I couldn’t help but think that by the logic of the gov’s response to the financial crisis, that this really is the best thing to happen to Haiti in a long time. Imagine the jobs that will be created (or saved) building new presidential palaces, roads, hosptitals, etc. Its like Cash For Clunkers times a million, a real boon to the economy. Add to that a reduced labor force, lowering the unemployment rate (it’s easier than scrubbing discouraged workers), throw in the increase in foreign aid that will be spent on rebuilding the country, which is sure to raise GDP, and things are really looking up for Haiti.
I hate that I see this disaster in such a cynical light… we really are living in an age where the numbers obscure the reality and politics destroy reason.
