As a teacher at a government school I see first hand that they have all the problems of a prison and a place of education.
Prisons have to keep tabs on their prisoners at all times, make sure resources are in place that will keep prisoners from escaping, keep armed guards on the premises, have to regulate behavior to prevent rioting, and deal with many other problems associated with running a prison. Government schools deal with all these problems PLUS all the challenges of running a place that attempts to educate.
I can definetely see why government schools are at a disadvantage because of this.
haha good parallel. But the funny thing is that prisons are meant to “educate” criminals too. Or to be specific, it is meant to re-educate them into good law-abiding citizens. Same ends, different means… oh wait..
That is why I am always amused at attempts to stop drug use, bullying, abuse, etc in the government school system. The government clearly has more control over prisons than schools yet prisons seem to have all of these issues. I am amazed as to why the media and supporters of government schools would expect that government schools would not have these issues. I find it even more impressive that as problems like bullying appear to get worse, they are better by any statistical measure, that people expect the same efforts that fail in prisons to be successful in government schools.
The reason for all of this is simple. There are wealthy and powerful interests that are completely invested in the government school system. These interests are extracting rents from tax payers and do not want to do anything that might threaten the extraction of this loot from the populace.
The conculsion I have drawn is that forcing people to go and stay at government schools is very unproductive. It forces you to keep them there and waste many resources doing so. Plus, since they are there against their will, you’ll have behavior problems to deal with as people who are held somewhere against there will tend to get angry and for good reason.

No private school can force someone to stay on their premises. Only government run institutions have that power.
As a matter of fact, the only thing private schools can do is ask a student to leave if they became out of control. Which is exactly what any business would do.
And private schools don’t have armed police on premises to catch any students trying to escape.
Every schoolteacher, parent or person standing in the place of a parent is justified in using force by way of correction toward a pupil or child, as the case may be, who is under his care, if the force does not exceed what is reasonable under the circumstances.
If a 14, 15, 16, etc year old wants to leave a private school, they cannot keep them there anymore than a business can keep a customer on their premises against their will (if they have done nothing wrong).
There are police at all government schools in the Houston area. Usually 3 or more at the high schools.
And even worse still title I schools force students who’s parents cannot afford to pay for their kid to “eat out” everyday, so that forces the government institution schools to pay for lunches and breakfasts to their students…much like a prison is forced to provide their prisoners with food…since their holding them their against their will.
