Some tough choices with these two very lofty, very German names

On the Ludwig’s, I think I have to choose Bethoven on this one in a close three way race. His Große Fuge and 3rd symphony are what nudged him on top of my “Ludwig list”.

This race is even tougher to call, but I’ll have to give it to Nietzsche in a coin toss, mostly because of the “killer 'stache” and making the person Zarathustra from an absolutely obscure figure to a slightly less than obscure figure. Major head nod to Hayek, Lang, Schiller, and Holderlin though. Lang’s monocle and cigarette holder almost made him pull ahead of the pack as Holderlin and Schiller split my usual sympathies for “men who wear wigs and tights”.

For bonus points if you want to list your favorite “Johann” go ahead, it’s an even tougher call IMHO (but no Austrian economist is on the list that I am aware of):

I am more than tempted to pick Kaspar Schmidt (AKA Max Stirner), but I don’t think I can pick him over Bach.

It’s spelled Feuerbach and you can count in Ludwig Popper, if you want. List is in fact spelled Liszt, since he was a german/hungarian and depending on the origin of the author he has different names. In my town, there is a “Liszt-Str.”, so that’s the spelling I would use. Oh and its Engels, I think, and for copying it’s Hölderlin, with a umlaut.

If we go by most liked, I too have to choose Beethoven (just listen to his Heiliger Dankgesang) and Hayek. Hayek because of his epistemological work.

I’d add Ludwig Boltzmann to the mix too. A clearly innovative genius in his own field comparable to the likes of Mises and Wittgenstein in theirs.
