If this country disintegrates further, it’s likely some sort of social group will be singled out and blamed. We’ve already seen strong negative attitudes towards the mosque and Obama’s comments. Even so called “libertarians” have strong opposition to anything Muslim. All it takes is one radical leader, an indifferent public, and an economic depression for the situation to turn Nazi-like.
Growing number of Americans worried they might be Muslim:
Probably not. Fortuantley, since the Republicans are openly anti-Muslim, the Dems are going to defend them. Fortunatly, in this case anyway, the Republicans and their views are now and have been for quite some time the “junior partner” when dictating social trends that make a difference in the application of government power.
Look at Pakistan: it has been hit by some of the worst floods in recent history and nobody’s giving a damn. There’s no fund raising, no pop star has announced a relief concert, even CNN seems uninterested. Heck, not even Al Gore (to quote a personal favorite of yours) has stood up and said “unless we do something about global warming these things will become commonplace!”. It’s like those poor sods are untermenschen, not even worth of the same attention a few dozen whales recieve.
Like the Jews? You mean Muslims will become wildly successful, funny, inventive, entrepreneurial, and almost completely secular?
Hopefully.
I know you didn’t mean it how I am about to illustrate: but one should be careful (and not even including the holocaust) on how that group got there. They had to deal with some pretty nasty social reality via government discrimination to get to that point. There is little reason for a Muslim today to be thankful for being subsidized in a negative way because it will make thier offspring 4 generations from now much more profitable.
Shouldn’t ovrer generalise though. Not when Angelina Jolie is touring Bosnia as a preparation to directing and starring in a movie - some sappy crap built on the wartime propaganda no doubt.
Funny, I don’t recall Nazis bending over backwards not to offend Jews. We allow Muslims to build a mosque next to Ground Zero, while taking Nativity scenes and menorahs out of public view during the Holidays. If there is any resentment toward Muslims, it comes from the fact that they are now a privileged class.
Besides, we already have a radical leader, and he does not share the spotlight.
Muslims get harrased at airports, all around the country, openly hated, have our countries bombed and pillaged, and then suddenly if some lefty feels sorry for us (or is looking for political profit), right wingers see us as privelaged? As for the libertarians who are starting to have this attitude, it’s a retarded viewpoint. Muslims could be strong libertarian allies, as the government is shitting on them right now. Most of them oppose war, distrust the government and are capitalists. I’ve brought a couple Muslims over very easily. Besides I see bringing a person’s religion in the realm of politics as completetly useless. Why would you want to do that when a political alliance could be much more powerful and useful then silly religious debate? Sorry to rant, but I’ve been hearing this trash a lot lately. /end rant
Actually, American ethnic Muslims are among the richest, most well off, most well established, and moderated ethnic groups in the United States.
It is especially true for Iranian-origin Americans who are ethnically Muslim - such as eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and CNN reporter Christianne Amanpour.
One might rather argue that American Muslims being a part of the rich cosmopolitan elite in America wield slightly more power in the American government itself. And some do argue that, since the Sibel Edmonds case shows insider information being exchanged around with Muslims in the US government and the Bush’s connections to rich Arab families also made some right wing extremists angry.
Now wait! Would American Muslims condone all that profiling done on foreign Muslims in their country? It looks like there are many who do. And even encourage it. One of the most famous and angriest warmongering neoconservatives writing for David Horowitz’s Front Page Magazine is Muslim. And in the whole Ground Zero issue, I have seen plenty of opposition to it in posts by Muslim Americans which go: “I may be a Muslim, but I am an AMERICAN first.”
So I guess Muslims are a perfect match for the American culture of bombing foreign nations and making money.
