Reading what Bastiat said about a hypothetical Jacques Bonhomme and deLong’s very accurate commentary on it, I am starting to realize what a great job Hans Hermann Hoppe had done in finally eradicating the is-ought dichotomy forever, because even giants like Frederic Bastiat would come to a point where they say that if something is immoral or involves coercion, we must still accept that such things should be done where they provide a greater benefit. Hoppe’s nice articulation of how consequentialist and deontological values are one and the same is where a clear argument could be made both for liberty and for general welfare.
