Libertarian Editiorial for HS newspaper

I am relatively new to libertarianism but I wrote this to put in my highschool newspaper. I would love some suggestions, point out anything wrong or that I missed. Criticizm is welcomed, thanks.

Albert Einstein’s quote “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.” is the best explanation for modern day politics. The Democratic party and the Republican party have monopolized our present day government and while the citizens of the United States listen the these two parties go at each other’s throats day in and day out and as we see a new incumbent president from the opposing party of the previous president get sworn after 4 to 8 years of failure, broken promises and distrust, we fail to ever see any real ‘change’.

Both parties are blinded by their hypocritical ideologies; Liberals base their platform on opposing unconstitutional wars, supporting personal freedoms, such as women rights, gay rights, separation of church and state, and claim to oppose unconstitutional bills such as the so-called ‘Patriot Act’. While they make a strong front for personal freedoms, they are anything but for economic freedom for individuals while imposing increasingly progressive taxes and the belief of ‘wealth distribution’ as patriotic. French political philosopher Frederic Bastiat says its best, “The state is the great fiction by which everybody tries to live at the expense of everybody else.”

On the other hand, Conservatives claim to base their platform on economic liberty while failing to be proponents of individual liberty. It has seemed to be more important for the Republicans to move their party towards a religious organization rather than a political one.

Both parties are very hypocritical and do not realize that economic freedom and individual freedom are one in the same.

After President Clinton policed U.S. troops around the world during his tenure, President Bush based his 2000 campaign from a somewhat non-interventionist foreign policy. He actually said “I am not so sure the role of the U.S. should be to go to other nations and tell them to ‘do it this way’”. Well, we saw how well those plans went.

While the Republican Party claims to be a party that supports ‘low taxes, and small government’, a 700 billion dollar bailout was passed with a Republican controlled congress along with a Republican president. How can you be a party of low taxes and small government when you pass a bill that results in the exact opposite?

On the same note; liberals love to point out the loss of liberties Americans have endured under the ‘conservative’ President Bush. But the same democrats that liberals voted into office are the same democrats that gave President Bush the power to do ‘whatever he deemed necessary’ following the 9/11 attacks. Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel even has an outline of a mandatory civil service for Americans between the age of 18 and 25 which is only a step towards a national draft.

There might be a difference in the two parties’ supporters, but is there actually really in big difference in who the supporters vote for?

All the while these two parties continue to fail America by placing a ‘war on drugs, increasing national debt with unnecessary government spending, increasing foreign violence and military presence overseas, and enlarging the size of our bureaucracy, while restricting personal freedom and taking our country further and further away from our founding fathers ideals, the third largest party in the United States is not even mentioned.

Republican and Democrats alike have claimed that our current financial crisis came out of nowhere and could not have been prevented. While Bush republicans come up with excuses for the failure of our economy, liberals find it a perfect time to attack the evil “Free Market” and try to convince the American people that Socialism can save us. The truth is that these current financial woes have nothing to do with the ‘free market’, it is impossible considering the fact that we have not even actually had a free market in decades, probably not since the Federal Reserve arrived in 1913.

Surprisingly enough, republicans and democrats fail to realize that Libertarian Economists (Austrian economics) have been predicting this crisis for years. Despite libertarians spot on prophecies, oddly enough the government continues their bad habits and ignores libertarian economic train of thought.

As far as social issues go, I as a Christian I have my own morals such as believing homosexuality and abortion are wrong, but does that mean my morals should be forced on other Americans?

As a libertarian I do not have to agree with other people’s lifestyles but I do tolerate them; for what takes place in other people’s lives, whether it is homosexuality or the recreational use of smoking marijuana is no more my business than it should be that of the government’s.

Morality should not be in the hands of the government (especially the federal government) as long as it is not violating anyone else’s natural rights or property rights. Libertarianism is not a moral philosophy but it is a political one, filled with tolerance and opposing coercion.

Ludwig Von Mises (founder of Austrian Economics) said, “The great characteristic feature of a free society is that it can function in spite of the fact its members disagree in many judgments of value.”

Until any “Change” or “Progress” can take place in America, what first must take place is a change in our election process; eliminating the monopoly of Democrats and Republicans while giving third parties an opportunity.

I am a libertarian because I believe in freedom…Why aren’t you?

A few points on an other wise good piece:

Really awkward. How about Albert Einstein once said that…

perhaps it would be better to say "instead of operating as a principled political organization, the Republican Party has turned into to an overgrown club for the nation’s evangelicals.

Hmm. I would say libertarian political and Austrian Economic trains of thought. It’s only honesty to put a small degree of seperation between the two.

I think your supposed to use a lowercase ‘v’. Menger was the founder of AE not Mises. Mises is just the one who applied the insights of AE to everything under the sun. Bohm-Bawerk and Menger weren’t into money, credit and the business cycle, as just a few examples.

By it you mean immoral acts, right? Also natural rights or property rights is redundant. Property rights are natural rights. So that is a little unnecessary imho.

You should add that the FED is what caused the crises.

comma after “all the while”!

