I’m interested in reading some books on logic. Should I start with Thinking as a science by Hazlitt or Elementary lessons in logic by Jevons? Also what other good books are there on logic?
I love Hazzlits book. It has a wealth of knowledge in it but it is not a book on logic. Never read the Jevons book. Gordon’s Introduction to Economic Thinking is good and free in pdf form. Nonsense: A handbook of Logic by Gula is good for informal methods.
Oh I just assumed it was since I heard somewhere that Hazlitt reccomended the Jevons books in Thinking as a science. Thanks for the other suggestions!
They are both amazing books.
As Jeremiah said, the Hazlitt one is not on logic. It is more like a guide to how to think clearly, with tips on reading, writing, learning, memory, concentration, constructing / analyzing arguments, etc. Hazlitt is the master of all of these, so he gives good advice.
Jevons’ book is actual logic, explaining terms, propositions, language, sentence forms, proofs, induction, deduction, etc. If you’ve read David Gordon’s Introduction to Economic Reasoning (also highly recommended, by the way), it is basically all the theory of logic behind the first couple of chapters of that book.
