Even if he was a citizen of America, he must have signed a contract to not reveal any “secret information” so that his leaks could be considered a treason. Simply by being a “ciziten” doesn’t make one liable. No contract - no crime.

    (a) Whoever commits an offense against the United States or aids, 
abets, counsels, commands, induces or procures its commission, is 
punishable as a principal.
    (b) Whoever willfully causes an act to be done which if directly 
performed by him or another would be an offense against the United 
States, is punishable as a principal.

So here's their game plan:

Manning will be tried for treason, violation of the espionage act, and will most likely be convicted.

The DoJ will try to swing a deal to implicate Assange as a principle and co-conspirator.  

They will pursue Assange as a princple and co-conspirator.  Grand Jury is meeting in Virginia.

I doubt they have the evidence, but they will try to take this as far as they can in order to save face and to make Assange an example.

So in other words, the U.S. will try to convict Assange as a principle and co-conspirator to treason.  Doesn't matter if he is or isn't a U.S. citizen.  If the U.S. wants him, they'll go get him.
