It appears that not shantytowns, but equipment critical to the sovereignty of the state, the national palace, the tax office and the U.N. peacekeepers’ HQ, have been destroyed.
It’s been my belief for a while that destroying the state’s physical organs would be enough to cause its collapse. It will be interesting to watch what unfolds there.
And it’s hard for anyone to claim that Haiti would be any worse off under anarchy.
Breaking news: the prison is also collapsed.
I think anarchy takes a mindset. So I am sure the government will recover just fine.

Yes, the state of some sort or another will be restored. Either by the Haitians or by the US or by the UN; regardless of how well alternative arrangements work out.
The video is a good example of the work non-state actors can play.
Hopefully they have some natural elites in Haiti. People who are obsessed with trans fats and low sodium diets.
I agree. Unless there are people that will take advantage of this lid being blown open. There are seeds of liberty being sown as the system is broken down and people will be getting by with their own hearts and wits without dependence on a gov’t. There will be people that will realize their own liberty actions. But how far that goes, idk. Also it goes to show also the speed that the U.S. will provide aid with the UN and other countries - that speed aspect - is insightful. The statist do need to get in there very quickly to plug up their dam.
There was a factory owner who lead an opposition movement against the president, but unfortunately he was white and so was “undemocratic”, hence all foreign states backed the current “democratic” party in power, as they have when Aristide was first overthrown.
I think the real problem is that he probably did not have a comprehensive meal plan for his constituency. He should take a page out of Bloomberg’s book. All people really want is to be told what to eat.

Haiti has always been a nutcase, I fear this earthquake, apart from the countless killed and injured, will spell new hardships for the poor people living there. I am not talking about lack of food or water but how international bodies will step in to “rebuild” Haiti.
President Clinton sent the US Marines. The reason: “the Witch” convinced her husband that this would have appeased Jesse Jackson and the black Democrats. The Marines landed without a clear goal: they were recalled once everybody realized there was nothing for them to do down there. Imagine what will happen right now that we have President Obama and Secretary Ban Ki Moon in power. Perhaps the US military will seize the opportunity to build a base.

I want to donate money to serious organisations that help haitians, but not socialist/fascist organisations. Which organisations should libertarians donate to?
