnation of religion is another example of the extreme fringe ideas that are prevalent in anarchic circles. and this is another example of why you wont succeed – by discounting and denigrating the inherent drive of mankind toward organized expressions of faith.

sam,

i will respond to a few points now and more later.

Tell that to the insurgents in Iraq, who were better than the coordinated and central government forces. Besides, PDA’s wouldn’t be ad-hoc, they would just be decentralized and disparate. And that doesn’t mean they can’t coordinate their efforts in order to minimize costs and redundancy of efforts.

the insurgents are fighting for statism. most of them are either islamic extremists who believe in sharia law or baathist who are arab fascists.

moreover, most of them are dead or quit fighting long ago.

the surge worked. these “private” armies were paid off and went home.

which confirms my assertion that statist cartels can simply buy anarchic enemies allegaince.

end of story.

Clearly, I was responding not to the purpose the PDA has for the PDA, but what purpose the customer has for the PDA. Because that is what you were describing when you stated “I thought that the purpose of these private defense agencies was to engage in actions that reduce the frequency of conflict.” I mean unless you meant that that is the way that profit is generated by the PDA, which clearly goes against you stating that war can be profitable for a PDA, as it would increase frequency of conflict.

professionals working within a PDA will have a specific skill set. they are killers and they are highly skilled at employing armed force to achieve ends. as a result, they will leverage this skill set to gain as much security, power, and wealth as possible. I dont see how not leveraging your specific skill set is profitable or desirable.

in contrast, a group of engineers is not going to use waste their specific skill set taking up arms and raising hell. the point is that a PDA will naturally be violent since that is what it does best. the notion that you can arm dozens, hundreds, thousands of competing and disparate PDAs and society will be peaceful is not supported by history or logic.

there is no check on violence within anarchic society since the PDA commands, funds, and enjoys the fruits of its labor – moreover, it does all of this in relative secrecy.

in contrast, within a liberal democracy the military cannot fund itself, it doesnt command itself, and it doesnt enjoy the benefits of its success.

So remember, we aren’t arguing that war is not profitable for the aggressor in all cases. Just in the case of a PDA existing in anarchist society in full swing.

again the notion that you have a group of natural born killers in the form of PDAs and they are not going to use their unique skill set to challenge for societal wealth, security, and power is unconvincing.

human nature dictates that individuals will leverage their particular skill set to gain (1) base needs-- food, water, shelter (2) security, (3) wealth, (4) power.

it is natural that PDAs will compete for power and a hegemon will emerge that will likely become absolutist since no checks are in place to prevent this.

specialization of labor == professional killers

economy of scale === consolidation of the most effective of these killers.

So yeah. Each of these refutes the idea that a firm will be able to both become an outlaw by starting aggressive wars, and profit from it.

It appears you semi-responded to this last one, but not really. You didn’t get to the main gist of my argument as I’ll show later when I respond to that argument.

who needs a stinking insurance company, we dont need no stinking insurance.

an ambitious and profit motivated PDA could easily find funding and investors to support the taking of the strait of hormuz since the capture of this center of power would be a tremendously profitable asset with little or no risk

the taking of the strait of malacca would be another choke point that would be a tremendous boon to the PDA that held it for transit fees.

the PDA that leverages its skill set by taking the most strategically and geographically vital resources will be the one that receives the most capital.

of course a few timid investors and insurance companies will invest in cautious and timid PDAs, however most people want to get rich and you cant get rich investing in ventures that arent aggressive.

Because there are relatively fewer offensive applications that won’t lead you to becoming an outlaw, as opposed to defense.

a valid argument, if offensive costs decline – it is expected that the costs of defense decline also. so there is no net benefit.

However, you did not challenge my assertion that a PDA and its investors are more likely to engage in armed conflict since they would realize 100% of the gain from successful war.

in contrast, within a liberal democracy war is far less likely since those that fund it (the taxpayers) rarely receive any direct monetary benefit, indeed the guy on main street is likely to see his taxes go up and interest rates rise.

this is one of the important reasons why liberal democracies are inherently more peaceful than statist or anarchic societies.

you want peace, democratize the world.

This won’t happen because aggressive PDA’s won’t be profitable.

manifestly wrong.

if war was unprofitable, then why so many wars throughout history ?

will mankind suddenly become enlightened and intelligent overnight after establishing anarchic society and discover that there is no profit in theft of a vulnerable neighbor ?

will a group of trained killers refrain from leveraging their unique skill set to gain wealth, security, and power by coercing engineers, artisians, doctors, lawyers, et al because they deem it to be unfair to use their skills against untrained weak citizens ?

Indeed, will a group of professional arbiters, lawyers, insurance adjusters not leverage their organizational skills to align with the most powerful PDA in order to attain hegemonic status and become absolutist ?

will a hegemonic PDA refrain from absolutism because anarchic society suddenly makes him moral or just ?

in sum, will distrust and the drive to gain power and security be satiated simply because the antagonists become private ?

and since the market rewards increased market share and reduced competition with more profit, then PDAs will seek to acquire greater market share by forming cartels and trusts through mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers until you have a hegemonic PDA that will assume absolutist power.

essentially by advocating anarchism you are advocating a return to the dawn of civilization and a return to absolutism. In that case, I hope that if that occurs we wont have to wait 6000 years for the emergence of the first liberal democracy similar to what occurred in 1776.

the failure of anarchism will be confirmed by the number of statist that flock to its aid during any revolution against liberal democracy.

Non-sequitur, and it doesn’t even make sense.

There is a difference between forced association, and involuntary association. This key fundamental factor is so important it plays a roll in economic calculation and the formation of meaningful market prices.

The rest of your post isn’t really worth raising an eye towards as your whole premise is in conflict with itself.

Non-sequitur, and it doesn’t even make sense.–filc

it is not a non-sequitur since it proves that within the free market nominal and specific restrictions on certain freedoms actually increase overall freedoms within society.

a traffic light obviously restricts the driver’s freedom to advance into the intersection, yet by doing so it would likely save his life and reduce the time to destination.

simarily, liberal democracy restricts the freedom of the military to fund and command itself and loot plunder from successful operations. this reduces the likelihood that the military within a democracy will assume absolutist power.

constitutional federal republicanism employs myriad negative rights on government while bestowing guaranteed rights on the individual. in contrast, anarchism has no such protections against the drift toward absolutism.

moreover, PDAs are autonomous organizations who can plan, procure, train, and execute in relative secrecy-- they provide their own funding, training, command, and enjoy the plunder of their “labor”

specialization of labor means that trained killers will form PDAs which will have most of the weapons of war, be trained, and be the most effective at using them

economy of scale suggested that eventually a cartel of PDAs will form that will assume absolutist power within anarchic society.

in contrast, within liberal democracy the funding of the military is by tax payers, the command is by civilian government, and the spoils of victory do not go directly to those doing the fighting.

There is a difference between forced association, and involuntary association. --filc

citizenship in a liberal democracy is voluntary. YOu can leave anytime you want, you can take up arms and remove the government, or you can refuse to follow its laws. It is obvious that most hypocrite anarchists are fine with liberal democracy since they tacitly acknowledge its superiority over anarchism by their palpable inaction. In many cases, the loudest critics of liberal democracy are the ones who benefit from its most statist policies (student loans, tenured government jobs, et al)

This key fundamental factor is so important it plays a roll in economic calculation and the formation of meaningful market prices.–filc

the department of defense (DOD) budget depends entirely on the free market. liberal democracies are not command economies, they have vibrant free markets that provided all of the goods and services that the military depends on hence the government is not acting in the dark regarding spending.

indeed, many weapon systems are cancelled or not purchased because the costs/benefit are too high.

in contrast, within a command economy like the former soviet union economic calculation is a problem since the government produces all of the munititions and sets prices for labor.

in sum, you have not provided proof that your argument applies to liberal democracies.

The rest of your post isn’t really worth raising an eye towards as your whole premise is in conflict with itself.–filc

expected since you have no substantive rebuttal.

