We Europeans are increasingly getting more and more afraid of speaking our minds about Islam as it makes one the target of life-threatening violence…
Sucks for people who live in Europe. It seems like the biggest reason for so much Muslims immigration to Europe is because most of those countries are welfare states and it’s almost impossible for an employer to fire you. If you got rid of all those laws I gurantee you that the majority of Muslims would stop immigrating there to take advantage of the taxpayer funded welfare programs and the ones currently living there would find it a lot harder to get a job. Which might prompt some of them to leave.
I think the free market can solve almost any problem, including Islam.
Funny thing the European attitude towards Islam and its followers. On one side there’s barely a media, left or right, which doesn’t go to incredible length to scare the Hell out of you by telling you how bad “some” Muslims are. Very wicked men, they are madmen, fanatics, they are not afraid of death if they can blow up a single Infidel etc. On the other side we are being presented “Islamic” culture as wonderful, varied and very friendly. Too bad the medias and governments idea of “culture” is not the exquisite Tenth Century Arabian poetry or refined metalworking from Central Asia but bellydancing, couscous and leftist authors that will bore even a Parisian intellectual to tears in less than an hour. It’s a little bit like presenting European culture as made of techno dance, pizza and Mancuse and leave Goethe and Cervantes in the dumps.
Oh and let’s not forget most European governments will force you into being tollerant but have thousands of troops in Afghanistan, Africa etc ready to turn “ragheads” into targets.

That’s the government model for you: import problematic people who generate social conflict, set a legal standard that people of wildly divergent backgrounds have to love each other, and increase the state to realize this goal.
In other words, government policy creates a problem, then the government creates more policy to deal with the problem it created.
Islam today is another form of totalitarianism.
I remember reading an article by the English columnist, Theodore Dalrymple, who was a prison doctor in for many years. He said that religion seemed to offer some form of succour to many of the inmates, but those who seemed to have rejected their faith most were the former Muslims – white underclass girlfriends, children out of wedlock whom they had abandoned, drug dealings, and the signature gold front teeth. Dalrymple hypothesises that this is a result of the all encompassing nature of that particular religion, and that once it cracks it shatters completely.
I also remember another English columnist, Bernard Levin, proposing that the totalitarianism of Communism could not obtain long term because of the impossibility in controlling the inflow of information, in those days that being cassettes and videos.
I live near which has a reasonable Muslim population and I remember seeing a group of Muslim girls within sight of their mosque. Apart from the way they dressed, which was Middle Eastern casual - they were not wearing the black burkas, and from the fact that they were holding cans of Coke rather than beer, they acted like English underclass girls – hanging out in groups, leering at boys, chewing gum etc. As any parent knows, fighting peer pressure is pretty much a losing game.
There is no doubt that Islam is a problem here. Dalrymple is one of the very few journalists brave enough raise the issue of young English Muslim girls disappearing out of school and being sent to to be married to a relative, underage and against their wills.
But the bigger problem here is the state’s response to this Islamic threat. One of the few areas that we are ahead of the is in giving up our liberties. The UK renounced Habeas Corpus before the US did and, even though we were assured that this would only affect hardened terrorists, within weeks it was used to eject and detain a Labour Party delegate heckling his own party over Iraq at their annual meeting, and it was used to break up a protest over high fuel prices by lorry drivers. These lorry drivers were blockading the Fawley oil refinery and were told by Police that if they did not move they would be arrested and detained without charge. Fuel prices in the are the highest in and 90% of that cost is tax, but it is clear that there will be no Boston Tea Party in this country.

Forcing a woman to marry against her will completely goes against Islam. Those actions come from old, pre-islamic tribal culture which is still around in many areas in Pakistan. Many things are wrongly associated with Islam but date back to traditions that came way before it- such as female genital mutilation, honor killings, forced marriages- etc.
It gets a bit frustrating to explain this to people many times over- but I suppose that’s the same struggle everyone’s had in Mises.org, trying to convince people that the current economic situation was not because of the free-market- or convincing people that the republican party isn’t pro-freemarket.
Indeed, compared to the customs of beduin tribes of Arabia which it replaced Islam was actually progressive. Much is made of its unequal treatment of husband and wife in marriage, but actually the rights granted to the wife and limitations and obligations it put on the husband were before unseen in many of the places where it took over.
