Clever defense for getting pulled over

So would you mandate health insurance, too? And mandate exercise? Ban smoking? After all, smokers impose a health cost on all of us, right?

Can’t do one without the other and be consistent.

I’d probably go with a bigger strawman. Complete and total subjugation is a must.

Indeed. Good thing I didn’t propose that.

I’m all for individual reponsibility. His offense was driving with an expired tag, not damaging life and property. If he had killed someone in an accident, had no insurance, and was unable to repay the victim’s heirs, perhaps he could be subjugated to their service for the remainder of his life?

Driving without insurance may be irresponsible for some folks who tend to cause accidents. Driving without due care is irresponsible for all folks. In my twenty plus years and half million+ miles of driving, I’ve never caused an accident nor made any insurance claims, knock on wood. When I was 15, state mandatory min. insurance costed me $80/year, now it is about $800/year. I remember complaining about the cost as a kid and the insurance agent saying,“Don’t worry, It will get cheaper as you get older.” Watta racket, forcing you to bet against yourself..

Cash4Gold might be a multi-billionaire that was ripped off too many times by insurance companies in his past. While refusing to give them another dime, he could be prepared to take responsibility for any damages he created?

Ah, so you’re inconsistent. Good of you to admit it so that no one will bother with your opinion on this matter.

First, sorry my rant seemed like it was directed specifically at you.

He got ticketed for the tag, but he was knowingly driving without insurance. Which as you mentioned, might be ok if he was capable of restitution in the event of an accident. My point was, the big bad state ticketing him doesn’t excuse him for taking an irresponsible risk at presumably the cost to others if there had been an accident.

Granted, I don’t know him. Perhaps he is a millionaire who had to borrow a car, doesn’t have his own insurance and is ready to make good on any damages he incurs. Maybe he isn’t looking to get out of paying the ticket, but will resist paying it because he has the moral high ground vs. the state.

If that is the case, I am dead wrong.

If this was an anarchist society, no state involved, I don’t think it would be unreasonable, on a communal (unowned) right of way that expectations might evolve that everyone using the right of way be prepared to provide compensation for accidental (or malicious) damage. A common law.

It’s not dissimilar to an argument that a speeding ticket is illegitimate on a state road, when I think we all recognize that there could and probably would be some sort of speed regulation on private/communal rights of way.

This is known as sarcasm. It was an appropriate response to your strawman.

Honestly, I don’t know why you bothered in the first place.

Yet it wasn’t sarcasm. Clearly you are inconsistent. Ergo, you weren’t being sarcastic; you were protecting your belief from scrutiny. It’s a very old defense mechanism.

In the future, you may not want to sound like the statist apologists.

I think it was when you include the phrase I used immediately after it. Context matters, unless one is constructing strawmen.

I am fallible, so it is not unreasonable that I could be inconsistent. But I am not dishonest. And pretending to know what another person believes, is dishonesty.

Which is a false conclusion, because I followed up in more detail to bbnet.

From my lips to your burning ears.

LS - np no offence taken. I enjoy reading most of your rants, thankfully none have been as absurd as a millionaire borrowing a car … lol

My papi who survived GD1(great depression no. 1) always warned me to be wary of Mr. BIG (banks, insurance, and government) which may have skewed my perspective towards insurance companies, perhaps there are a few good ones out there despite the fact that they are in a highly regulated industry?

And consistency matters, unless one doesn’t mind being a hypocrite or using the same fallacious nonsense the statists use.

Just some friendly advice, that’s all. Trying to help you construct better arguments.

Insurance (in all sorts of forms) will be an important part of a post state world. What we have now is not a free market. In order to engage in risky ventures (like driving) many of us will need a way to hedge our bets that we won’t cause damage beyond our means to pay.

As regards Mr. Big, I carry no insurance public or private. I don’t drive and I don’t own any property worth insuring (in my opinion at least). And I pay privately when necessary for health. So I am certainly the last guy to argue for the state. Just common sense.

I agree wholeheartedly. It’s good to be consistent, use complete quotes in context, make founded assertions, etc.

I do appreciate the help. It’s always good to test myself against strawmen and Ad homs to make sure I am bringing my “A” game. Thank you amigo!

Then I trust you’ll no longer commit the same error as the statists. Good. Glad I could help you stop using a fallacious argument. If you need any more help being disabused of fallacious garbage that you believe, just let me know. It’s a service I provide and I don’t even charge for it.

I wouldn’t trust me. I’m a scoundrel. [;)]

No problem. I was happy to point out your use of a strawman.

I guaranteee you will be the first person I think of if there is any fallacious garbage posted on the forum.

You should charge for it. Penny for your thoughts or some such thing, assuming they are worth that much.

Wow. Such a crime.

A Han Solo or Lando Calrissian scoundrel?

Yeah, if there’s one thing that’s not tolerated around here it’s the belief that the initiation of force is morally proper. Glad you’ve stopped believing that it is. I’m also glad that you’ve stopped buying into legal positivism. Good on you.

No problem. I was happy to point out your use of a strawman.

There is so much intolerance these days, don’t you think?

I can’t tell you what a relief it is that you stopped posting strawmen suggesting I did.

I’m also glad you stopped buying into legal positivism!

I already thanked you, but I want to thank you again. Great job amigo.

Maturity at its best…

Eh, it’s all fun watching him think he’s being smart. Quite enjoyable.

One of us thinks he is very smart, but it is not me.