That is a really REALLY large cost to you, and so the PDA firm who want’s you to do something which will make you an outlaw, has to pay you MORE than not being an outlaw is worth, which would be significantly higher than 4-7 times your annual salary, since it has to support you being an outlaw for the rest of your life, and since you can make that much without being an outlaw in 4-7 years time.–sam

note that this is a sure step to despotism. an all powerful court that makes the subjective self-serving determination that armed force cannot be a force for wealth creation or positive change within a society.

indeed, if the anarchist mindset rejects violence for postive change, then it rejects a natural and beneficial human right since the dawn of civilization and it rejects the right of men who are best at wielding armed force their right to leverage this unique skill set by a set of men who are held in utter contempt by the warrior class.

specifically, anarchic society is pacific yet still vile, hence it is vulnerable to predation from rogue PDAs that will laugh in the face of the hypocrite morality from kangaroo courts while less violent, subtle and more cruel parasites are allowed to coerce the innocent and vulnerable into “voluntary contracts” resulting in slavery, poverty, blackmail, infanticide, and other depravations simply because they have a signed contract that implies “voluntary” assent.

your professional arbiters, lawyers, insurance agents, and the PDAs that support them will soon be on the chopping block if you deny natural rights to men like alexander the great, ceasar, genghis khan, napoleon, et al who will undoubtedly engage in armed conflict that suits their natural skill set and those of the men they lead.

moreover, if you think these calculating and ambitious killers will announce themselves before they achieve hegemon status then you are more naive then I thought.

this is another reason why anarchism has never existed, it is despotic to certain rights, namely the utility to produce positive change through violence or redress of intolerable abuses like infanticide, volutary servitude, blackmail, intellectual property violations and other societal indiscretions that will be unchecked in anarchic society. moreover, while they reject war as a force for positive change under certain circumstances, they foolishly provide no checks on the emergence of its power.

anarchic society dangerously allows these ambitous and charismatic CEOs the ability to fund, train, plan, command, and execute violence autonomously and without a hint of transparency. moreover, these PDAs enjoy the fruits of their labor directly.

in contrast, liberal democracy recognizes that it is dangerous to allow the military the means to fund, train, command, and execute war without civilian funding, command, and oversight.

you want global peace, liberal democracy can provide it. they have never waged war on one another.

Anarchist societies have never waged war upon each other (based on your premise that anarchy has never existed)

That said, I’m not really interested in global peace as much as I am in my own individual liberty.

Are you saying that you don’t believe I am entitled to my individual liberty because the consequence of too much freedom might be war?

Or are you saying I cannot be any more free than being on the side of a winning majority in a liberal democracy?

Rettoper can you please stop using the same fallacies you have been called out on over and over? It makes it very annoying for anyone who sees it.

We know there are no anarcho-capitalists societies today. It doesn’t “prove” anything. God.

just… LOL.

Say I break into your home, put a gun to your head, and put forth a “proposal”:

  • you give me your life’s savings, and I leave you alone. I’ll keep some of that money for myself and give out the rest for random institutions and your neighbors.

  • you convince 50% or more of your neighbors to stop me, in which case you succeed, I’ll change places with another thug who might just do the same thing.

  • you move to some other place where there’s probably another thug who’d do the same.

  • you go to jail. I’ll let you out sometime; repeat.

That’s voluntary? LOL

If you concede that the state lacks the means to best allocate resources, and defense is a scarce resource, then the market can deliver it better than the state as well.

You’d become unpopular and lose customer base. Just like the state today will sometime become unpopular and have the taxpayers quit on them.

Your assertion that ‘economies of scale apply to law and defense’ are so far just as valid as ‘diseconomies of scale apply to law and defense’. You have not shown why one is more valid than the other, and to what extent. Maybe people want smaller PDAs. Maybe people will require better insurance and transparency from large PDAs for the exact reasons you give; they’d fear the PDA would become a state. Have some imagination, or rather, at least just listen to what people are saying.

I don’t get it, can you rephrase that? You’re saying charging people for coming into your property is coercion? Okay… so you have to let people in your house for free and without restraint then? What do you mean!?

The constitution is not a contract insofar that the scope of it goes beyond its signees. You can’t make a contract for someone else without explicit authorization to do so, much less in the name of a whole society, behind closed doors… that’s a ridiculous concept. I’d sign away your life savings to me if that were the case; would be just as valid.

You don’t know what each of us do, number one. Number two, stop that type of argument or I’ll quit you for sure. That’s the most annoying and condescending one you make. So annoying.

Didn’t you just concede that the ancaps can defend against statists? What the butt… less flip-flopping please?

There’s a flip-flop right there Rettoper. God damnit. You can roll back the government, but you can’t stop paying for it period? You can shrink it to whatever size you want, but you can’t get rid of it? Why not? Stop paying the thugs, then they won’t have anything to eat, and they’ll have to get jobs voluntarily like everyone else.

Try giving us a plan on how to “take over” ancap land, and we’ll tell you how you’ll be stopped. You know why I’m so sure you can’t think of something so good that someone else hasn’t thought of a counter for? Because that’s exactly how the market works Rettoper, and you can’t beat it. Even if you were to beat it for a second, someone else will come by and outgame you. Even if it takes years, even if it takes a century.

You take over the media and start lobbying for central banking. Cool, people buy it and you’ll have a ton of customers. And then you try fractional-reserve-banking everyone, changing interest rates and inflating the money supply, guess what, you’ll lose popularity and people will eventually switch banks. You can’t be the big bad evil guy for long, and certainly not as long as you could if you had a state to help you at that.

You are not comparing vis-a-vis when you make those take-over comparisons. What society would be easier to “take over”, the voluntary, or the centrally planned one? Pretty obvious if you were honest with yourself.

Lol what? Thank God we have the government to protect us from blackmail? Seriously but that’s just propaganda now. Willful thinking.

Might as well say thank the government for making the grass grow.

The state does? Especially, the state in the liberal form you advocate can foresee terrorists attacks in a way that no private investigator can?

How?

And I shouldn’t be saying this due to my conspiratorial background, but state terrorism is actually the number one type of terrorism in history. If you want to stop terrorism, you’d be best eliminating the biggest band of anti-social people out there. Just saying, you don’t have to believe it though.

With legal tender laws, you can’t not accept dollars as payment in the US… hardly a market phenomenon that we still use dollars today. And it can’t be “proven” it is until people are free to do so. Just as it is impossible to “prove” anarchism over statism just because statism exists today and anarchism doesn’t. Fallacious.

This post and the rest of it are just ridiculous. Who owns the street, and therefore the traffic lights? The traffic light is one way for the road owner to tell you how to behave in his property. If you want to come into his property and disrespect it, well, you better be ready to respond in court. You wouldn’t like if someone came into your house and started running around, even while you’re telling them to stop; why would you feel entitled to do the same to others?

And that whole “move, then” argument is just as ridiculous. You’re implying the state owns all land, which I don’t think you yourself believe to be the case. But that’s what the argument reduces itself to. Don’t say something without knowing what you’re saying, please.

the insurgents are fighting for statism. most of them are either islamic extremists who believe in sharia law or baathist who are arab fascists.

moreover, most of them are dead or quit fighting long ago.

the surge worked. these “private” armies were paid off and went home.

which confirms my assertion that statist cartels can simply buy anarchic enemies allegaince.

end of story.

You aren’t comparing apples to apples. The fact that the largest army in the world defeated insurgents in the middle of bumfuck middle east nation has 0 relevance to my point, which is IRAQI insurgents > IRAQI statist military. I’ve stated this 3 times now, an you haven’t said shit towards it. The fact that they are fighting for their own version of statism has 0 relevance to how well they’ve performed compared to their statist counterpart (read: Iraqi military).

professionals working within a PDA will have a specific skill set. they are killers and they are highly skilled at employing armed force to achieve ends. as a result, they will leverage this skill set to gain as much security, power, and wealth as possible.

Stop quoting things I say, and then arguing points with zero relevance to them, pretending that it’s a response. You’ve made this argument more than once in this post, I’ll respond to it further down.

again the notion that you have a group of natural born killers in the form of PDAs and they are not going to use their unique skill set to challenge for societal wealth, security, and power is unconvincing.

See you keep asserting this, but you haven’t responded to the arguments which stop them from doing that.

human nature dictates that individuals will leverage their particular skill set to gain (1) base needs-- food, water, shelter (2) security, (3) wealth, (4) power.

it is natural that PDAs will compete for power and a hegemon will emerge that will likely become absolutist since no checks are in place to prevent this.

See you keep asserting this, but you haven’t responded to the checks that I’ve said are in place.

specialization of labor == professional killers

economy of scale === consolidation of the most effective of these killers.

Specialization of labor == professional defenders

Economy of scale == complete bullshit that you have yet to support. You haven’t even come close to addressing the costs associated with your employee’s becoming outlaws. You haven’t come close to explaining how economies of scale have never led to a monopoly, but would in this one industry. You have to show the Ideal Firm size on an industry by industry basis, as it is not the same for all.

who needs a stinking insurance company, we dont need no stinking insurance.

Anybody who has the risk of being attacked will want insurance. If you don’t have insurance, you have to spend your own resources on reinforcements. The defenders will have extra to spend on reinforcements if they get attacked. The attackers will be without such income, and thus have that much fewer reinforcements.

an ambitious and profit motivated PDA could easily find funding and investors to support the taking of the strait of hormuz since the capture of this center of power would be a tremendously profitable asset with little or no risk

What do you mean no risk? Clearly it’s a desired passage way if you are correct in your analysis (assuming you exorbitant fees wouldn’t cause them to find other routes). Any other PDA who was paid to would be able to take you out, and they wouldn’t have the increased cost of having to pay their employees to become outlaws, since they are killing outlaws.

the taking of the strait of malacca would be another choke point that would be a tremendous boon to the PDA that held it for transit fees.

