Is that why we are seeing a problem with them popping up everywhere? In the free market would people just burn their trash instead of paying alot of money to store it in a landfill?

I would think that if people own land and want to let people dump trash there they could. They could charge them and they could possibly burn what they could.
I think we should be launching trash into space. Especially radioactive stuff. How much harm could it do there?

My understanding was that regulations limited the amount of space that could be used as landfill, which led to exagerated claims of running out of space and garbage overflowing our lives.
This still makes landfills more profitable than they would’ve been otherwise (restricted supply), but it certainly wouldn’t explain an increase in numbers.
