General Preaching.

“It really isn’t any of your business.”

Guess whose business it is? And guess who hasn’t heard hide nor hair from anyone regarding the situation.

Now why is that exactly? At the bare minimum you don’t think they should be informed, as to what the decision was? “Why? Temp ban? Perm ban?”

I personally think it was a great loss. His approach was different, but it worked in several cases. A now former socialist posted about it awhile ago on here & explicitly named Knight, saying because of him - he decided to finally investigate the libertarian position, after continually ‘beating his head against the wall*’.* Knight knew his stuff and although he didn’t offer much in terms of elaboration - I found his posts helpful. Especially when the monetary cranks were around, or folks like mr1001nights.

Part of the reason I am here is for knowledge & the search for truth. I think it speaks volumes that the likes of sinceram, bloom and others who imo offer literally nothing (snide one liners / threads about their feelings / or in fact, openly admit they are trolls - then make threads that completely back that up and yet remain, while those who had something to offer, but not in the ‘politically correct’ fashion - get canned.

But yeah… what do I know? lol. For what it’s worth I don’t think forum rule #2 or #4 was broken, though of course the owners can do what they want - via #8, so by all means.. although I think it was misguided.

Come on Conza, KOB could be an incredibly incendiary and dishonest poster. How often, for example, I refuted Eupthryo he just ignored me and claimed you can’t just facepalm Euphryo. There are other examples to if you want any. And for the record I agree some posters on here don’t add anything and just leave snide one line remarks. As to whether that’s ban worthy is another question- I just tend to ignoren them.

Olovetto, go through the history of the forums, you’ll see plenty of posts by me that draw almost exclusively on Hoppe and Rothbard. I’ve read his Democracy: The God That Failed, A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism, The Ethics and Economics of Private Property, Economic Science and The Austrian Method and a number of his essays and interviews available on the Mises.org website.

The fact that I’m not willing to jump through the hoops you’ve set, when I’ve got other uses of my time, is hardly proof that I’ve not read Hoppe’s work. However, the attitude in question is exactly the attitude that stops a lot of the gains from trade in discussions on these forums. You’ve already assumed that I’m insincere and poorly informed, perhaps stupid to boot. Is it any wonder that you and I have learned little, if any, in our numerous disagreements?

As for my baseless assertions and appeals to authority. Regarding the latter, I actually believe they’re not always misplaced. Granted, the endorsement of an authority doesn’t make the argument for you. But when an intellectual puts forth an argument, the fact that they’re an expert on a subject would make the story their telling prima facie more plausible. As for my baseless assertions? Clearly, they’re not baseless, I changed my views over time and hopefully win change them in the future, perhaps this is based on irrational whims, but that’s a pretty low view to take of anybody.

I think it speaks volumes that the likes of sinceram, bloom and others who imo offer literally nothing

The sad fact is that scineram speaks more truth in those one liners than many other posters do in their PhD dissertation length posts.

Quite often, this is true. Sometimes, however, it just appears to be bickering against positions deemed “too radical” or “anti-common-sense”.

Anyway, his unique style has become somewhat of a fixture here. I wouldn’t want to miss it.

An expert as deemed by whom? It is the strength of his arguments that make anyone an expert or a non-expert. Being anointed as an authority or not by someone counts for nothing.

I think this is really what is at the bottom of the divergence of perspectives here. It is a matter of culture. You have a big problem with anti-intellectual intellectualism.

Thus the appeals to be modest in the face of the experts, the authorithies, the intellectuals, to be sure to read books before speaking, to ask Paul Krugman questions on things he allegedly knows about…

“his only point is that if you have guns you can do things with them.”

It’s a fact well worth repeating to people on this forum who often seem to forget how the world actually works. While I know it’s a fact that makes you (and I) uncomfortable, I guarantee you that it’s a fact that neither you nor I will ever escape.

“We should be given free reign to flame him until he leaves, tail between legs”

If Lilburne is willing to give you that license, I’ll support him in it. I respect his judgment. But, contrary to what you seem to think Marko, I do not fear you. Besides, I have 2000 posts here, don’t you think if you guys were going to scare me off, you would’ve done it already?