Again, the same applies.

the PDA that leverages its skill set by taking the most strategically and geographically vital resources will be the one that receives the most capital.

And again, the PDA’s who don’t do that won’t be handicapped by skyrocketing employee costs. They will quickly be able to put down any agency which does decide to become aggressive, and become the equivalent of bank robbers.

of course a few timid investors and insurance companies will invest in cautious and timid PDAs, however most people want to get rich and you cant get rich investing in ventures that arent aggressive.

It’s the only way to get rich through PDA’s. By investing in (wait for it…) Private DEFENSE Agencies.

However, you did not challenge my assertion that a PDA and its investors are more likely to engage in armed conflict since they would realize 100% of the gain from successful war.

What do you think this was?

By the way, Anarachy also makes those funding the war pay all of the costs of war, thus offsetting the plunder. - Sam

So, yeah, I did. And that’s Besides the fact that my ENTIRE argument has been how Anarchy makes a PDA and its investors less likely to wage war.

in contrast, within a liberal democracy war is far less likely since those that fund it (the taxpayers) rarely receive any direct monetary benefit, indeed the guy on main street is likely to see his taxes go up and interest rates rise.

Manifestly wrong. (said completely mockingly) They fund it through debt and inflation, which they’ve easily scapegoated on greedy businesses.

this is one of the important reasons why liberal democracies are inherently more peaceful than statist or anarchic societies.

Other than that the reasoning is fallacious.

you want peace, democratize the world.

Do you honestly think that just repeating a phrase over and over again makes it true?

manifestly wrong.

if war was unprofitable, then why so many wars throughout history ?

will mankind suddenly become enlightened and intelligent overnight after establishing anarchic society and discover that there is no profit in theft of a vulnerable neighbor ?

Do you have no concept of past arguments? Let me quote myself one more time.

Again you strawman my argument, and in the exact same way I pointed out to you before.

will a group of trained killers refrain from leveraging their unique skill set to gain wealth, security, and power by coercing engineers, artisians, doctors, lawyers, et al because they deem it to be unfair to use their skills against untrained weak citizens ?

They are leveraging their skills to gain wealth, security, and power. It’s called defending people. If they do coerce engineers, artisans, doctors, lawyers et al, others with the same skill set will be able to coerce them, but without becoming outlaws, thus lowering their costs of coercion towards that group.

Indeed, will a group of professional arbiters, lawyers, insurance adjusters not leverage their organizational skills to align with the most powerful PDA in order to attain hegemonic status and become absolutist ?

No, because their entire business is about having a reputation of being impartial. If they gain a reputation for favoring one firm, they lose all their customers, and then it has no more weight than the supposedly hegemonic PDA saying that it is correct, which is exactly what they’d be saying anyway. There is no way to co opt the the arbiters lawyers and insurance adjusters because their entire job is based on reputation.

in sum, will distrust and the drive to gain power and security be satiated simply because the antagonists become private ?

Yes. Becoming an outlaw is a large cost. It prohibits firms from having a large enough amount of employees in order to stay hegemonic and become an outlaw firm.

and since the market rewards increased market share and reduced competition with more profit, then PDAs will seek to acquire greater market share by forming cartels and trusts through mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers until you have a hegemonic PDA that will assume absolutist power.

Again, you state this as if it is true, but have not shown it to be true. You have to show a few things.

A) The ideal firm size is big enough the take over an anarchic society
B) The ideal firm size is big enough that, even if it becomes an outlaw firm, it will have enough resources to retain it’s employees and still be hegemonic
C) The ideal firm size is big enough that it will have enough resources after becoming an outlaw firm to last through an entire war with the other PDAs (who are fighting for survival) in order to establish resource extraction from the population at large, even when those PDA’s are obtaining insurance payments on destruction of their property, have lower costs due to not being outlaw firms, and while the supposedly hegemonic firm is not getting insurance payments since they are the aggressor.

essentially by advocating anarchism you are advocating a return to the dawn of civilization and a return to absolutism. In that case, I hope that if that occurs we wont have to wait 6000 years for the emergence of the first liberal democracy similar to what occurred in 1776.

No I’m not. (roughly the equivalent amount of actual reasoning in the above section)

the failure of anarchism will be confirmed by the number of statist that flock to its aid during any revolution against liberal democracy.

No it won’t. (roughly the equivalent amount of actual reasoning in the above section)

note that this is a sure step to despotism. an all powerful court that makes the subjective self-serving determination that armed force cannot be a force for wealth creation or positive change within a society.

I love how you read the word courts and immediately translate it in your mind to the word court. It would appear you haven’t read or listened to what I suggested earlier. So go do that, and then come back and make an argument against something which you have a slight clue about.

indeed, if the anarchist mindset rejects violence for postive change, then it rejects a natural and beneficial human right since the dawn of civilization and it rejects the right of men who are best at wielding armed force their right to leverage this unique skill set by a set of men who are held in utter contempt by the warrior class.

specifically, anarchic society is pacific yet still vile, hence it is vulnerable to predation from rogue PDAs that will laugh in the face of the hypocrite morality from kangaroo courts while less violent, subtle and more cruel parasites are allowed to coerce the innocent and vulnerable into “voluntary contracts” resulting in slavery, poverty, blackmail, infanticide, and other depravations simply because they have a signed contract that implies “voluntary” assent.

What the fuck do you think defense is? Shooting Rainbows and Happiness at aggressors?

your professional arbiters, lawyers, insurance agents, and the PDAs that support them will soon be on the chopping block if you deny natural rights to men like alexander the great, ceasar, genghis khan, napoleon, et al who will undoubtedly engage in armed conflict that suits their natural skill set and those of the men they lead.

You assume too much. You assume that Alexander the great will have massive support by men willing to lay down their lives for them, against helpless villagers with pitch forks. Again, you assume a hegemonic firm can become an outlaw firm, with all of it’s employees agreeing to do so without demanding a vast amount of money in return.

moreover, if you think these calculating and ambitious killers will announce themselves before they achieve hegemon status then you are more naive then I thought.

And if you think risk analysis agents of the insurance companies and security futures speculators won’t attempt to find this stuff out, you have no problem solving skills. You see the world in problems, not solutions. Change your mindset a little, and challenge your own thoughts before you write them down, instead of calling others naive.

this is another reason why anarchism has never existed, it is despotic to certain rights, namely the utility to produce positive change through violence or redress of intolerable abuses like infanticide, volutary servitude, blackmail, intellectual property violations and other societal indiscretions that will be unchecked in anarchic society. moreover, while they reject war as a force for positive change under certain circumstances, they foolishly provide no checks on the emergence of its power.

You have no clue what customary law will decide is legal or illegal. So this point is completely void of understanding anarchist law. Please, attack something you know a mustard seeds worth of information about.

anarchic society dangerously allows these ambitous and charismatic CEOs the ability to fund, train, plan, command, and execute violence autonomously and without a hint of transparency. moreover, these PDAs enjoy the fruits of their labor directly.

THEY ALSO SUFFER THE COSTS DIRECTLY.

in contrast, liberal democracy recognizes that it is dangerous to allow the military the means to fund, train, command, and execute war without civilian funding, command, and oversight.

It’s dangerous to have a military without stock holder funding, command, and oversight and also costs of action resting upon the actors, things which are not features of a liberal democratic military.

you want global peace, liberal democracy can provide it. they have never waged war on one another.

Bullshit

It is the arguments that are true that hurt the most.

I disagree. It’s arguments that are constantly refuted, and yet pop up again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again that hurt the most.

sam,

Agreed. If the PDA can gain a profit from aggressive armed conflict, it will do so. But it will not be able to gain a profit from aggressive armed conflict, thus, they won’t do so.

LoL, Am I mistaken or is there a contradiction in there ??!!

if the PDA can gain a profit from aggressive armed conflict, it will do so. But it will not be able to gain a profit from aggressive armed conflict, thus, they won’t do so.–sam

again, how can you reject thousands of years of human history and the numerous unrelenting conflict between individuals and states and assert without anysubstantive logic or empiricism that with the emergence of anarchism the motivations, efficacy, and benefits of armed conflict in providing for food, water, shelter, security, wealth and power will be rendered obsolete ?!

