Actually, its alot bigger than boxing now. And I forsee it will surpass even the big sports in the US like basketball and baseball. UFC is truly international. If you watch the press conferences, not only do the fighters come from all over the world and speak different languages, but the journalists ask questions many times in other languages.

Jon Jones, a former college wrestler from Endicott, N.Y., was scheduled to step into the cage Saturday night in Newark to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title. Bob Reilly, a Democratic state assemblyman from Clifton Park, N.Y., is working to make sure Jones never competes in mixed martial arts in their home state. Reilly is the main opponent of the effort to legalize the sport in New York State.
Last year, a bill to legalize mixed martial arts in New York passed the State Senate and was approved in two committees of the Assembly but was not brought up for a general vote. It was also stripped from Gov. David A. Paterson’s budget proposal before it could be considered. Reilly sent a letter signed by 48 members of the 150-seat Assembly to the speaker, Sheldon Silver, asking that sanctioning of M.M.A. not be included in the budget, which led to its exclusion.
Reilly opposes the sport because he says it is too violent and dangerous. He also says the state would not make the kind of money the sport’s proponents have claimed.
“The state would have to pay to regulate it,” he said. “But no matter what the finances are, I don’t approve of it.”

That Reilly bloke is an ignorant plonker. MMA is a fantastic sport that takes enourmous amounts of skill and training.
I think maybe the opinions of people like Reilly stem from an outdated perception of the sport that came about in the early days of UFC. I can’t say I want to see a sumo wrestler fight a kickboxer, or a BJJ guy pummel a deluded aikido “master” because that doesn’t seem like a fair fight to me.
Fortunately, the jokers and chancers have been weeded out by now and we are left with a mature sport that is far more entertaining than anything else I can think of.