Jonathon, I think you got the wrong impression of my second point, I never meant to say “you [the average forum poster] are wrong and I’m right”. What I did mean was that we should always try to be civil in debates, and I think that the primary reason is simply that if we’re have a discussion with somebody who is sincere, intelligent and well informed there’s always the possibility of learning something. This needn’t be much, and it may simply be that you learn certain arguments of yours are weaker than you first thought or that you would be more persuasive if you had more empirical evidence to support your case. Ultimately, however, if you go into every discussion under the impression that those who disagree with you are insincere, stupid or ignorant topics will quickly descend into what we all too often see, and what you moderators correctly dislike.

Giles, please don’t try to water down what you said. I can read. You said exactly the following,

Like it or not, you are definitely wrong on a few issues and you’re probably wrong on quite a few issues.

“You are definately wrong on a few issues…” does not translate to “try to be civil in debates”. Do you think I’m supid, Giles?

Krugman is a special case, most economists laugh at Krugman precisely because he is such an ideologue. Nonetheless, if he were here in front of me right now, I might well ask him about international trade, all the more so since I’ve heard Russ Roberts and David Henderson praise his work. But for almost any other prominent intellectual, I’d definitely see the opportunity as a learning experience and use it as such. This doesn’t mean uncritically accepting what they have to say, but it does mean recognising their comparative advantage in economics.

So, thinking that economists are wrong is OK only if other professional economists already think so as well? Of course people should respect differences in experience and educative level, but that doesn’t mean that they should ‘shut up and ask questions’, as you originally suggested. You can disagree with people, you know.

But once again, you’re largely misunderstanding my post.

No, I understood your point perfectly. Your point doesn’t change just because you try to change it after the fact.

Let me give you an extreme example of this not happening, when George Selgin gets challenged about the basic concepts of banking, which I believe he teaches a course on, by people who have never read a textbook or taken a course on the subject, something is wrong. All the more so when they people make themselves look like arrogant dicks in the process.

Giles, the only “arrogant dick” in that thread was you, when you suggested that people should take a basic class in banking and money (as usual, not actually providing anything useful to the thread).

Now, I’ve had people who disagree with me send me private messages doing just this, and I’d hope that they’d testify in favour of me being patient and trying to go over it with them.

Are you saying that you are intellectually superior to us, or in some way better informed? If so, that’s pretty funny.

I think that 12 months ago when I agreed with the orthodoxy of the LvMI, I was horribly wrong and that if I’d been more receptive to other people’s sincere criticisms I’d have come to see this sooner.

Giles, you are going to have to face the fact that not everyone will go through the same conversion process as you. You were an Austrian, and now you found something else. I am an Austrian, but I don’t close myself off to only Austrian influence. I regurarly read from other schools of thought. Yet, I have not been converted away from the Austrian school.

I have a feeling that this is your entire purpose on these forums - to “show us the light”. This is probably where your previous assumption of “you are all wrong” came from. In any case, proving us wrong is going to take more than superflous rants and will actually require you to disprove theory. You should spend more time on the latter, instead of focusing on the former.

What are you trying to imply?

In English, “you” is often used like “one”. I am pretty sure that you are misinterpreting him.

That’s great, your feelings are subjective. I don’t want to be insulting, but I don’t believe you know what you’re talking about. Since in fact - you’ve offered nothing new to this conversation, that I haven’t already heard.

So, you just prefer to believe we banned KoB for some other, arbitrary reason, rather than as a result of his attitude? If that’s the case, I’m not sure we can offer you any new information, because then we’d just be fabricating it. There is nothing more to KoB’s ban than what we’ve already said.

= Red herring. Regardless, all I see is dodging in that thread, a user continuing to post and ignoring another’s responses. So? Maybe the forums need an ignore feature, which is something that was suggested ages ago.

I’m not trying to divert attention. That thread was a major reason why KoB was banned. At some point late last year there was a shift in the way the moderators believed the forums should be run. We were interested in promoting civil discussion. KoB was unwilling to accept this shift, and he quickly lost his moderatorship. He seemed to take that personally. That thread with LS was the culmination of a long history of poor attitude and an argumentative tactic which all too often included insults.

But, if you want to believe that there was something more to his banning then I’m not sure we can persuade you otherwise.

He did? Prove it. All I saw was steadfastness in his convinctions in the face of fallacies. Anyway - there haven’t been other members who’ve belitteled others? There is a whole damn thread dedicated to that atm… what a weak attempt at a justification.

