Freedom Strategy: It's not my job to teach you!

I noticed the Rothbard article about strategy on the home page and I think Rothbard makes several great points but the article needs more elaboration and the topic of strategy is of great interest to liberty.

I assert the following are the only viable liberty strategies in the real world:

  1. Create a majority of force

  2. Convince a majority of force

  3. Breed a majority of force

  4. Kill an existing majority of force

I am very fond of #1 and creating a majority of force. It is the quickest path to economic advantage. It is geographical organization. It is a group of libertarians relocating to one county, eliminating property taxes, and creating a competitive economic advantage that does not exist anywhere else in the United States of America. It is a group of libertarians saying we have x many people willing to relocate, lets find a county that has less than x people in it we can politically take over. People talk about decentralization and voting with feets and wallets but we aren’t very serious about actually voting with our own feet to create economic advantage.

Many people I know are very fond of #2. Maybe because they think #2 is easier. Is it?

Take that line of thought. Convincing people requires work. I have done a lot of research on the Constitution, U.S. history, and SCOTUS cases over the years and I can strongly debate a Constitutional position. I find the more I have learned the better I can teach it by making good analogies. Sometimes the topic might be something I haven’t researched in a while and I think crap, I have to do a lot of research for citations to make my point. Since I am the one selling the idea of liberty, it is up to me to perform an adequate sales pitch. If your preference is to convince people you are a de facto sales person and it is up to you to do the selling. If you are trying to sell something you do not tell your potential customer to read this or research that and then call you. You would not sell much if that was your sales pitch.

I am not a psychologist but I understand the mind works in pictures and if you are trying to paint a mental picture you tell a story. Reflect a moment on a teaching of Jesus Christ. He did not simply say pay taxes. He articulated a much larger concept… render unto Ceasar what is Ceasars. That is some good selling right there to say something a couple thousand years ago most people alive today would recognize if they heard it.

If there are 300 million customers in the United States you don’t tell customers they are poor students. It would seem more logical to become a better or more efficient teacher which would result in selling more ideas.

I think creating a minority of force is plenty. If you can hurt them in the slightest, they will leave you free.

This reminds me of the Free State Project, which aims to relocate 20,000 libertarians to New Hampshire (currently there are over 10,000 signed up, 850 who have already moved to New Hampshire). New Hampshire was chosen due to its small population and relatively small government. Sound like a good destination? The power of the Federal government would still be difficult to get out of.

I’m truthfully considering moving to New Hampshire for medical school just because of the Free State Project.