This won’t happen because aggressive PDA’s won’t be profitable.

prove it !

throughout history aggressive action has repeatedly gone un-checked on the anarchic geopolitic. INdeed numerous statist and liberal democracies have engaged in aggressive action with enormous benefit.

the US manifest destiny resulted in the destruction of native american society without a whimper from the anarchic geopolitic.

the use an example, a PDA with a large navy could easily take the strait of hormuz to “defend” it from privateers and piracy and charge a “small” transit fee to oil companies passing through the straits.

this action and numerous others are always sanctioned once they are successfully executed since the act of taking a center of power is far more difficult than defending it.

moreover, the arbitration agency and other private firms that tried to alienate the victor of a lucrative prize would gain an aggressive enemy with increased funding and on the ascendancy. they are more likely to try and join the party.

rrelevant since you already admitted good Mutual Defense Agreements will lead to less war, and thus a more profitable PDA.

absurd, I plainly stated that these agreements need constant and expert nurturing to be beneficial and more frequently they are a prelude to armed conflict.

an aggressive PDA could hide its intentions and lull competitors into complacency with these kind of arrangements (see hitler 1936 – peace in our time)

Not if those actions made all it’s employees/stockholders outlaws.

outlaw status means nothing if those doing the labeling dont have the will or the means to check it. it is all hot air. the driving force behind anarchic society would be wealth creation and power. And the “outlaw” PDA that was successful would have far more capital and investors than a timid “moral” money losing PDA and its equally cautious parent arbitration agency.

investors dont give a damn about the morality of aggressive action, they only demand return on investment. moreover, there wouldnt be a final arbiter to challenge a rogue PDA. The rogue PDA is equally as likely to merge with the dominant arbitration agency since it would be a natural fit for both aggressive, growing, and increasingly profitable firms.

hell, i would buy stock in that conglomerate, and you probably would too. LOL

wealth doesnt flow to stagnant enterprises that dont assume risk.

It essentially means that anarchist courts will no longer have you in their courts since clearly you’ve violated their laws and will no longer abide by their decisions in regard to this.

thats a ridiculous statement since no single anarchic court would have absolute authority. If an aggressive PDA need sanction for its aggressive money making ventures it could easily find an arbitration agency that welcomed risk taking and wealth creation.

I’m ARGUING that it IS profitable to cooperate with competitors in defense from a mutual threat since taking it out now, when you have an ally, will be easier than taking it out later when you don’t. But again, you already agreed to that.

your assertion is illogical. the more sturdy and large the alliances the more likely the PDA can morph into a hegemon cartel and assume absolutist power over all other professions and industries.

on the flip side, the more decentralized the PDA industry, the more likely there will be conflict as the disparate PDA via for power.

lastly, if anarchic society is so peaceful, why the need for any PDAs and if PDAs are necessary within anarchic society, why would one assume illogically that a paradigm of trust would exist among entities formed solely on the need to provide security

in sum, it is a paradox that anarchists claim ad nauseam that anarchic society is peaceful and PDAs are necessary at the sametime. moreover, within this dynamic they are careless and illogical to assert that these armies will be benevolent and trusting toward each other – when their very creation was motivated by distrust and the security offered by superior force.

It was another point as to why a PDA won’t become a state through invasion/forced monopolization.

you assume too much when you assume that all PDAs will be defensive in nature. large PDAs will establish subsidiaries that will be offensive in nature whose risks will not be insured and whose costs will be borne by speculators.

these subsidiaries would be involved in aggressive action. they could take oil fields, water sources, mineral deposits, et al with little loss of life and large upside monetary gain. arbitration agencies can be bought off with profits. indeed, the more aggressive and successfully led, the more likely these firms will grow in size and power — they would have increased funds for weapons development and procurement, training, funding, recruiting, et al

in contrast, your polyannish standard PDA who did not expand into offensive operations would lose market share from more aggressive and versatile PDAs

Yes it does, because it has everything to do with whether or not that firms employees become outlaws or not.

ridiculous statement. history is written by the victor.

simarily, in anarchic society – profit and market share goes to the victor. the PDA that is successful in the execution of armed force will write the anarchic laws.

today’s “outlaw” firm will be tomorrow’s peaceful benevolent and successful PDA. It all depends on who wins the spoils, not some paper pushing arbiter, insurance agent or lawyer’s definition of “outlaw”

you forget these clowns dont have armies.

in sum, the anarchist is too naive, ignorant, and dismissive of armed force and its utility at forcing societal change to ever have the wherewithal to establish a viable and sustainable society.

Says the man who’s always saying “Give me the quote where I said it’s Impossible for liberal democracies to go to war”. So, what am I about to say hmmmmmmmm. Did I say anarchism eliminates immoral behavior? By the way, Anarachy also makes those funding the war pay all of the costs of war, thus offsetting the plunder.

if you believe, as I do, that anarchic society wont be any more moral than society today, then how can you assume that anarchic society will punish the use of armed force more effectively than say a liberal democracy?

moreover, liberal democracies have never waged war. also, there is little civil disorder or violent political change within liberal society.

lastly, you missed the obvious difference between liberal democracy and anarchism. within anarchism, the PDA funds, trains, plans, commands, and executes autonomous any other entity. moreover, they operate in relative secrecy and receive all of the plunder and rewards from a successful operation.

in contrast, the military in a liberal democracy is dependent on the taxpayer for funding, the civilian leadership for command, and it receives virtually nothing from a successful operation. these tend to reduce the risk of armed conflict as history has shown.

Anarachy also makes those funding the war pay all of the costs of war, thus offsetting the plunder.

this is a manifestly naive comment.

you obviously dont understand how the market works. anyone can receive funding from venture capitalists, banks, investors, et al without risking a penny of their own money or with a small amount of investment.

indeed, powerfully and competently led PDAs will receive funding to gain profit for speculative and equally aggressive investors.

Unless they trick/obfuscate the voters into thinking it’s not a war for profit.

and history has shown that leaders in liberal democracies who engage in costly and reckless wars are voted out of office. the system promotes only just wars because so many of those that fund and fight wars do not benefit from wars for profit.

in contrast, the anarchic system promotes and encourages wars of plunder of strategic and geographic centers of power.

So how exactly is it that I’m predicting what the market would do.

thats easy, you have repeatedly rejected the efficacy of aggressive wars as profitable without a shred of supporting empiricism or logic.

All I said is that if a PDA could convince an insurance company that they would have to pay out less money if the PDA under took a preemptive war, that the insurance company would allow it. How is that at all predicting whether or not the insurance company would be convinced?

again, you demonstrate ignorance of the real market. namely insurance companies are not the only source of capital.

i am getting tired of anarchists spouting economic nonsense when virtually none of them have made a dime in the free market as an entreprenuer or an investor. and most of them are tenured academics on the government dole or liberal arts students attending college on student loans.

yet, you are all experts on the machinations of the free market. it would seem that if anarchists are so knowledgable regarding market mechanisms that could easily gain power by investing in profitable enterprises and schemes like buffet or soros.

moreover, economy of scale and specialization of labor predicts a PDA hegemon emerging.

All those situations can be equitable.

logic dictates that the PDA that has resources nearer to those it serves will provide more effective and timely service.

If I’m a statist or liberal democracy, I DON’T HAVE TO CONVINCE ANYBODY.

statist true. however, you are mistaken if you believe that liberal democracies can go to war without a societal consensus. moreover, once engaged in war liberal democracies summarily remove leaderships who are reckless and costly in the execution of war whether just or not.

the USA congress can stop funding to any military action and end it immediately. the AMerican people can vote out leaders who engage in conflicts they disapprove, and lastly the military can refuse to fight as occurred in vietnam in the early 70’s

Again, for more, please listen to that essay.

what is it with this one dimensional tunnel vision on insurance companies ?!

again, you dont need an insurance company to gain funding. indeed, most risky and potentially lucrative enterprises will not be insured – yet they will receive amply support from aggressive venture capitalists, banks, and speculators.

And then I’m going to have to remind you that profit seeking firms will not allow such people to become their leaders, since those types of people will lose them money for all the reasons posted before this.

manifestly absurd and false.

we DID NOT have a mutual defense agreement with kuwait (your typo). moreover, saddam wasnt insane, he was miscalculating. indeed his actions were always predictable and rational if miscalculating.

funny, my first correction had more to do with your ridiculous statement that saddam was insane. of course he wasnt. he was an aggressive, adept, and skill politician. conversely he was a failure as a military strategist.

The PDAs that gain hegemon status will NOT be led by fools or insane. they will be led by men like alexander the great, ceasar, genghis khan, napoleon, et al.

