It is the nature of people to disagree and seek some power to resolve issues or conflicts. They voluntarily submit to the state, in its various forms. The state, by its own nature, proceeds to expand its original purpose, aided by people who seek special advantages or power over others. In time liberty is dead. Eventually the state collapses or a new power takes over that isn’t all that much different from its predecessor. There are occassional moments of enlightenment, but overall the same pattern continues. The only way to break this cycle is for everyone to agree, and that my friends was the root cause of the problem.
Those who favor liberty can only savor the moments when humanity breaks from this pattern of self-imprisonment. Only people who steadfastly refuse to give power to another and refuse power over another can live in a truly libertarian society. That’s a bit utopian, and not very likely to occur. The best we can probably hope for is for the vast majority to learn and move toward libertarian ideals; most important of all being a free market economy.
A libertarian dictator with control over society would not be libertarian, neither would his society. Oh, he may have a free market economy, but politically he could hardly be called a libertarian.
