Should woman-degenerating clothes like the burqa be illegal in a libertarian society? Burqas also represent a security problem, and it’s a mobile prison for many women.
Nothing intrinsically wrong with Burqas. You could view them as merely another fashion choice. Government institutions (for as long as they exist) should ban employees from wearing overtly religious symbols
Very few women outside of Afghanistan wear a “Burqa”(which pre-dates Islam btw)- most just wear the headscarf. What’s with the nonsense that they’re all being forced? Many women WANT to wear them- just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean anything. There’s plenty of women that protested against any hijab bans whenever governments tried them. Most muslim women that are in a country like the United States- their husbands and fathers DON’T want them to wear hijab for fear of discrimination but they want to do it anyway. Your head is really far into the sand, try talking to some Muslim women, and don’t assume that they’re husbands are waiting right behind them to strike them down.
Outside of a Prison states like Saudi Arabia where women are forced to be covered- any Muslim women you see wearing a covering is 110% more than likely doing it because of her own beliefs. You wouldn’t ban head coverings for Nuns would you? I’m sure those evil priests are all forcing them to wear that too.
How would we be able to find criminals if they could simply hide behind a burqa? People would feel more safe when other people around you aren’t anonymous.
How would we be able to find criminals if they could simply hide behind a hockey/ski mask? I think you should rephrase that last sentence to “I would feel more safe when other people around me aren’t anonymous.”
Although I am usually the last one to defend laws created to “protect” us from ourselves, I believe that the burqa creates a dangerous driving environment in which the burqa-clad driver has ludicrously limited vision. I see no reason to ban a form of self expression except in the case of driving when it can present unique hazards to other drivers.
The issue of whether Burqas are desirable or not is immaterial to a true Libertarian. As long as nobody’s natural rights are infringed there is no problem
