Right now there are a lot of hilarious videos on youtube regarding the Madden NFL games for PS3 and Xbox360. Apparently, Madden has the monopoly on the NFL franchise and will not allow other series to have this license. The 2k series and the Backbreaker series are both pushed out of the market. Backbreaker Football is forced to use generic teams and go without player names, but has a superior physics apparently and otherwise innovative gameplay and presentation.
Many people have been devoted to showing how this has been detrimental to football games. Like canned animations and bad gameplay; most of which has not changed since 1999 (when competition was more prevalent). For instance, the new feature that the Madden team is excited for next year: surprise onside kicks. They worked for months, they say, on this ‘amazing’ new feature. That involves pressing 2 buttons.
Listen to this guy talk about the monopoly:

My theory is that people get economic theory, even in silly situations, when they want to or it is under their radar.