What thread is dedicated to that? It’s not a weak attempt at justification, it is my justification. Here are some examples,

  1. These two posts. Especially, “Don’t be all butthurt because your childish beliefs don’t deserve respect.”
  2. Here. “Oh not this bullshit again.”
  3. Here. “Actually, it’s just an objection to style. In the future, I’d suggest you not lie your ass off in order to cover for your idiotic and impossible-to-actually-justify “economics” stance”

Knights of Bawaa was not banned because of what he thought, or what he believed in, but because of the way he preached his ideas. “Steadfastness in convictions” is great, but it doesn’t justify belittling others by accusing them of being butthurt, or being a hypocrit, or having idiotic economic stances.

Not going to happen. Although I greatly disagree with you regard to foreign policy, and probably other matters, in comparison to some of your zealous, self-righteous detractors, you have been a picture of equanimity and politeness. Of all posters here, you are probably the most unfairly treated, and I’m glad you don’t let people bully you out.

To illustrate an important distinction…

BAAWA expressed himself baldly. So does Bloom. But BAAWA habitually insulted people. Bloom does not, in spite of being frequently insulted himself.

I. Ryan,

In English, “you” is often used like “one”. I am pretty sure that you are misinterpreting him.

He meant ‘you’ as in the general population of the forums.

I think that he meant to use “you” in the most general sense, not just as this community and not excluding himself. But, of course, I might be incorrect.

I think that he meant to use “you” in the most general sense, not just as this community and not excluding himself. But, of course, I might be incorrect.

This could have been the case, but his use of “definately” makes me think otherwise. There’s no reason ‘one’ would be definately wrong. The entire sentence is as follows,

Like it or not, you are definitely wrong on a few issues and you’re probably wrong on quite a few issues.

It seems to me that he is using ‘you’ as Austrians, and Austrians are definately wrong on a few issues. You in the more general sense doesn’t seem to fit in that sentence. I am especially suspicious because of the general attitude Giles has assumes since returning to these forums - he hasn’t come to debate, he’s come to lecture.

But I’m definately wrong on a few issues, when I said that what I meant to convey was nobody has figured it all out. We all have gaps in our knowledge and have limited understanding of certain issues. Look, if I really thought you were all as uninformed as that line of mine seems to imply (when taken out of context) I wouldn’t be here. The fact of the matter is that I feel that I can learn something from my time on these forums, whether that takes the form of you guys persuading me or me reaffirming my convictions, we can’t know a priori. But that learning can only occur when all parties to the discussion are doing their best to facilitate understanding, a prerequisite of this is modesty. Which is exactly my point here, I don’t mean to tell you that you’re all wrong, but that perhaps you know a little less than you think you do.

So, thinking that economists are wrong is OK only if other professional economists already think so as well? Of course people should respect differences in experience and educative level, but that doesn’t mean that they should ‘shut up and ask questions’, as you originally suggested. You can disagree with people, you know.

Like I said to another poster, having an expert’s opinion on “your side” is by no means enough to make your point. But the fact that somebody has dedicated a long period of study to a subject should be reflected in the weight you put on their opinion. It’s the difference between somebody rejecting Austrian economics based on their time on these forums and based on an extensive study of Ludwig von Mises’ works.

I do disagree with plenty of intellectuals whose authority I recognise. Like I mentioned, I disagree plenty with Ludwig von Mises, but if he was in front of me right now I wouldn’t presume to be his intellectual equal, I would recognise myself as the student.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that there are any relationships analogous to this on these forums. But, there are clear differences in understanding across people and across subjects. I’m just asking for a little bit of self awareness on this issue, and humility on part of those who are less knowledgable.

Giles, the only “arrogant dick” in that thread was you, when you suggested that people should take a basic class in banking and money (as usual, not actually providing anything useful to the thread).

The thing is, when somebody arrogantly asserts to an expert on monetary theory that they “see no reason why banks would exist without a state” I really do think they’d benefit from taking a course in money and banking. I don’t see what’s particularly arrogant about that statement. Look, I see a lot of wasted breath on these forums precisely because people don’t know the basics or because they’ve never read the arguments their caricaturing.

Are you saying that you are intellectually superior to us, or in some way better informed? If so, that’s pretty funny.

I’m bemused as to how you inferred this from the quotation in question. I was claiming that as far as I’m aware most of those who have taken the time to send me a private message would testify to my willingness to go over what we couldn’t get sorted in the public forum. I don’t think I’ve claimed to be intellectual superior to anybody here, let alone all of you.

