I am 87% left brained according to the test. My guess is that most of us are heavily left brained, or at the most balanced. I would also guess the vast majority of the population is right brained. If this is the case, then we have no chance using reason and logic to try to convince the masses of the truth. And given my experience, I believe this to be the case.
[edit] After a few people have taken this quiz, it seems to be too subjective of a quiz for it to be very valid. I still think most libertarians are more left brained than right brained, meaning logical, whereas the rest of the population is more right brained, meaning intuitive.
52% right, 38% left. That’s about right for me. Especially since I have an eidetic memory, although I’m very absent minded (I get into over thinking about something even when riding my bike in busy traffic…).
Actually, he needs to flip the argument to left brainers make up the majority of the population (which is true under most samples). And as such, people easily rationalize their way out of problems, rather than trying to understand the given problem in all its intricacies. Or in simpler terms: they delude themselves with faulty logic.
This image test is better. I can make it twirl both ways (not easily, either I have to think ‘left’/‘right’ to make the direction change or think ‘words’/‘images’, then the image changes direction). If it twirls clockwise, you’re primarily using your right hemisphere. If it twirls counterclockwise you’re primarily using the left hemisphere. It will eventually twirl clockwise if you look long enough because your right hemisphere is your image processing portion of your brain, thus it’s going to take over (think of it as a GPU in this example).
That’s how I understood it. Right-brained according to the test might mean open-minded. More left-brained might mean highly convicted of something and hard to persuade otherwise.
So actually since Spideynw is highly convicted of his position on liberty that’s a good thing. And the argument could go another way in a very meaningful way. I’m more right-brained ready to release the criminality of government into oblivion, peacefully of course, don’t want to initiate coercion and become the State. And this would mean, I venture, that Spideynw having the order of mind to know what to do when this happens will step right in and answer the call and know what to do! And I’ll not be confused by any change and eruption of vast freedom entering our lives and will be very comfortable.
So basically a statist doesn’t fall on one side or another and neither do anti-statist. It’s how we use our inclination of right or left brained.[:D]
It has been my experience that most people are not rational, but intuitive, which is right brained. If the samples are based on people choosing their own answers, rather than using observation, then I would doubt the validity of “most” samples.
The test I posted is a perfect example. It is about how you view yourself. If you view yourself wrong, then you will choose the wrong answer, and get the wrong result. Most people think spontaneity is desirable, and so may choose that they are spontaneous, when in reality they are not.
That would be called intuition, whish is right brained.
I have read nothing indicating this as a factor of either right or left brained. Also, I consider myself one of the few people willing to change his mind given a logical argument. Most intuitive right brained thinkers I have found will not change their mind, because it just “feels” right (intuitiveness).
You are still young. Giver yourself a few more years and you will get more left brain answers, is my guess, once you get to know yourself better.
I used to think I was Mr. spontaneous, until I started studying personalities. I realized that I have always loved rules. I mean, I LOVE RULES! And to be a libertarian, you have to love rules. And this is a very left brained thing to do. You also have to love rational thought. This is also very left brained.
I guess it was the way I was reading the tests definitions. For me, somebody that is very organized and likes structure is set in their ways so to speak. And somebody that is intuitive is not set in their ways thus not yearning for a routine or set structure in particular. But like I mentioned in my second post, I can see what you’re saying now as being very reasonable. I don’t hold a strong logical pattern or have strong rules on how I perceive or enjoy an event. Yet, I’m very persuaded by good rational arguments, which are not always arguments that are set in stone rules that I can look up at all times. I’m very nimble. I can see both sides. For instance I saw a difference between routine and liking a very structured environment. Routine for me is something I do each day, but the environment in which I like to perform my routines needs to be very flexible. I am perspective oriented at times, meaning, it depends on how one looks at this. I can see helpful insights from either side of the brain or as ladyattis said I understand there is bullshit on either side of the brain too.
No personal judgements. And yes, I do kind of know you. I have seen plenty of your posts. And no, I do not know your answers to the quiz. I could be wrong. That is why I put in there, “is my guess”. So don’t go taking offense.
The problem is, that test sucked. It asked if I like to follow rules. Sure I do. My own moral rules. Not society’s rules. It asks if I am rebellious. Rebellious against what?
I am even more right brained than the results show. And I think I am getting more right brained, and less left brained as time goes on.
Anyway, I didn’t like your inference/assertion/guess that I might not know myself well. We’re all works in progress until we take the dirt nap. Age is irrelevant. I know 60 year olds that don’t know who they are because they never bothered to ask.
