I am posting this on various forums I attend to hoping somebody will enlighten me.
The EU is in a hurry to have all members States signing the proposed CO2 curbing treaty by the end of the year. All was fine and well until the present economic crisis hit. Now Italy and Poland have called themselves out or, to be more correct, they have asked for a revision of the cost/benefit assessments, which is sure to take at least a year. Both countries claim they cannot afford the CO2-cutting measures without crippling economic activity. According to the “rumor-mill” other six unnamed countries are ready to join the dissenters.
French President (and former Mossad agent) Nicolas Sarkozy, one of the leading “gorettes” in the Old Continent, is desperately trying to defend the plan, probably because it would fit very well with the proposed expansion of France’s already impressive nuclear power facilities. German chancellor Angela Merkel, formerly very vocal about the need to cut CO2 emissions, is refusing to comment the present situation.
What I am asking is this: could this be some kind of theater? Is it possible that the EU has realized how much it would cost to reach the prosposed CO2 emission limits and is now trying to get out of it as elegantly as possible? Is this related to the present economic crisis or did they finally realize we simply cannot afford the costs involved?

Let’s have a recap: we all know that the EU plan mainly revolves around theoretical quotas (nobody’s gonna fix capture sensors to everything to measure true emissions) which will be calculated using again paper datas, namely how much diesel or petrol cars you have going around, how many MW/h of electrical power you generate and in which way etc. If a country cannot meet its quota, no problem: they can buy carbon credits from an “officially recognized” enterprise, from another EU country or from another country which signed an accord with the EU. Which usually means Russia. Until here we are cool.
We also know that CO2 cutting measures are also hailed as a way to “cut our dependency on foreign oil”: in the last few years autarchy, that concept so dear to Mussolini, has being making huge headways in many EU countries. The idea is always the same: if people spend their money at home, they’ll help the economy. Not even worth commenting that.
Finally, and this is what the average person on the streets (not the high-wage, well-spoken urbanite who thinks to know everything about Gaia because he’s attended a Green party meeting and considers other human being parasites worth of extermination) think, there’s always the possibility that there will be many more taxes levated in the name of “fighting climate change” and it will be pretty much the end of it. Pay and you can “pollute” as much as you like. That would be ironic to say the least in a Continent where every single political leader takes pride in being a Socialist.
And that’s pretty much the end of it. All the TV shows about glaciers crumbling down and algae proliferating in the Mediterranean because of the heat (it’s ironic to consider that the first fully documented alien algae invading the Mediterranean “escaped” from the Monaco Aquarium, whose director at the time was green hero and mankind hater Jacques Cousteau) are just propaganda worthy of Goebbels & co.
In these days I had various thoughts about the matter: desire to keep Russia at bay by levying a large tribute, a French plan to have other EU countries pay for their new nuclear power plans, a scam to resume nuclear powerplant construction in many countries on the cheap… but I still feel like I am missing something. Sure the average eco-con, a more detestable variant of the neo-con, is a powerful and well connected but they are so few… crippling the entire economy just to appease a few green millionaires is something that not even Berlusconi and Sarkozy, as mad and ignorant about economy as they are, would do. So this leaves me back to the starting point: are they just playing games or are they seriously commited to this?
