WikiLeaks Has Been Nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize

According to this Norwegian article (Aftenposten).

Here is the nominating Norwegian MP’s own blog post in English.

I am all for exposing government secrets and support wikileaks, however the Nobel peace prize has become nothing more than a political score settling institution, when the Nobel prize starts handing the awards back to people like a Mother Theresa instead of US presidents or green activisits, it will gain some legitimacy.

I understand your skepticism towards the prize and the committee. And I agree.

The prize is awarded by a committee of Norwegian politicos. Always has been that way. The 1919 prize was awarded in 1920 to Woodrow Wilson. Even before that Theodore Roosevelt was awarded it.

Not a fan of the Nobel prize either however if WikiLeaks were to win it would pose a sweet irony seeing how agents of the 2009 recipient are currently engaged in an all out persecution and smear campaign against WikiLeaks, it’s head and contributors.

Indeed!

That being said, neither the sitting POTUS nor WikiLeaks are worthy laureates according to Alfred Nobel’s will. Nor is the 2010 laureate, who apparently is a neocon supporter and a proponent of hard Wilsonianism.

Julian Assange doesn’t deserve to be smeared by the same prize won by “pacifists” such as Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Woodrow Wilson, Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and Barack Obama.

Well, makes more sense than president-ELECT Obama.

Strictly speaking, he was not President-Elect when the nomination deadline passed. However, he had not been in office for more than around 300 hours when the nomination deadline did pass. (The committee members have a later deadline, which is the first committee meeting, which must be held at a time that gives reasonable time for nominations to arrive in the mail, after the official deadline has passed, but that doesn’t make much difference.)
