Me and my gf both have been called hipsters and are both anarchists?
There’s the obvious musical differences in what indie music really is, and what big record companies are trying to sell off as indie. The same would go for hipsterism. Generally, this is what people think what hipsters are.
I’ve been called a hipster because I wear a beanie, Joy Division shirt, and have a nice beard. Someone may call someone a hipster just for drinking PBR. You can even have “hipster” black metal like Agalloch or Wolves In The Throne Room. The term is getting tossed around by people who are now denoting things as what they see to be trendy in whatever sub-culture there is.
Either way, my girlfriend concluded it’s more trendy and fun to make fun of hipsters than to be one.
well, first it was emos.. now hipsters.. Emos are disliked, because they care how they look (piercing, hairstyle etc), on the other hand, hipsters are disliked because they usually do not care how they look. If one wears a hat like yours and has a beard, one will likely be called a hipster 
madness.
What? Of course hipsters care about how they look, and care to pretend they don’t care, because it’s so…ironic.
Well, again, too broad generalization I made, but many of them who are accused of being a hipster - don’t. Those “true ones” are called simply fashionable
i think there could be a positive argument to be made that the market would produce fewer pathbreaking bands than consumers would prefer as a result of positive externalities and high transaction costs.
The market is the only way to determine how many pathbreaking bands consumers prefer. So if the market never produces any ground breaking new bands then… then consumers have decided to exchange their resources for other things the prefer more.

@Bert, I like plenty of metal (Baroness and Mastodon come to mind, although Mastodon isn’t as “indie” as they used to be). But really, I think Wolves in the Throne Room have to be the most unlistenable thing I’ve ever had the displeasure of entering my ears. Well, that and Will Smith’s daughter’s “Whip My Hair”
My library got wiped out a while ago and I haven’t been keeping up with a lot of indie music recently. But some of my favorites are Animal Collective, Rural Alberta Advantage, Wolf Parade, Fleet Foxes, Neon Indian, The Knife, and a few others. The Killers and The Strokes don’t really count as indie, but those are my two favorite bands with Bloc Party at a not-so-distant 3rd and New Order at a distant 4th.
How about the rest of you hipsters?
Indie and punk used to be about DIY. I thought the whole aesthetic was individualism; at least in terms of expression. Cheap was king because you don’t need a lot of money to put out records… especially today.
Now it seems to be ‘mom and dad’s trustfund’ in the US. And the government in all these other countries.
I hope that government will start helping people run their myspace accounts and maybe even put the strings on their guitars. Each band should have an Americorp worker carry their amps everywhere.
That’ll show the system they won’t cave into their conformist ways!
I used to think it was ridiculous to have to buy one of those ‘starting your own band for dummies’ books. Now people basically need others to chew their food for them, those books seem like down right old school.
I’m not that into most metal. My main taste are 80’s punk/hardcore/post-punk, and neo-folk. My girlfriend listens to some black metal so some of it rubs off on me. Another band she’s really into is Fall of Efrafa, which is considered a hipster melodic crust band, or whatever (I’m sure that’s not what they call themselves). I don’t think its bad music, I caught myself enjoying WITTR one day, for black metal I don’t think it’s bad, but in the black metal scene it’s not widely accepted because their music is more positive than negative.
I just started listening to Fleet Foxes (through my girlfriend), as well as Great Lake Swimmers. It may be a long shot but if you enjoy acoustic music try Sol Invictus and Death In June (their neo-folk years).
