As I understand it, the government is selling land as “property” as differenciated from “sovereignty” - a false dichotomy from my point of view but this is how the world is ruled right now.
It would really far, far more interesting if they were allowing the creation of new political entities in those places.
Sure, its still just a land sale, but 3 years from now, when the bailout expires Greece will face again imminent bankruptcy, and it shall either be forced to sell sorveignity, or else it will loose the ability to effectively control these places. So, I think its still interesting news.
What a fascinating idea! I pay a little extra for my house, and it becomes legally mine, my own little country. No one can tax me, tell me what to do, nothing. I run my own country.
Hey, why just Greek Islands? Why not right here in the USA? Sell me the sovereign rights to the ground under me. Of course I would never extradite anyone. I would need to issue myself a passport, and I would grant myself diplomatic immunity from any crimes.
Would sell like hotcakes, first to the very rich who need tax havens, then as the govt got more desperate for money, to anyone when the price got low enough. Maybe developers could include sovereignity as one of the perks of a newly built house. End of housing slump right there.

This was bound to happen eventually. Ron Paul doesn’t think the United States will ever pay off its national debt either - at least not without liquidating some of the market. Do you guys think we’ll ever pay it back simply by lowering spending? If so, do you think we need to slightly raise taxes (making sure there’s a sunset clause in the increase)?
I don’t. Obama promised a trillion dollars a year deficit every year he is President.
Besides, look what happened in Greece. The moment the govt tried to give the tax eaters a penny less, violent riots broke out. You think we are too civilized for that?
So what it there to spend less on? Wars? Obama is looking for new wars like a heroin addict for his next fix.
Of course not. We are already paying way too much as it is. It’s like asking if a patient badly injured in a car crash should donate some blood.
What is probably going to happen is what Krugman thinks is the smartest thing we can do, turn the country into Zimbabwe by printing enough new money to pay all our debts.
Hahaha. I am very surprised I had never heard that metaphor used before. That’s a good one.
In all truth, I’m really scared for our country. A lot of people don’t understand that a $13 trillion debt is something to fear, especially when it’s getting so close to our GDP of $15-16 trillion (I believe that’s correct).
What do you think will be the best way of going about fixing our debt? Just a major cut from departments (i.e. education and energy) and welfare spending?

- Education, which you mentioned, certainly serves no purpose whatsoever. Abraham Lincoln went to school, all in all, for LESS THAN ONE YEAR and wrote the Gettysburg Address. I think there is pretty much universal agreement that every year kids learn less and less, and it costs more and more. The state of California, for example, is broke because of what it is paying to cops and firemen and, you guessed it, teachers.
As we all know, if your life depends on doing something, you will do a better job at it than if it’s just an unpleasant imposition on you. If schools were private, the educators’ lives would literally depend on doing a good job, or else they would be fired and they would starve. But nowadays because govt jobs are unionized and the govt is not paying teachers with the govts money but with my money, teachers cannot be fired no matter what they do. So that actually working is just an imposition on them.

Energy. Also totally useless. It was created in the 70’s to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. After 40 years of effort on the govts part, we are more dependent than ever.

Welfare. This destroys families, because it gives money to single mothers but not to married mommies. Guess what happened the instant welfare was introduced in the 60s? Yes, an incredible increase in the number of single mothers, all on welfare.

And on and on. The trillion dollars a year we spend on the military is useless. Just as a simple example, how come we need to spend more than all the countries on Earth combined, and yet Mexico has conquered 3 counties in Arizona, right up to Pheonix, as we speak?

Bottom line, what common sense tells us, that a thief [=govt] will not serve you as well as an employee, is seen to be true in the real world as well. if only they would at least just steal the money and not do anything, that would solve part of the problem. But yeah, we have to close the whole thing down to really solve it.

I live in Arizona, and I can tell you that it is as bad it Alex Jones makes it sound. People on the left, especially those who don’t live in Arizona, make it sound like all of the illegal immigrants are just coming to have a better life. Since I go to Arizona State University, I live in Tempe, and it’s getting very bad to walk alone outside. It used to be a very nice town, but you cannot let girls walk by themselves. Slowly but surely the Mexican cartels will make their way throughout the entire state while our government does nothing.
I don’t understand why people think that, if we got rid of the Department of Education, there’d somehow be no way of getting schooling. They think it’s been around forever.
