A judge on Monday blocked a federal requirement that would have begun forcing tobacco companies next year to put graphic images including dead and diseased smokers on their cigarette packages.
U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled that it’s likely the cigarette makers will succeed in a lawsuit to block the requirement. He stopped the requirement until the lawsuit is resolved, which could take years.
BLAST! I was totally going to market a line of “Cigarette pack cozies” that one could stick thier pack into to cover the images. Yet another example of the state causing malinvestment!
Seriously though, thank god. I’m not a smoker but I find that type of stuff so patronizing I get angry just thinking about it.
They really don’t think this stuff through. The idea of stores selling dozens upon dozens of little boxes with diseased organs on the front. The government is trying to make it look dystopian and sadistic. Luckily, I’ve moved up to pipe smoking.
What I do, and I know all smokers do this. You know how every cigarette pack has a different surgeon general’s warning on it, how cool. Mine say smoking may cause fetal injury or premature birth…fuck it. (laughs) I found my brand. Just don’t get the ones that say lung cancer ya know, shop around. Hell gimme a carton of them low birth weights. What the fuck do I care? “Why you so down Bill?” Low birth weight. Yeah, I’m smokin’ way too many low birth weights.
