I have friends that meet once a week to watch documentaries and discuss catastrophic events, and what to do during those events. It may seem odd to you that no one has proposed running aimlessly into the woods, but rather helping one another. It’s not collectivism, it’s what one would do during any catastrophe.

Yes, YOU would need others to do things for you. I want to learn how to become 100% self-sufficient so the only person I have to rely on is myself. That’s what being an individualist is all about.

You’ve pointed out a huge problem facing civ as it is: people’s constant dependency on each other. People are always thinking that others will do everything for them so they never bother to learn any new skills themselves. It’s a result of the state reducing the incentive people have to learn these things and by the state education camps dumbing everyone down.

What makes you assume the state’s thugs would go looking for individuals “in the woods”? If anything they’d be looking in the cities for the most people they could enslave. And what makes you think the state would come back after a collapse?
Do you really think the state (Our state. the empire state.) will roll over and die? It will cling to every facet of power and influence that it can. That’s why i consider Martial law to be more of a threat than the mad max scenario.
The people in the cities will be dependent with no source of food or defense and therefore will be the first to go. The people who are alone in the woods will be next as they sweep around looking for organized resistance. Organized restistance will fare the longest.

As soon as the military or law enforement runs into the lone survivalists in the woods they will kill them. And it will be no problem for them either because the loner has no support. No one will look for him no one will help him if he gets in too deep.
No but I do think the state will eventually go bankrupt and won’t be able to sustain itself. That’s when it will have to resort to more totalitarian measures (anything from mandatory ID chips to more HAARP-created disasters to causing mass hyperinflation to wiping out a large number of the population) to keep people in control. I also think that the growing food shortages will cause civ to weaken in general and may lead to its eventual collapse.

A place with a DOCTOR. I seriously doubt 99.9% of the guys out there are gonna be able to help their wives give birth by themselves… what if there’s a complication? So many things can go wrong that you can’t forsee.
Big cities are obviously bad… Only downside to a small community is that you’ll probably be forced to pool your resources- AND… being the intelligent schmucks we are who’ve been preparing for a collapse(saving food and ammo), we’ll probably have the most to lose.

To answer the thread question: no civlization won’t collapse. It declines, it rises, but it never fully collapses. History has shown there to be periods where a civilization, due to social institutions or otherwise, going into declines called dark ages. And they’re dark for a reason such as living standards decline, education becomes nearly extinct, and economic activity to name three negative things regarding them. But in each case, civilizations always climb out again. There are excepts to be sure such as the environmental disaster that befell the Easter Island inhabitants, but these exceptions are exceptional for the fact that they hinge on extreme scarcity rather than institutional/social breakdown.
To compare to our situation, it’s clear we’re no where near a dark age or even a major decline, although we will see living standards decline. And it’s all due to institutional errors, not ones created by market actors. If anything, the marketplace has been the ultimate social safety net against such a disaster. It would take the complete destruction of market mechanisms for such a disaster to occur. Until then, we’re just running between crappy and less crappy conditions.
OK. But I would still learn primitive hunter-gatherer and survivalist skills and practices just in case. I follow sites like InfoWars and sometimes I think primitivists, while a bunch of eco-nut tree huggers, may be on to something.
Interesting. I have a bit of a unique view on the societal collapse issue: I believe that global warming/climate change, food crises, the growing amount of mental illnesses like autism among children, pending dollar collapse and most of the other “usual suspect” threats to civilization and human society are real. HOWEVER I believe the state and the “puppet masters” if you will are the ones behind it. So move to New Hampshire, stock up on gold and silver, learn hunter-gatherer skills, become a survivalist and learn how to live only for yourself.

No. Living like a HG means complete freedom. Freedom from obligation to others (collectivism), freedom from coercion brought on by civilization and freedom from the poison in our food and medicine (also from civ). It’s about being totally self-relient and getting back to the ways humans are supposed to live. And if you need something from someone else, you pack gold and silver to use as a universal means of exchange.

I agree with the philosophy of anarchy and antiquity based diets and things like that, but there is no way i’m living in the woods alone, only coming into contact with others to trade. What about the enjoyable parts of life, music, sex, etc…? Pretty sure man has always relied on those two things to survive as well as food and water.
Sex and music are good, but when the goal is basic survival you need to prioritize. Learn the skills, get the gold, move to the free state, that’s my goal.