But really, if you want a list of reasons why that’s bullshit, Here you go. That at the very least, stands to the same standard of proof that your Iraq 1991 example of free trade not stopping war.

the source you cited is subjective, feeble, and uninformed.

pakistan has never been a liberal democracy.

lebanon has never been a liberal democracy, much less a viable state since israel was fighting hezbollah which by any objective measure is adespotic sharia society

yugoslavia was not a liberal democracy

peru’s leader assumed dictorial powers in order to fight ecuador —moreover, i have never listed either of these nations as legitimate liberal democracies.

the list goes on and on,

indeed, anarchists like hoppe et al have absurdly cited the southern confederacy as a liberal democracy despite the fact that 1/3 of its citizens were treated the same as pigs.

nice try but I challenged the anarchists on this thread to produce a hypothetical case study of war between the liberal democracies I listed in a previous post and this challenge remains unanswered.

please refrain from changing my accepted definition of liberal democracy. what you have cited are simply your definition of what I consider oligrachs, failed states, and outright despotism.

I didn’t assert anything. I told you the argument you made, and the argument you quoted had absolutely no relation to each other. If a preventative war and an annex resource war are indeed the same, then that firm and it’s employees won’t become outlaws, not because it’s an annex war, but because it’s a preventative war.

history is written by the victor.

simarily, the successful PDA will be its own arbiter.

What do you think inefficiency does? It loses you market share, and thus power relative to your competitors. That is just mind boggling to read.

manifestly absurd and mathematically unsound.

if walmart like PDA earns a net profit of 10% from 500 billion in revenue, it is less efficient than a smaller PDA (target) that earns 20% from 50 billion in revenue.

YET, the walmart like PDA still increases in power relative to the smaller PDA by profiting more in REAL terms wih 50 billion in profit versus 10 billion from the more efficient firm.

moreover, I am aware of numerous successful firms who simply decentralize the whole into more manageable semi-autonomous units that negate this fallacy of diseconomy of scale.

Becoming an outlaw firm is a MASSIVE cost due to having to pay every one of your employees enough to become an outlaw.

diseconomy of scale (if valid) is meaningless when a firm reaches hegemon status. large firms though far less efficient at leveraging assets than a smaller competitor, still increase in overall power.

Sure a dominant firm may arise, but the very second it tries to forcibly expel its competition, it loses all of its employees and stockholders who don’t want to be outlaws

i am always amused by the grand naivete of anarchists who think that profit driven individuals and enterprises will suddenly become moral and civic minded once they have realized their overarching goal.

“power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely”

everytime I have cited this quote the naive anarchist rejects it, yet intuitively every rational, objective, and independent thinking individual understands its truth.

moreover, the second a firm reaches hegemon status — IT WILL BE TOO LATE FOR ANARCHIC SOCIETY.

no, sam – the cartel, investors, employees, et al that worked so hard to attain hegemon status will not immediately surrender the fruits of their hard earned and risky enterprises in a fit of guilt and regret.

do you believe in mickey mouse and santa claus too !

You respond with unanalyzed trends to praxiological arguments. All the same though, you’ll be on our side eventually. Since 1913 our economic freedom has been deteriorating faster than our civil liberties have been growing, and we’ve been killing more an more people as we go. Excuse me if I don’t see the trend towards freedom as a whole.

we have seen dramatic and substantive improvements in civil and political rights since 1776. however, I will acknowledge the disturbing increase in economic coercion since the 1930’s (or the establishment of the Federal reserver in 1913 if you like)

it is my contention that the reversal of this trend is already occuring and will manifest itself in the november elections with an overwhelming conservative victory. moreover, i predict that this trend will lead to a fiscal conservative in the white house in 2012. then we will see if our constitutional federal republic is dynamic and nimble enougth to offset the entitlement, tax, and regulatory disaster that is on the horizon.

if not, then I will be with you – and god have mercy on the statist when classical liberals enter the fray – we will show you how to take power, you can enjoy the capitalist spoils.

It linked to a Wikipedia article on welfare.

I dont generally cite links that can be edited by a five year old.

wikipedia is one-sided leftist rubbish — it is about time that anarchists fund a competitor.

Clearly something else is the cause.

there is only one thing certain regarding liberal democracies and that is that standards of living have always increased from generation to generation.

at least until the present. moreover, AMericans have never had half their income forcibly taken from them, we are coming close, but not quite.

Lastly, I think that we can still roll back crony capitalism and outright socialism within the framework established in 1776, or more accurately 1789.

still, I acknowledge that the next 10-20 years will be critical. no matter what happens, I am prepared for any eventuality and well armed with ammo, jim beam, philly blunts, and vienna sausages.

to paraphrase a chinese adage*: it is fortunate that we live in interesting times.*

If nothing else, then states will still exist, and so armed conflict may be necessary. Everybody pays the PDA hoping they will never have to use the service, and just like medical insurance, it uses all of that money towards the customers that do need defense. War would be considered like a natural disaster, and the PDA is a protection against it..

you are aware of the trillions in toxic housing assets that even the most savvy and experienced investors thought were liquid and secure ?

the free market is effective, but it is not infallible. During periods of uncertainty and volatility “customers” will naturally flock to the largest PDA that has the most resources, hence they will naturally encourage the establishment of a hegemon PDA in the quest for improved security.

this is another market force that will lead to the establishment of a hegemon PDA who would then likely assume absolutist power since there would be no logic or profit in allowing a competitor to emerge and the chaos and uncertainty associated with armed conflict and competition for power.

initially many “customers” would welcome the emergence of a single hegemon since this would end serious conflict. however, I believe that the allure of power will lead to abuses and ultimately absolutism.

the state has a much larger free rider problem e.g. welfare, social security, Medicare, Medicade, Public schools etc. I’d ask you not to continue to argue the free rider problem in this thread though, since another thread was created for that.

these programs are unsustainable. I believe they will be privatized in the next 10-20 years.

if not, then you may not have to wait long for anarchism.

Care to explain the how you came about to over 50% of the world’s most accessible reserves?

when, not if, a PDA assumes control of this checkpoint by force since its ownership is valued and will be disputed. the navy that takes it will be able to hold it since they have demonstrated the ability to (1) project power the fastest and (2) defense is a force multiplier against the attacker.

In sum, if a PDA was strong and nimble enough to be the “firstest with the mostest” at any geographic and strategic center of power then they will likely have the wherewithal to hold it. more importantly, capital will go to the firm that holds a resource versus one that covets it.

actually the middle east has over 70% of the world’s most accessible oil reserves. However, the USA has over 3 times the oil of saudi arabia sitting in the southwest US untapped.

It’s also ludicrous to think that a firms employees will all accept becoming outlaws for chump change.

And with that, I think I’m done. This has taken way too much time. I’m gonna go program something.

a firms employees will do what they can if the price is right. and taking the oil in the south china sea, or the head waters of the nile, or niger uranium, or ukraine farmland, or control of the eastern seaboard of the USA, et al will reward an aggressive and risk taking PDA handsomely.

no doubt they will “feel real bad” cashing their fat checks at the local bank.

i will give you the last word since I think this thread is about run its course. and I wont be in a position to make substantive comments for the next few weeks. but I will read any responses.

good luck with your programming.

LoL, Am I mistaken or is there a contradiction in there ??!!

You are mistaken. IF a PDA can make a profit from an aggressive war, it will wage that war. However, IT WILL NOT be able to profit from aggressive war, Thus it will not wage that war. There is a conditional and then a response to that condition. Then there is a denial of that condition, which in turn, rejects the response to that condition.

again, how can you reject thousands of years of human history and the numerous unrelenting conflict between individuals and states and assert without any substantive logic or empiricism that with the emergence of anarchism the motivations, efficacy, and benefits of armed conflict in providing for food, water, shelter, security, wealth and power will be rendered obsolete ?!

Because the anarchist society has never existed, thus the entirety of human history has absolutely nothing to say about anything that happens under the anarchist society. And I’ve provided you with plenty of substantive logic, most of which you’ve rejected as unsubstantive without arguing against it, or haven’t responded to my rebuttals to those arguments.

prove it !

I have been. Don’t use this as an assertion to restart using arguments which have already been argued against. Such as the following

throughout history aggressive action has repeatedly gone un-checked on the anarchic geopolitic. INdeed numerous statist and liberal democracies have engaged in aggressive action with enormous benefit..

That argument is the same exact argument used here

in sum, if all war was unprofitable, then why have so many occurred?

Here’s another

the US manifest destiny resulted in the destruction of native american society without a whimper from the anarchic geopolitic.

