The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt is pretty good although it is a fairly statist account IMO. That point is made very clear in the introduction. I don’t know if it was accurate, but it was enjoable, although reading with a constant capitalism-induced-erection was quite painful.