As for better informed? Yes, I’d be quite willing to make that claim, but it’s a really stretch from what I’ve said to that inference.

In any case, proving us wrong is going to take more than superflous rants and will actually require you to disprove theory. You should spend more time on the latter, instead of focusing on the former.

You presume too much, I’m not nearly altruistic enough to give a damn about “showing you guys the light”, I’m here because it’s a great way to procrastinate during exams and because I think I can learn something. I really didn’t want to give the impression that I think I’m more reasonable because I used to hold the same positions as you but I then saw the light. What I’m saying is that I’ve been where you guys are and I’ve found arguments that were sufficiently convincing to make me change my beliefs. Perhaps the same could follow for you guys, perhaps I could once again change my beliefs, but this forum is only going to be a part of that if people make an honest attempt at discussion. All too often topics turn into public shaming events with high-fives going around “the insiders”.

Like I said Jonathon, I’m sorry you’ve taken the impression that you did from my post. Apparently something has provoked both yourself and Lilburne, it’s unfortunate but I hope you can give me the benefit of the doubt and take my post for what it is, suggestions that if followed by forum members, myself included, would lead to a much healthier type of debate.

Better than to just praise bloom’s fabled politeness it would be if you also let some of it rub down on you and try not to insert cheap shot adjectives like you just did.

Are you this pleasant in other social interactions?

Look, if I really thought you were all as uninformed as that line of mine seems to imply (when taken out of context) I wouldn’t be here. The fact of the matter is that I feel that I can learn something from my time on these forums, whether that takes the form of you guys persuading me or me reaffirming my convictions, we can’t know a priori. Which is exactly my point here, I don’t mean to tell you that you’re all wrong, but that perhaps you know a little less than you think you do.

First of all, I don’t think anybody here believed themselves to be intellectually infallible. In fact, those that did have largely left the forum, or have been kicked out (including Juan and Knights of Bawaa, who took their presumed infallibility to a whole other level, dedicated to trolling and bellittling other community members). For the most part, the remaining members are open minded enough not to warrant this lecture from you.

Second of all, and this is a response to the second to last paragraph in the quoted post as well, I’m sorry if I don’t give you the benefit of the doubt. I don’t believe you have come here to learn, or you are very bad at taking your own advice. From what I’ve seen, from the threads I’ve participated in with you, you have come here to argue for the sake of arguing, preferring to post once and then leave the thread when the debate no longer favors you (I have the Callahan thread in mind). For the most part, these arguments have consisted of assumptions which you consistently fail to back.

Your recent behavior has led me to believe that your intentions are the opposite of what you actually claim them to be. Maybe you can prove us wrong with future posts (and I hope you do, since you contributed a lot of useful information prior to your hiatus), but more recent writing has not given us much of a reason to trust you.

I do disagree with plenty of intellectuals whose authority I recognise. Like I mentioned, I disagree plenty with Ludwig von Mises, but if he was in front of me right now I wouldn’t presume to be his intellectual equal, I would recognise myself as the student.

You don’t have to be an intellectual equal in order to debate with someone, or believe that you are right. I recognize your argument up to the point where we’re talking about respect for the opponent, but I believe this should be true whether your opponent is intellectually superior or inferior. But, you are taking it to a whole other level.

The thing is, when somebody arrogantly asserts to an expert on monetary theory that they “see no reason why banks would exist without a state” I really do think they’d benefit from taking a course in money and banking.

You didn’t know if z1235 had taken a course in money and banking. Maybe instead of insulting him by suggesting that he wasn’t educated enough to have that opinion you should have corrected his mistake. This is what I am referring to when I talk about your general attitude in recent posts - you seem more intent on just telling people they’re wrong, instead of showing them why.

As for better informed? Yes, I’d be quite willing to make that claim, but it’s a really stretch from what I’ve said to that inference.

What’s the difference between this and what I said? You think you know more than us. If you really do know more than us you should show it, because as far as your posts have shown so far you are unwilling to back up your assertions.

I generally agree, but you have to realize that in order to ask for honest discussion you’re going to have to be willing to give it yourself.

Are you this pleasant in other social interactions?

Finally (for now at least), use the message feature more often. Too often topics get dragged down with personal baggage or useless bickering.