I even specifically and preemptively refuted this argument with this

The argument isn’t that all wars represent a net loss to the aggressor, nor that PDA’s will not attack if they determine that they will net gain from an aggressive war. The argument is that aggressive wars in anarchic societies with PDA’s will not be profitable. So I’d ask you not to say “Did America not profit from taking over Indians?” That’s not what we’re arguing. -Sam

I’m tired of arguing in circles. You need to start arguing against the statements at the end of the chain of arguments, not the beginning ones, especially using arguments that have already been argued against.

the use an example, a PDA with a large navy could easily take the strait of hormuz to “defend” it from privateers and piracy and charge a “small” transit fee to oil companies passing through the straits.

this action and numerous others are always sanctioned once they are successfully executed since the act of taking a center of power is far more difficult than defending it.

moreover, the arbitration agency and other private firms that tried to alienate the victor of a lucrative prize would gain an aggressive enemy with increased funding and on the ascendancy. they are more likely to try and join the party.

You again neglect the cost of outlaw employees, putting them at a disadvantage to those people defending that strait, which you already admitted was easier to defend than attack. So they are double handicapped. All your arguments here are for PDA’s, not against.

absurd, I plainly stated that these agreements need constant and expert nurturing to be beneficial and more frequently they are a prelude to armed conflict.

What do you think I meant by the word “Good”?

an aggressive PDA could hide its intentions and lull competitors into complacency with these kind of arrangements (see hitler 1936 – peace in our time.

And again, insurance agencies and security future speculators would not be as easily lulled into complacency as the statists or liberal democracies of WWII.

outlaw status means nothing if those doing the labeling dont have the will or the means to check it. it is all hot air. the driving force behind anarchic society would be wealth creation and power. And the “outlaw” PDA that was successful would have far more capital and investors than a timid “moral” money losing PDA and its equally cautious parent arbitration agency.

You are arguing from a position that they’ve already won. When they are about to attack, they have yet to win. You are asking your employees/stockholders to take on a massive amount of risk. If you fail, they all die. For that risk, you have to compensate them. You are constantly talking about the strait of Hormuz. So they’ve taken the strait of Hormuz. Now what? The courts are all going to forget that they did that? They’re going to forget each employee and stockholder responsible for that aggressive action? Of course not. In order to ever aggressively take over any single place like that, you have to take over the entire society first in order to stop any retribution against your employees/stockholders. But in order to take over the society, you need a massive amount of income in order to pay for the risk taken on by your employees/stockholders potentially becoming outlaws and destroying the firm that they own stock in (and thus their profits right now). That payment will cut into your profits, making it harder to gain capital investment, reinforcements and the like when compared to your competitors, who don’t have to pay their employee/stockholders such massive amounts for asking them to take such a giant risk.

could somebody else take over the rest of the assertions in this? I need to go to bed.

The clients care. Which is why the PDAs will care. Duh. That’s exactly what they’re being hired for, to be just - in the extent and scope the clients recognize them to be just.

Granted, if the majority of people consider murder and rape to be just, well, then that’s exactly the type of PDA that will be prevalent. But " HISTORY HAS SHOWN LOL" that mankind does in general prosper best in peace. Violence is most generally wasteful.

I wouldn’t, they’re doomed to be retaliated against and lose everything, sooner or later. Like the state will. Would you buy a U.S. bond right now?

Wealth doesn’t flow to enterprises who are just breaking windows either.

But so can anyone else; that’s not the point. The point of a free law system is not to open up your own court and justify aggressive acts; the point is to let those in conflict to resolve their issues in the best way they can afford. An aggressive PDA will gain nothing trying to squelch objection to its acts in an unpopular court; it will have to be in a court which both parties agree with; you can’t be your own judge. The prosecution won’t put up with that.

Think in the global scale; if you were to found your own country, nuke switzerland, and judge your own act to be just, that still doesn’t stop the other courts from judging you insane and taking action against you. It will be a fight over laws that would come to a better end civilly, but considering that you’re obviously a thug who’s trying to cover up your obviously violent acts, they’ll just ostracize and retaliate you in whatever way they deem proper.

And the customers can leave it for a new one just as easily. Your point?

You seem to be scared of a massive PDA taking over, but you don’t realize that’s just what the government is, today. Are you afraid of a state? What the hell. If people are able to transit from the most massive and coercive PDA of all time, to a system where they choose their own, I have no doubt that it will be much, much more unlikely to go back in time; as it is unlikely that an american citizen today will bow to a king ever again.

PDAs don’t compete for “power”, again, you’re thinking in a statist world. PDA’s don’t own their customers, they deliver a service.

Do law firms compete for “power” too? Retailers? Walmart and MacDonalds have “power”?

We are assuming that a PDA would be desirable, you’re right that it may not even be needed. The market will tell.

And “a paradigm of trust” exists in many ways in many other facets of life, not just in the traditionally economic sense. You trust that bread will be sold in the morning, that your workplace will still be open, that the TV station will be broadcasting your programs, that your family will be there to help you as you helped them, that your wife and kids are on time and love you, etc., etc..

Think for a second when you criticize the market; you’re criticizing every free interaction of man…

It’s as much as a paradox as saying that people that are hungry are people who will be full. Duh.

Plus no one said ancap is entirely peaceful, just that vis-a-vis, protection and law services are better serviced in the market, and therefore we expect it to be more peaceful THAN a centrally planned society. Stop the strawman for the 654984th time, kthx.

And those PDA’s are exempt from their subsidiaries actions? And no one will notice that link? They’ll make window breaking a profitable experience? No one will ever get them? And WE are assuming too much? Okay. I think you’re absolutely wrong, the more a crime is committed, the more likely the perpetrator is to be caught. Since crime investigation is also a scarce resource (detectives are limited, transportation is limited, etc.), it will also be best allocated in the free market; therefore, vis-a-vis again, such activities will be better stopped in the free market as well.

In fact, that thing with subsidiaries.. I can think of it as a state having secret agencies that carry out assassinations and terrorism all over the place? Yeah.. I wonder if that happens ALREADY… in the STATE… you know. Nah, the CIA and FBI are good people I’m sure, I’m sure.

Oh damn, you ARE describing the US military complex then! Sorry, I thought you were talking about a non-coercively-funded, monopolized group.

If it’s so profitable, tell me, why is the US, that does all that as is, in trillions of debt? Mr. Empiricist, sure you have a clever answer for that.

You’re not even talking about PDA’s anymore. You’re talking about how a murderous corporation could come into existence, right? How it would be profitable to kill and savage? You must be retarded, because the whole point of having a PDA is to DEFEND against such violent opportunists. The type of PDAs WE are talking about are exactly cheaper because there is such a thing as a defensive advantage; it is cheaper to defend than to attack. And even if it wasn’t the defender can at least make sure that the offender will be retaliated on and no profit will be made, LONG TERM.

There is a reason why violent crimes are more often committed by lowlife thugs, and it’s because they don’t pay a high cost of opportunity, and they don’t think LONG TERM. They just rob and kill what they can and the future is uncertain. What the good guys do is always think ahead, and foil everyone else’s plans of getting rich by robbing them. A PDA won’t even come into existence in a world where it’s cheaper to attack and long-term profitably so, I agree with you. BUT ITS JUST NOT THE CASE, OR SOCIETY AS IS COULD NOT EXIST. The STATE with all its inefficiencies would NOT BY A LONG SHOT BE ABLE TO STOP CRIME. And yet it does, poorly, but it does some. The state is composed of men, just as PDA’s would be. If you compare VIS-A-GODDAMN-VIS like you SHOULD be doing WEEKS ago already, you’d see why a defensive PDA could outperform and render a state useless, and be the most prevalent type of PDA. An aggressive PDA is an oxymoron anyway.

God, you make me mad with these stupid scenarios. What’s next, the PDA will put a tank by your house and take your stuff?

What are laws? Who are the laws written for, who paid them to write those laws, and who has to respect those laws? Compare the answers, ancap v. statism.

Think real hard as to who will best mimic those laws to the moral sentiments of the people. Or just goddamn read some Kinsella if you’re that hopeless.

Briefly, laws are just codes that people can choose to abide for or not. They’re not for conflict-prevention, they’re for conflict-settlement. The state uses laws in a retarded way, and are almost completely exempt to what the people want the laws to be. Laws are a scarce resource as well, there needs to be law makers, law judges, law advisors, courts, documents, etc. and guess what, THE MARKET IS BEST AT ALLOCATING RESOURCES. OH SNAP.

It depends on what the majority of costumers want, yes. But in that, it’s not all that different from what democracy tries to emulate. Customer demand.

So you need an army to write a law? Fair viewpoint, not very popular of course, but if you want to go the whole might makes right route, be my guest. Considering you’re a statist, you had to have some of that in you, of course.

Yeah, we’re too naive, thinking that people can best organize without force. We should use the whip and the gun more, to get what we want. That’s the way history has thought it the best way, right? Has PROOOVEDED it so. PROOFDENED it!

Condescending much?

Given that a liberal democracy ALREADY HAS COERCIVE ARMED FORCES I’d say that NOT HAVING COERCIVE ARMED FORCES in the first place would make it, at the very least, ONE LESS ARMED FORCE TO NOT BE USED. THE BIGGEST ONE ALSO.