I think the Greens are now the third largest party by registration now.

Great point to put into a HS newspaper! I think you meant only a step away from a nat’l draft, no?

As ]much as you bring up a good point here, you should be aware that Republicans were in the minority at this point. The bailout passed in late 08. The Dems took congress in the 06 midterm election.

“The belief that ‘wealth redistribution’ is patriotic” woud be a less awkward way to phrase this crtique.

With such a radical piece one should put forth a much more radical conclusion. Before any true “Change” or “Progress” can take place in America, first Americans as individuals must change themselves and understand the moral, economic and political necesities of throwing off the chains of Big Government and Social Democracy. These chains have shackled us into an unstable entitlement system, corporatist bailouts, immoral wars on foreigners, an immoral war on those who partake in drugs and a ferocious business cycle that is now unleashing its havok on the American populace. As these dark days face our nation Americans, that includes everyone of you, must choose what they believe in. In the coming months Americans will either chose to affirm the path we’re on towards fascism or embrace liberty, peace and property under the aegis of freedom. “I am a libertarian because I believe in freedom…why aren’t you?”

^Feel free to use that exactly if you so choose. Extremism in defense of liberty is a virtue.

It would be smart to do control F and replace all “democrats” with “Democrats”, “republicans” with “Republicans”, etc. I don’t know how but perhaps a shout out to Mises.org would be in order, no?

Now that you’ve seen my vast wall of edits I would like to add a few words of encouragement. What you are doing is laudable. Mentioning Austrian Economics and libertarianism in a newspaper read by your intellectually hungry peers can do nothing but good. I wish my own school newspaper would publish my libertarian rants. All in all this is a good piece. Most of my comments were grammatical and stylistic which means that in almost every other respect your piece was good. i was only being so critical because I wanted to help you put the best possible piece out there. No offense at all. Good job.

Wow, thank you so much Nerditarian. You do not know how much I appreciate the suggestions. I did have quite a few mistakes in there, I havnt really edited it or given it to our editor. Thanks again!

This seems like a run on to me. How about this: "As far as social issues go, I am a religous Christian. I have strong moral beliefs opposing homosexual acts* and abortion. However, I don not believe that I have the right to force my religion on you at the point of a bayonnet.

*homosexuality implies opposition to gays qua gays as individuals whereas homosexual acts only implies opposition to gays qua gays as individuals. As a Christian, I assume you hate the sin, not the sinner right? Let’s not give our lefty friends any reason to denounce your entire essay as homophobia! Of course, we both know leftists would never stoop that low, right?

Comma after an introductory clause, man.

I don’t know if this is a fair statement. Libertarianism denounces all theft murder and rape. Esp. that commited by the state. These are not amoral positions. You may want to revise here. Perhaps: Libertarianism is a limited moral philosophy that only denounces aggression against person and property but holds no ethical position on numerous other positions.

Please, please your too kind. Wait until you get the bill! Just know I prefer to be paid in gold than fiat money.

 Just Kidding.

However, it really is no problem.

Small issue: You should probably go with “The Austrian School of Economics”, over simply “Austrian Economics”

hahaha that was priceless.

Will you show us what it looks like after the final’s done? Also, if the thing gets published? Best of luck to you. In fact, I’ll cut you a break. I may be a Yankee from New Yawk and you a south’ner but I feel no need to rip you off. Or burn your city to the ground.

Yes without a doubt. It will get published too, Im actually on the newspaper staff. Were having a spread featuring editorials from a Republican, Democrat, Moderate, then a Libertarian (myself). I bet that 95% of our students do not even know what a libertarian is, I really hope this will spread the word. Thanks again for the suggestions and help, I feel 100 times better about my paper now. Im working on editing everything you suggested right now then I’ll post that version.

Make sure you add “Mises.org” in there some how. Perhaps you could say "For more information, the institute that bears Mises’ name can be reached here: mises.org " either in a footnote of sorts or as a seperate paragraph.

Latest copy…same as always, suggestions, comments and critisms are welcomed.

You will rarely hear that the irresponsibility of the FED was actually the catalyst to our economic troubles that we now face. In context I feel this implies that libertarians have the same view of womens rights or gay rights as liberals do. Not so. Liberals believe in things like affirmative action as part and parcel of womens rights but we would reject that.

comma not a semicolon. intro clause.

I changed my mind. The last positions ought to be rendered issues.

A. Austrian School of Economics

B. Libertarian doesn’t mean Austrian and Austrian doesn’t mean libertarian although the two are highly complimentary

With that in mind I would chage this too the libertarian-dominated Austrian School of Economics.

awkward. Hmmm… the train of thought of libertarians and followers of the Austrian School of Economics.

IMHO you should give Mises.org a shoutout here. With such kernals of wisdom, it is no wonder an entire thinktank is named after this venerable thinker. The Ludwig von Mises Institute (mises.org) promotes both Austrian Economics and Libertarianism.

“The root of” is superfluous here.

Catalyst isn’t the same as cause. Perhaps cause and catalyst would fit better.

I believe ths superior phrasing is:

After President Clinton used U.S troops to police the world,
