Today a sub took over my class and he was a senior teacher.
We were talking about education and he told me that back when he was in his prime, there was less government regulation when it came to coursework, assignments and marking criteria.
That meant teachers used their own discretion when it came to marking rather than rely on rules given by the government department
That has changed quite a lot and now all subjects have rigid marking criterion.
In chemistry, in one of the assignments you lost one mark if there was a slight gap between the lines in your table. Like if at least one lines did not touch perfectly, you were marked down because that is what the rules said.
Now I’m guessing 30 years ago nonsensical rules like that did not exist. Any teacher with common sense would not care whether a few lines did not meet perfectly.
He even told me that the essays he would have awarded a 19/20 before he now has to give 15/20 now.
So what do you make of all the government regulations?
I think the rules and strict criteria dumb everybody down.
The government’s edicts dumb down courses, teachers and students.
The problem with government regulated education has nothing to do with the difficultly of the work or the stricter grading policies. The problem is that the government has a monopoly on what children are taught, how they are taught, and what they should know. If you disagree with the states method of teaching/indoctrination to bad because it’s all that’s available.
The fact that government is involved at all is a crime.
My history class was told, as a fact, that free trade was only good for big corporations. The teacher said it as if he was saying that 1+1=2, or that Canada is north of America. No discussion. Not even a hint that there were other views on the subject. How I managed to find Austrian economics after that brainwashing, God only knows.
I don’t really get the first reply. Our prime minster thinks promising every student a mini laptop is an ‘education revolution’ . Sure enough, no one has got the laptop yet and it looks as though only yr 9’s will get it.
I can send you to school to learn that all black people are inferior. Would you call this an education? I can send you to school to learn that all people with an IQ below 80 should be executed. Would you call this an education? I can send you to school to learn how to be a good slave. Would you call this education? I can send you to school to learn how to be an efficient manager of slave labor. Would you call this education?
Schooling and education are two different things. Schooling is a method. Education is recognizing your mistakes and not repeating them. History shows that mandatory schooling is responsible for ideas such as the following.
Jews are the human version of pest ridden rodents. They do nothing but spread disease, and steal our sustenance. This being the case, we can see jews as no better than rats, and should form a plan to exterminate them, thereby ameliorating the human condition.
I learned it in school, therefore I am now educated? Wrong I have been schooled not educated. The education comes when I talk to a Jew and discover that he is not a disease ridden rat, but rather just another rationally acting human being, with whom I can cooperate and trade.