If that was your true worry, you’d agree, but of course it isn’t. You’re just fooling yourself at this point, saying “oh we just have to shoot everyone to save everyone” type of deal.

LOL K.

LOL K.

Sure is nice when people are whipped but don’t revolt. That proves… exactly nothing. Even if it were true.

They don’t do all that. Perhaps you missed the point as to why they’re paid in the first place?

They’re paid for protection. And if they do anything more than protection, they pass those costs to the consumer. The consumer will either bear the burden or go to a cheaper and more efficient PDA. Walmart didn’t get big by raising armies and robbing people, they got big for doing exactly that which they’re paid to do, better than anyone else, and that’s how corporations grow. Your point about PDA’s doing things that they haven’ been paid to do is as much relevant as saying Walmart will take over the world in ancap.

Would you pay a company that 1- charges you an exorbitant amount of money to do things you didn’t ask it to and 2- doesn’t tell you what they’re doing? How the f*** would a PDA grow to do that, and if a PDA was a rogue agency to begin with, why are you calling it a PDA?

Second, you’re describing the CIA. Pure and simple. The government has WAY more opportunities to be secretive. Don’t get me started on the incentives. It’s pretty damn obvious that someone who’s terms are fixed, monopolized, and are scrutinized only once every few years is going to do more sh** than someone who’s constantly under market competition.

LOL, you say taxpayer funding like it’s a bad thing. THEY GOT THE MONEY FOR FREE. THEY CAN ASK FOR MORE. THE OPERATION GOES BAD? EVEN MORE REASON TO ASK FOR MORE MONEY FROM THEM SUCKERS. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? TRILLIONS IN DEBT? NO PROBLEM, PRINT MORE, BORROW MORE.

Can a PDA do all that? Sorry, you’re just digging yourself at this point.

LOL.

That’s it, I’m not answering this guy anymore, past this post. I’m sorry Rettoper, but you’re just dense and condescending. No way around it.

Yeah. It’s so easy to get a few million dollars for your window-breaking project. People just blow money all the time. Now, the government? Those guys know what’s up. YEAH. ROFL. Because THEY have ALL THE MARKET INCENTIVES AND PRICE CONTROLS TO DO SO. HOW? I DON’T KNOW, BUT YOU CERTAINLY DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ECONOMICS IF YOU DON’T AGREE, DURR HURR.

No, and even if you’re competent at breaking windows, all you’ll become is the USA military complex, indebting all it’s “customers” and “investors” along with yourself.

Bush didn’t get voted out. He served the max two terms. History has shown that central planners are retarded and the people keep trying to snag that statist carrot, keeping the state wagon moving.

In contrast, the anarchic system promoted and encourages defense against plunder of strategic and geographic centers of candy.

That’s easy, you have repeatedly rejected the broken window fallacy without a shred of supporting empiricism or logic.

Again, you demonstrate ignorance of the real market. Namely, insurance companies are not the only source of capital. There’s also rich evil jews and Santa Claus.

I am getting tired of statists spouting economic nonsense when virtually none of them have made a dime in the free market as an entrepreneur or an investor, and most of them are tenured academic on the government dole or liberal arts students attending college on student loans.

I’m also tired of getting tired.

Yes, we are such experts that we believe we can devise a system where everything will be fine and dandy so long as everyone follows our rule.

Oh wait, no, that’s you. I’m sorry, I’m getting confused, copying your posts, making fun of you and all.

You know why austrian economists find themselves to be experts in human action? Because we admit to ourselves that we’re human, so unlike Mr. Empiricist like you, we don’t try to answer our questions about ourselves through external clues. We can just ask ourselves and be done with it. If you disagree, that’s OK, you can fool yourself all you want, but you’re not fooling anyone else who has any introspection.

moreover, economy of scale and specialization of labor predicts a SHOE-MAKER hegemon emerging. WE WILL ALL HAVE TO WEAR THEIR SHOES, GUYS, CANT YOU SEE HOW DANGEROUS THIS IS?!? I CALL IT SHOEMOPOLY.

Well I could also go with..

moreover, diseconomy of scale and specialization… etc.

…or another set of baseless assertions.

Logic also dictates that marginal differences can exist in the service provided by different PDAs such that a PDA slightly more distant can be cheaper and better than the positionally convenient one.

It can go with a majority.

And the leader can be as bad as he wants - as long as the majority doesn’t bother impeaching the leader, he won’t be impeached. You don’t see that vis-a-vis, democracy is far less responsive of market demand. Elections only every two or four years; socialized participation through votes; a majority can rule whatever they want over the minority; etc.

Sure they can rettoper. But can YOU? Can YOU and anyone else who doesn’t want in on that project NOT pay for it? No, answer is, you can’t. You have to pay for it or go to jail. Is that nice? Is that best? You seem to think so. Why? I don’t know, you seem to be making up all sorts of excuses though.

Refuse to fight in vietnam? Why would you pick such a failed example? It didn’t matter the objection There was a draft bro. People were dragged to a war they didn’t want to go to. And some died. I don’t know the numbers, I’m not Mr. Empiricist after all, but that there was a draft, that I know. What a retarded example to show “the power of the people”. Turns out it ain’t that strong. And you keep fooling yourself that it’s any better than voluntary action.

You think that if you want something you have to vote->get the right representative->force you and others to do what you want.

Instead of you know just, getting what you want to the voluntary extent you and everyone can. Why bother with that, right? Let’s just use the gunverment and be done with it. Lol.

Sure they will. And the window-breaker will too. And no one will ever stop them. Because offense is cheaper than defense. Because violence is profitable. Because long term, war wins. Because people can’t and won’t protect themselves.

Sure.

So because there may be an evil genius in the future, we have to put up with an evil dumbass as our leader?

Or more hilariously speaking, wait for a good, genius, and altruistic leader? LOL K THEN.

Mankind will be extinct before that happens.

Already addressed.

They can’t be their own arbiters if they’re unpopular. Think state. If a society is to turn from statism to ancap, it has already won the battle against the biggest and most evil PDA they’ve ever had.

Oh damn, I’ll say that again because it sounded good.

If a society is to turn from statism to ancap, it has already won the battle against the biggest and most evil PDA they’ve ever had.

Uh, assuming they were charging the same per customer, the smaller PDA can underprice walmart and steal market share…

If a company is more efficient, it will always be able to at least grow more than it’s competitors…

Of course Walmart can blow all their capital into destroying the world, but the thing is that long term they’ll lose share because they’ll become unpopular, and just like the fallen state, will fall as well.

It doesn’t negate it. Even if they’re breaking up into smaller autonomous units, those units are still paying unneeded overhead to the corporation. So an otherwise equal company can avoid those costs and charge less. And if they’re not paying overhead, then well, corporate isn’t directly getting anything from it anymore. Just name recognition I guess.

Uh, leverage goes into account, still doesn’t disprove it. It’s a matter of fact that if you have more employees than needed, you’re wasting resources, and you’re getting in the way. Maybe not so in the case of raw production and more material companies, where more is almost always better, but I find diseconomies of scale to be particularly true in the realm of services and human interactions. I haven’t studied the subject to be honest but it’s pretty obvious to me. You can’t just hand-wave it away.

They will be moral and civic when they’re paid to be moral and civic, is the bus that you’ve missed many-a-times now.

The market can best serve that demand, while democracies can only poorly emulate or steal signals from.

Companies do not have the kind of power you’re talking about. Not more than a shoe maker has that same power.

If anything, that quote by Lord Acton goes in the anarchist’s favor, since you’re the statist contemplating using power to get what you want…

THE WORLD WILL END IN 2012. GIVE ME YOUR MONEY BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

The state won’t either, but what matters most is what the customer wants. Oh wait, never mind, the state can just jail you, I forgot.

I don’t think he does, and I don’t either, but you seem to believe some sort of state will use its coercively attained powers to give you only what you want, and never take anymore than what you wanted to give it. That’s wishful thinking if I ever seen it.

God have mercy on those poor thugs who were forcing people to do things and getting paid for it.

… wait what? They can go to hell if there is one, for all I care.

And I really don’t care for what you think will happen.

I’d think you would be advocating for a socialized online encyclopedia at this point.

For the defense of information, from predatory agencies who profit from vandalizing articles or some garbage like that. Would meld into the rest of your arguments flawlessly.

There is only one thing certain regarding the sun rising in the morning and that is that standards of living have always increased from generation to generation.

Meh I’m done, not like I care anymore. Sorry Sam.

