No, I am not making a critique of hero worship here (all Third World nations are prone to it anyway), but what good did he ever do to his country?
He managed to inherit one of the wealthiest and most prosperous nations in Africa with some of the highest standards of living of those times. He then drove an agrarian society into the ground with rapid industrialisation forced by heavy state spending, as if an African nation needed steel and expensive dams more than it needed the food and medicine that private entrepreneurs were providing. Ghana already had schools, railways, and hospitals from its colonial days, but Nkrumah wanted to build an expensive welfare state anyway.
On top of all that, the man became an oppressive dictator, and when ordinary people opposed his policies, they would be detained under arbitrary arrest. In fact, his powers of free arrest were used to take over private businesses in the country by force.
All of this led to Ghana quickly becoming one of the poorest nations in Africa from once the wealthiest.
You don’t have to be a libertarian to know that this man failed as a leader on every front possible. He ruined the lives of millions of African people. Millions of them. And once he died, they built a huge expensive memorial to the man.
To what purpose?
