He’s a drunk who married a gold-digger, then had an eighth child with her in his fifties. He knew the law can be manipulated in divorces. Obviously, he is not in control of his actions. What’s the point in standing up for the guy?
I don’t see too many people defending him outright. My annoyance is with the media’s hysteria over the use of a racial slur, which is apparently more important than the allegation that he may have hit his wife. It’s also more important than people getting killed in the Middle East, an oil executive’s wife almost getting blown to bits by an exploding box of candy, or increasing unemployment.
Given Gibson’s political and religious affiliation, it’s clear they are pouncing on him for ideological concerns and shock-drama ratings. Racism sells.
In the broader context, the game is on against the Tea Party. I am not a Tea Partier myself, but reckless charges of racism infuriate me. It’s the lowest form of human discourse there is. MSNBC continues to show pictures of people holding up signs with pictures of Obama with a Hitler mustache as evidence of “racism,” (as if the left never held up signs of Bush with such imagery)
The left’s fetish for racism as a political tactic is every bit as disgusting as the right’s use of anti-Americanism.
We should start calling people nationists.

Let them enjoy their ignorance then. I’m sure racism wasn’t considered an insult before it became (rightly so) a taboo.
I didn’t realize how much they’ve been talking about him on TV since I rarely if ever watch it, especially news (propaganda). I guess I can see why someone would want to defend him.
How about we just start calling them nationalists? That would make more sense. Actually, statist is best, because nation does not necessarily mean government, just a group of people

I think his point was that cable news by nature goes for the trivial and annoying.
I have a pessimistic belief that the reason why people are interested in these “soft” news stories. Average people want to feel informed about the news of the day, but if they learned about the national debt, the failures of our foreign policy, and the ineptitude of politicians and government in general, they would be forced to question their statist beliefs. These fluff stories allow them to watch the news and stay “informed” without having to admit to themselves that “government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.”
I don’t like the mainstream news because it’s always about negative, horrifying stuff. I’d much rather read about positive stuff like this.
I don’t see why anyone should defend him in light of these recent allegations. However, Lewis S. is right when he says that the media obsessing over it has to do with his past anti-Semitic comments. Back when I was a leftist I use to feel the same way about racism, but since my conversion to libertarianism I see that while racism is at odds with individualism if a stateless society is going to work people must tolerate or at least accept other people’s lifestyles and opinions.
I avoided the Natalee Holloway stuff for the most part, but if I remember correctly, it was only Greta on Fox that really covered it. She’s more or less the political version of Entertainment Tonight. All fluff pieces with the “glitz and glam” of politics… I don’t know how anyone can take her show seriously.
The Natalee Holloway case did bring up questions about Aruba’s legal system and whatnot, but overall it was a pretty useless story. Not that her death wasn’t tragic, but abduction/murder happens all the time. I never figured out how the news picks which ones they devote all of their attention to and which ones to ignore. This infotainment is what the market demands, but we have a right to complain!