You haven’t debunked a thing. I tried to explain to you why there cannot ever be an empirical test useful to economics. Here’s an expanded explanation:

  • Historical examination does not work. History is not suitable for isolating single variables. For example, I could claim, “Unemployment is higher today than in 2005 because George Bush isn’t president anymore.” And if you were intelligent, you would respond, “Quite a few things have changed since 2005. In fact, almost infinite variables have changed. How can you be sure that is the one?” Then you could go on to list some plausible alternative causes, like the fact that you lost your lucky keychain. Neither of us can ever win such an argument; there is simply no way to trace back all effects in history to their causes. If I find it, I’ll give you a quote from Human Action.
  • There is no such thing as a controlled experiment in economics. If you don’t understand why, propose one and I’ll poke holes in it.

“Strife” is not a measurable quantity, so this argument cannot go anywhere. All I have to do is say, “Oh yeah? I think there’s lots of strife.” and you are stuck. Your argument is no stronger than my counter; both must fail.

Nope. They claim that anarchy would minimize it. Do you understand why?

By “nations”, you mean the average citizen. However, it’s the opposite for the politicians, who gain from war and get nothing out of trade.

Power structures that win wars come out ahead, despite the fact that the populace loses.

### Objection ### Status
We already have anarchy between the states. Zombie*
Anarchic societies cannot defend themselves. Not addressed.
PDAs will morph into governments. Not addressed.
Intellectual property… Not addressed.

*Refuted. Just let it die, already…

Rettoper, I just realized that I don’t even have to prove intellectual property is wrong/bad in order to defend anarchy. On the contrary, you could have intellectual property in an anarchic society. For instance, whenever you buy, say, a painting or a song, the contract could specify that you can’t reproduce the work, etc. The only difference is that, in anarchy, enforcement would be competitive rather than monopolized. We are already arguing about enforcement and monopoly, so I don’t think intellectual property needs to be a separate debate.

### Objection ### Status

PDAs will morph into governments. Not addressed.
Intellectual property… Refuted (Can anyways)

I’ll respond to the rest now.

investors dont give a damn about the morality of aggressive action, they only demand return on investment. moreover, there wouldnt be a final arbiter to challenge a rogue PDA. The rogue PDA is equally as likely to merge with the dominant arbitration agency since it would be a natural fit for both aggressive, growing, and increasingly profitable firms.

Have I ever once said that anybody wouldn’t do something because of morality? No, the entire argument has been how self interest would make it unlikely that PDA’s would start aggressive wars. It not only makes them targets for retaliation, but it would be subject to severe business ostracism. Productive businesses would disassociate with them out of fear that they might be aggressed against in the event of a conflict between them, or that they might become targets of retaliatory force against the aggressors, or that their own reputation would be tarnished due to ties to the aggressive firm. Insurance would never cover them, and their leaders and employees would be subject to personal liability since there’s no such thing as sovereign immunity, and likely high quality employees would be less willing to get involved in such an organization.

And again, let’s deal with high value targets like the strait of Hormuz. Who’s wrath do they have to deal with in order to take over that strait. First they have to deal with the land owner’s PDA which is protecting that strait. Then they also have to deal with the wrath of the PDA’s of people who have contracts to cross that strait in place already. And if that doesn’t work, then they may have to deal with any PDA who the original land owners are willing to transfer rightful property ownership over to them simply out of spite to the douche bags who aggressed against them in the first place. That PDA can do exactly what the original aggressive PDA did with all the same benefits of what the origianl aggressive PDA is getting, except now the original aggressive PDA is severely weakened due to expending resources against the first two set of PDA’s, and this new PDA doesn’t have to pay their employees/stockholders a great deal of money for the risk of becoming outlaws.

hell, i would buy stock in that conglomerate, and you probably would too. LOL

wealth doesnt flow to stagnant enterprises that dont assume risk.

And it doesn’t flow to enterprises that assume too much risk, e.g. an aggressive PDA.

thats a ridiculous statement since no single anarchic court would have absolute authority. If an aggressive PDA need sanction for its aggressive money making ventures it could easily find an arbitration agency that welcomed risk taking and wealth creation.

Again you fail to understand how customary law works. If a court ever decided to sanction something like that, the rest of the courts would immediately disallow rulings from that court to have any effect on their rulings, and it would no longer be a court. When you have disputes between customers of different courts, they each go to their court and get a ruling. If those rulings are different, each of those courts agree on a third party court to make a ruling. Any court who accepts bribes/makes insane rulings like letting an aggressive firm steal from people will lose reputation as being a fair arbitration firm, and will lose its customers, thus no longer being a court. Other courts will ostracize it, advise their customers to never do business with it’s customers, and no longer make dealings with it. Seeing as the court no longer has any connection to the rest of society, anybody who ever wants to deal with people of other courts will immediately switch courts.

the more sturdy and large the alliances the more likely the PDA can morph into a hegemon cartel and assume absolutist power over all other professions and industries.

on the flip side, the more decentralized the PDA industry, the more likely there will be conflict as the disparate PDA via for power.

You have yet to support this with a shred of evidence. The mere fact that they will fight against a common enemy exacting a survival level threat (the state/aggressive PDA) != They instantly have all the same interests/won’t compete with each other. There’s a difference between a self enforcing cartel, and a non self enforcing cartel. Cartels fail when ever cooperation will lead to some firms give up market share for another firm in the cartel without receiving a sufficient benefit. Stopping a survival level threat is one such benefit. But what does it gain by not lowering its costs of production and undercutting the other firms in the industry if it can do so? Nothing. You have two market pressures on all these firms going in opposite directions. Those pressures fall to equilibrium somewhere around stopping survival level threats, but competing for customers, on a society wide basis. So yes, some companies agreements will lead to merging, and others will lead to not helping each other, but those aren’t necessarily bad things. A PDA in mexico may not receive enough reduction in risk from helping a PDA in New York fend off a statist Canada. But that will leave resources there to fend off against Mexico.

lastly, if anarchic society is so peaceful, why the need for any PDAs and if PDAs are necessary within anarchic society, why would one assume illogically that a paradigm of trust would exist among entities formed solely on the need to provide security

Why have a sticker on your house that advertises you have a security system? It’s a deterrent.

in sum, it is a paradox that anarchists claim ad nauseam that anarchic society is peaceful and PDAs are necessary at the sametime. moreover, within this dynamic they are careless and illogical to assert that these armies will be benevolent and trusting toward each other – when their very creation was motivated by distrust and the security offered by superior force.

Anarchist societies aren’t completely peaceful. It just generally lacks institutional aggression. Outliers will come to exist and quickly be put down. And they aren’t Benevolent, they are completely self serving. But the best way to be self serving is to cater to customers demands and to act in a tit for tat manner. That’s not news to you, right?

you assume too much when you assume that all PDAs will be defensive in nature. large PDAs will establish subsidiaries that will be offensive in nature whose risks will not be insured and whose costs will be borne by speculators.

these subsidiaries would be involved in aggressive action. they could take oil fields, water sources, mineral deposits, et al with little loss of life and large upside monetary gain. arbitration agencies can be bought off with profits. indeed, the more aggressive and successfully led, the more likely these firms will grow in size and power — they would have increased funds for weapons development and procurement, training, funding, recruiting, et al

No they won’t because those subsidiaries would invite retaliation against the entire firm, not just the subsidiaries. That invitation of retaliation would again lead to costs for the firm going up for all the same reasons described before. Ostracism, Employee costs rising, stockholder evacuation, retaliation, disassociating firms, court rejection etc.

in contrast, your polyannish standard PDA who did not expand into offensive operations would lose market share from more aggressive and versatile PDAs

That “versatility” brings loses and reduction in market share, not increase. Should Microsoft diversify into launching computers into the sun?

ridiculous statement. history is written by the victor.

simarily, in anarchic society – profit and market share goes to the victor. the PDA that is successful in the execution of armed force will write the anarchic laws.

No body writes laws in anarchic society. It’s organic and completely dependent on general customer preferences. The courts are simply there for non violent dispute resolution. If one side is committed to violence, then there’s no point in even going to the court. Other PDA’s will just kill them and take all their resources without any fear of Ostracism, Employee costs rising, stockholder evacuation, retaliation, disassociating firms, court rejection etc.

today’s “outlaw” firm will be tomorrow’s peaceful benevolent and successful PDA. It all depends on who wins the spoils, not some paper pushing arbiter, insurance agent or lawyer’s definition of “outlaw”

you forget these clowns don’t have armies.

You say that as if there’s even a fraction of a percentage chance that a firm could pull off a coup on an anarchist society without an existing power structure, territorial defense monopoly, and taxation method to take over. Nobody with any sense at all is going to attempt to fund that. And nobody with any sense would have enough money to fund that. When an investor invests in an aggressive firm, they aren’t just putting up that money, they are putting up all of their property, since they are liable to be brought up on charges as being a willing participant in aggressive theft.
