I keep getting accusations of holding an “Ideology” in comment sections of youtube videos. as I always understood it ideology is just a set of ideas that make up your world view, and I didn’t think there was anything wrong with this. but so many statists use it as a dirty word in an attempt to shut down the argument I just have to ask, is there another meaning?
It also can be an ideology in the marxists sense -wrong world view due to you being a member of a certain class.
But ideology also has the connotation of a group of beliefs impervious to reasonable objections -like the way “religion” is used in a negative way.
I agree though, a word (ideology) is not enough to rebut claims.
People on YouTube are idiots. There’s no point in having a debate there because it’s not a permanent forum and, most importantly, it’s completely anonymous. People just post shit there (as far as politics goes) out of anger or annoyance and that does not lead to rational conversation. No one’s going to adjust their belief system or become more accepting because they read some insightful YouTube comments.
Statists consider there is a difference between “Ideology” and “truth”. I suppose they are technically right, but I think they are missing the point.
You can learn more about (libertarian) ideology here.
“Ideology” generally has connotations of dogmatism or an uncritical psychological attachment to certain ideas - a closed system of thought. I’m not seeing what the problem is with the term, other than in the context of a handful of post-leftist anarchist types who claim to be anti-ideology while being just as human as anyone else, and some post-modernists that hardly anyone cares about who proclaim that ideology is dead.
“Ideology” is a word that’s been usurped by advocates of End Justifies the Means systems, to use as a pejorative against people who have consistent principles. You are supposed to respond by abandoning your principles, ergo your ideology, whenever they claim to have some short-term goal that can be achieved by doing so, like Saving the Children, or Selling Our Liberty for the Promise of Safety.
